New to forum with fuel filling issues

Hey, I just bought a 07 jk that spitts fuel at me every time I fill it up. I did some research and found this in a repair on-line repair reference. I think the fuel fill check vale is stuck open. Read ahead and see if you agree.
The ORVR (On-Board Refueling Vapor Recovery) system is used to remove excess fuel tank vapors. This is done while the vehicle is being refueled.

Fuel flowing into the fuel filler tube (approx. 1 inch I.D.) creates an aspiration effect drawing air into the fuel fill tube. During refueling, the fuel tank is vented to the EVAP canister to capture escaping vapors. With air flowing into the filler tube, there are no fuel vapors escaping to the atmosphere. Once the refueling vapors are captured by the EVAP canister, the vehicle's computer controlled purge system draws vapor out of the canister for the engine to burn. The vapor flow is metered by the purge solenoid so that there is no, or minimal impact on driveability or tailpipe emissions.

As fuel starts to flow through the fuel fill tube, it opens the normally closed check valve and enters the fuel tank. Vapor or air is expelled from the tank through the control valve and on to the vapor canister. Vapor is absorbed in the EVAP canister until vapor flow in the lines stops. This stoppage occurs following fuel shut-off, or by having the fuel level in the tank rise high enough to close the control valve. This control valve contains a float that rises to seal the large diameter vent path to the EVAP canister. At this point in the refueling process, fuel tank pressure increases, the check valve closes (preventing liquid fuel from spiting back at the operator), and fuel then rises up the fuel filler tube to shut off the dispensing nozzle.

Mine does this at every pump. I stop frequently when fueling and when get to where I think the tank is close, I barely squeeze the handle.

There is a tsb on this. But my lazy ass has yet to take it in and see what my wonderful local dealer says about it.

In sunny Orygun here the public can not fuel their own vehicles....we have to have highly trained drones hired by the company pump our gas.

I've found about 50% of them spill and use some kind of squirter to wash it off. The othe 50% don't seem to notice.

I'm going to follow up a bit of research here for my 08.

Thanks for the post.

Thanks jeffk42 for that thread link. Alot of good info there. I just filed my complaint with carsafe.gov. Hopefully we'll see a recall soon.

I work with a guy that said this happens to his JKU. I thought he was nuts because I thought the pump shuts off when once the fuel hit the nozzle. Hmm guess I was wrong.

My 07 had the same problem. I took it to the dealer and they pushed compressed air through the vent for the gas tank and it was clogged with something. After that I haven't had a problem sense.

Ditto

got a 07 JKU and had the same issue with fuel spilling out. After 2 attempts to fix it the dealer put in a new gas tank - no more spills! No charges for anything

had a disappointing phone call to local Jeep dealer....wanted to discuss issue, he wouldn't even talk about whether there was a TSB. I asked numerous questions, his response was 'bring it in and we'll take a look---no way to tell until the technician has it and does the research'.

He refused to discuss the TSB # I gave him.

My search of that number has not produced any data.

My gas tank burp is getting worse.

I got a letter today stating that my warranty is extended for this issue. Along with a form to fill out for it.

warranty extension

hi. i am new here but thought i would chime in... i just got a letter from chrysler today saying that my '07 jeep is in a group of jeeps that have their warranty extended to cover this fuel spilling issue... it says i can be re-imbursed if i have already paid to have this fixed, or i can take it and have it fixed if i currently have the issue, or i can keep this letter until i start having this issue... its not a recall but its a move in a positive direction.....

Jeep just issues an extended warranty on their gas tanks for this. Check their website. They are covering the cost. If you already got it fixed hey are reimbursing people.
