new possible grill design - aftermarket..

I was looking at photos of JK's and after really breaking down the design in my head, I realized I just don't like the grill design. I used comparisons between the different Wranglers, and noticed the parking/blinkers moved out on the JK - a lot. To me, this visually gave the Wrangler a short and fat look. I played with a few ideas today using a photo I found online - this is not a Wrangler I know or own, just worked well for editing.

The technicalities of doing this may be a bit difficult, the blinker housing may be a bit too deep to use as is, but I'm going for looks at the moment.

What does everybody think?

Ha! This is what happens when you have long overnights at work and the mind wanders.

I like your design. But you really do have to much time to play with.

Ditto. Good idea. Send to Chrysler...they are straining for ideas! Hence the change from amber to clear turn signal lenses for 2014! I do think it looks better.

I absolutely love it. Much more authentic Jeep look. I wouldn't mind finding another grill and actually doing that.

I like it, but I'd prefer to see the signals directly in line with the headlights. Less authentic, but more pleasing to my engineer/OCD brain.

I can see a team of engineers clamoring to get to the suggestion box every morning...

"Here's one Harry .. 'move the blinkers in' ... let's go through those 1947 drafting design drawings again and see what we can change this year."

Must be an exciting job working on a legacy Jeep line.

Look at is connect the dots between the headlights, turn signal and fog lights. Makes a strait line.

I saw that, what I am saying is that it is not that big of a difference. Not enough to me anyway. I am all for modding vehicles, hell I have a Z4M roadster with more than a few $ in mods, but they truly make the vehicle stand out from others, this is pretty subtle.

We have been working on a few things here and there, now the big question - would anyone be interested if we produced a replacement grill design based on the blinkers being moved inward?

We are looking into it, very early at this point, but it looks like if we do come up with this it will most likely include very similar parking/blinker lights but it would not reuse the stock ones due to clearance issues in back of the new location. These would be LED based we are thinking, but options are open, we are looking at something that would be cost effective, reliable, and replaceable if needed. The grill would be paintable. We would have an option to have it bedlined as well.

Feeling it out - what do you think? If this happens we will look at all the legal stuff like patents and licenses, right now it's just in early, hobbyist mode.

Also, we may make it open source as well where people can play with different options like grill patterns and cutouts. Any opinions welcome.

The original looks better to me, because the grille is too wide and not 'tucked in' as it was in the CJ series.

Were I you, I'd buy a used grille, then drill holes and mount a clear set of turn signals in your new proposed location just to see who notices. Tell the curious its a 2013.5 model year modification.

It took me a minute to think about it, but I definitely like the look of moving them in. Agree with RICANBANDIT that it is a very subtle change and not worth buying a new grille for. Go crazy and leave them where they are and add some fogs in the new position!

Here is the 'tucked in' grille on a CJ-2A. The JK light relocation brings in the lights and leaves too much body width visually. It makes it look wider than it is, design-wise.

^ That's an interesting grill as well. I'm looking into a few things with the stock grill as well, just diy stuff at the moment. I will post back again after the holidays on that.
