Hello everyone, just joined this awesome site. Well, I literally just bought a brand new Tacoma double cab 4x4 3 weeks ago and honestly....it sucks. Already bringing in to dealer for issues, they have been pretty bad to work with. I've always wanted a JK, should have just bought one sooner but never really stopped and realized....hey, I can afford this. Tons of loyal Taco owners on the site are very disappointed to say least about "redesigned" taco's.
I'm looking at Unlimited auto 3.73 Sport. I'll be taking in for 2.5" rough country to guy who's been doing this long time and then looking at 33's. I'm budgeting this in and doing it right away.
I don't have jk yet. Going to look today after haggling with 5 dealers. Went through true car site. I'm fighting for under 30k new. Any recommendations? I'm getting pretty good trade being as I just got it. Suprisingly I won't be taking bath for that much in stupid tax. Plus I'll save around 2k if I trade. I do really like the Willy, and would love army green color or tan, but hard to come by. I know I can save $$ if I get sport, don't really care about power windows and locks tbh. Don't want leather.
Wanting to know what price I should fight for. I'm also wondering best tires? I've always liked bfg ko2's, but am open to hearing better or other.
Thoughts and comments welcomed. Thank you all in advance!
There's not too many fans of Rough Country lifts on here. Other than that, I guess it depends on what your endgame is. I was able to buy a Sahara out of state cheaper than I could get a Sport S for, so that's what I did. Going to end up taking all the soccer mom crap off it, but still money ahead.
Go to Jeep SUVs & Crossovers | Official Jeep Site | Jeep put in your build and then on the summary page there is a button for "Find new inventory". Enter your zip code and expand the search to 200 miles and it'll display matches to your build available locally. You can scroll through the dealers to see what they have in stock.
Find the ones you like and email them all and ask for quotes. All the websites are pretty much the same - there is a "Request more info" button you press and fill in your name, email and zip.
I don't put my phone number unless it's mandatory otherwise they keep calling you. I was in a dealership finalizing my purchase a couple days ago and overhear the sales guys saying they need to make 75 calls a day!
Honestly I think you can do a Rancho 2" lift for close to the same cost as a Rough Country 2.5" and holy mother of god is it better. Go look in the vendor spotlight area before you buy any after market parts, there are forum member discounts in there that will help.
Thank you all very much! Going in a few to test drive the crap out of one for a good while. I'm already around 29.6, trying to go lower and get tint as well.
Looks to me like you are more concerned with fighting for pennies then getting the jeep you want.
Jeeps are very highly configurable depending on what is on the jeep you are getting. Find the jeep with the options you want and push for 7% below invoice or so.
Go find the jeep you want, don't show that you are in love with it to the dealer and press hard for a good price. Also, every area has there own standards on what a Jeep will sell for. Time of year, time of month, local dealer inventory, all takes a toll on what you can get the jeep for!
To address your question about a price to fight for, I think the "gold" standard set by Koons and matched by some other dealers is 7% below invoice.
On my 2016 JK Willys (Automatic, A/C, Half-Doors, Alpine Speakers) the MSRP was $32,780. They took $3,480 off (~10.5 % off MSRP). I used a coupon from TrueCar for an additional $1,000 off for a sale price of $28,300. The only variables would be your tax and dealer prep.
AutoNation Denver West matched Koons 7% so I flew out and drove it back. Was fun and financially rewarding.
I had a 2015 Tacoma extended cab with full sized bed. Had an annoying air leak/whistle that the dealer just couldn't seem to hear. Not sure of the allure of that truck to many, but I didn't keep it long enough to find out.
If your going to do it right then skip on the rough country lift and look into a rock crawler or metal cloak lift. If it's just a puck lift then the rough country will be fine, if your swapping springs and somebody recommended a rough country then I'd seriously think twice about letting then work on my rig.
