After much debate and enough phone calls to burn most of my monthly minutes, my wife and I brought our new baby home today. I think my wife and I have decided on "Thor" for the name. It's black, inside and out, with leather trimmed seats and a hard top. We'd have preferred silver outside and black/tan inside...but, when you shop at the end of the model year...anyhow, it's a good looking vehicle just the same.
I christened it after we got home with some light-moderate trail running, primarily sand, a little bit of stream fording and a bit here or there to use the low range and the sway bar disconnect. I hadn't driven a personal off road vehicle for a while...during one small climb I could hear this really loud sound - engine rpm steady, jeep moving...took me a second to realize that was sand hitting Thor's underside. You just don't hear that through a VIC headset and ear plugs
It is a true truck experience, no mistaking what you're driving on the highway; not unpleasant though. What really surprised me was the ride quality on the trail - it took some pretty big hits on ruts and washed out sections and never felt harsh or loose and it didn't bottom out. So, add one more NC jeep owner to the tally...perhaps I might even figure out what you all love so much about soft tops and what not someday.
The only disappointment would be the shift knob detaching itself...so, I guess that's as good a reason as any to start the mod list right there. That and I need a Hi-lift mount so it's not sitting tied down in the back. Oh, and a gas cap/fuel door that locks.
