New Mod: LED footwell lighting, Check it!!!

Whats up guys,

So I've been wanting a soft smooth glow from the footwells in the Jeep for a while now, and finally got around to doing it. I know we have a number or people interested in footwell lighting, and since the mopar kit is a ripoff and looks bleh, I figured I'd post up the results. I used 4 SMD LED boards (available in a variety of colors, but I wanted something subtle, not eye irritant, but functional, so I went with amber (fancy word for ZOMG Orange), and the bonus is, it matches my crush.

Anywho...pics...

Front;

Rear

The LED board...don't mind the three burnt out LEDs...I accidentally grounded the board itself while they were on and they shorted out. I have a replacement board on the way.

Materials are basic. You will need a few hours for this job, but it is very VERY simple.

1)Vampire Electrical taps with male receiver:
Amazon.com: Install Bay 3M T-Tap Connector 16/14 Gauge - 100 Pack (Blue): Car Electronics

2) Male connectors
Amazon.com: American Terminal E-FMB250N-100 16/14-Gauge Economy Nylon Fully-Insulated Male Quick Disconnects: Car Electronics

3)Some wire (power and ground)....I recommend using speaker wire like this...makes the job easier, since you will only need to run a single "wire" rather than 2. Plus the insulating jacket helps with protection.
Amazon.com: Premium 16/2 Awg 100ft CL2 Speaker Wire | Cable - Oxygen Free Copper: Electronics

4) Pliers, wire strippers, and heatshrink...this is a good kit...lots of assorted sizes and colors. Works very well and comes in handy. Makes it MUCH easier to protect and clean up your work.
Amazon.com: NTE Heat Shrink 2:1 Assorted Colors/Sizes 4 160 Pcs.: Electronics

5) LED boards...as many as you want. I used one board per footwell (4 total) but you can go ape and use 2, 3+ per well.

http://www.ddmtuning.com/Products/Panel-LED

I have the HP24 units. You can get them from a variety of sites as well, superbrightleds.com for instance...

Thats it. In the passenger footwell, there is a nest of wires and one of them is yellow with a white stripe. Thats the dome light wire, tap into it with a vampire tap, and wire up to your lights. Easy peasy.

Any questions, will be glad to help!

Yea my phone died during the actual install so I couldn't snap the pics I wanted, but it's fairly self evident and if anyone gets confused, I can walk them through it no problem.

Just thought I'd add that the LED boards do not interfere with the CANBUS nor do they cause any issues, do don't worry about overloading anything.

Looks nice, I will do mine soon when I got time (did another car before).
I might suggest using LED strip which will give more even lighting, optionally can get the waterproof strip if you're worrying getting water. (get SMD 5050 if you want very bright, or SMD 3528 if less bright).

I thought about doing strips, but mounting them wasn't going to be as easy as these area. I guess if you want a perfect even light then I agree, strips are probably the way to go. Mine are hidden, so you see a nice glow throughout without the spotlight effect. It looks "hotter" in the photo because thats where the smooth part is on the floormats.

This is great! Thanks for posting!

Since you wired to the dome light, do they only come on when the door is ajar or you flip the dash dimmer? I have been thinking about doing this, but put them on a switch. Mood lighting/find lost crap at night.

I didn't want them on a switch. I wanted them on ONLY when the doors are open or the dome light is manual turned on. I wouldn't want to drive with these things on. Would probably be annoying. Mostly for passenger ease of entry/exit, like when people get out, they can easily locate their belongings and go. I was thinking about doing what BMWs have, and that is putting a single LED both on the inside door handles and the outside door handles, so when I click unlock, the handles will glow. Similar to this...have the cups glow orange (only when doors are open or unlock is hit on the key...

Looks good!

You could always do it the ghetto way. Buy 2 neon license plate frames and zip tie them to the under side of the seats. Gives off a pretty cool glow that fills the foot wells front and back. Just a thought.

Dont know if I'd want glass tubes inside my Jeep. These are cheap and not any more difficult than neon frames. It's just two wires, power and ground.