Thanky you to everyone who has contributed and gave me ideas and recommendations. I'm pretty excited right now, got my firecracker red jk with freedom top today! About 10% below msrp and really fair on my trade. 3.73, auto, sport, rear diff, even got tint thrown in. I'm in Austin and Jeeps are not easy to get at good prices or at all for base models without special ordering. I owe less on my new jk than on the taco, pretty damn excited! I'm not getting it until Monday because tint, but that's ok.
Already looking at lift and tires, wheels. Hopefully I can get something on Craigslist for old ones. Toyo, BFG, Nitto? Thanks for lift ideas, shows you what I know. Thought rough country was good, guess not.
Thank you! I've never been this excited to drive, feel like a kid again.
Congrats! I also had a New Tacoma that I had to dump after only a year, a cool design but a huge disappointment. Toyota was added to the list of cars I'll never buy again (along with anything GM).
I ran a couple moderate trails at Walker with a buddy that had a new Taco. By the end of the day I had winched him around a tree, he had caved in his passenger door handle, and had one hell of a time getting through the gatekeeper just to go home. No thanks.
Thanks everyone. I'm starting with lift, tires, wheels. Pay it off pretty soon, then add more from there. 2.5" lift with 33's look good? I'm thinking 35's will be a bit much as a dd?
If I'm a light off roader, mainly dd, but still want some comfort with bigger tires and lift what do I need as far as shocks, springs with lift? I'm new to this, any help would be appreciated.
So many options. I spoke with guy at shop I'm looking at getting lift. He told me if I'm mainly a dd and do some light to moderate or a puck lift would be fine with 33's. He said they mainly do rc and revtech lifts. But they can do any if I provide parts. I'm not a DIY. I have 3.73 like I said, and have read lots recently here on 3.73 and 4.10. Too late, already bought my 3.73 because I got great deal. And I don't see the need for 35's or God forbid 37's for me.
I'm looking to get best 2-2.5" lift I can get for lowest cost without jk sounding squeaky as hell like the new crappy tacos. Thanks again. If anyone lives in Austin area and know of good places let me know. I want to do this this week or next.
I have 3:73 on my 2010 JKU and I'm running 35"s with a superchips flashpaqs And mine drives fine. I average about 16 mpg and burn about 2200rpms at 80mph. Its climbed any hill I have thrown at it at not have any trouble doing it. Mines a automatic as well
That's on a 3" suspension lift and 1.25" BL, done the whole lift for under $800 doing it myself.
I was very tempted to get a new Tacoma myself. But I realized I've owned 4 Toyotas (all of which I've liked) but never owned a Jeep. When I drove the Unlimited Rubicon, I knew it was for us and bought it.
OP, I'm sorry you got a Lemon, but even a company like Toyota, known for excellent build quality can make a mistake sometimes. Too bad you're on the receiving end of their unusual screw-up.
As a Toyota fan, I've been super impressed with my JK. I've only owned it for about a week and already love it.
If you go the route of trying to ditch the Tacoma to get the JK, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Just make sure it makes financial sense to pursue that route, because it can be expensive if a major part of the purchase is financed.
Older Toyota's are known for quality, as of late the meaning the last 3 yrs their Quality Control has suffered pretty severely. You can read all over about horror stories from owners. I was about to buy one myself before I got my Jeep. It was between a Tacoma or Wrangler and two things sold me on the Wrangler, freedom to remove doors and top and the fact that a two people I know had serious issues out of the their Tacoma and tundra.
I haven't even lifted jk yet and it's much more fun to drive than Tacoma with 3" lift. Honestly, not sure I got lemon, but Tacoma is just boring to drive compared to jeep, even with top on. I now have brand new jeep and reading here about engine lights already?? Damn, here I go again, can I win? Hopefully just software, nothing mechanical.

Agree regarding Toyota QC going down due to profits being top priority. These new Tacomas are not on same level under hood. All show and no go. Mine had 3" lift and 285/70/17's and drove like crap new.
