New to the jeep world!! Well maybe

Well I picked up a brand new 2013 wrangler unlimited on Thursday Sept 20th. So far the dealer has had it more than I have. The check engine light was on when I picked it up and they said it was probability the gas cap triggering it that if it didn't reset bring it back in. Well that wasn't the problem. I took it back to them on Monday and had to leave it they said the light wasn't on when they went to work on it and the ran the codes and there was a old code in there for the knock sensor they cleared the code and put 5 miles on it and it didn't come back on. I went after work on Tuesday to pick it up and before i put 1 mile on it the light came back on. I returned back to the dealer and had to leave it there again and they said they had to order a new knock sensor for it. They got that part in on friday and it didn't cure the problem so they had to order a new PCM in and replace that. They got that part in Saturday morning and replaced it put about 15 miles said it was fixed. I picked it up around noon drove 6 miles home then detailed it from where there was crap all over it from where they had worked on it. Then I went to go over to a friends house that lives 2 miles away to show it off and the check engine light came back on. I pulled over and called the dealer because they closed at 4 and it was 3:30 and was told the service writer would call me back. Well I never herd from him. I called them back Monday morning and explained to him what happened and he had me bring it back in after work set me up in a loaner car. I got a call from them yesterday saying they are still working on it that they are not sure what the problem is. Sorry for the long first post but just needed to vent a little. I sure hope its not all like this.

When I got my 09 JK, it was used with ~7000 miles on it. The check engine light came on so I took it to a dealership close to work, which had just recently started selling/servicing Jeeps. I had it there 3 different times and they swapped 3 different parts. The 4th time, I took it to the dealership closest to my house. They found that there was something to do with the PCM that had actually been melted by the exhaust (this is what I'm told at least) that they had to replace. Once they replaced it, I never had the light come back on.

The moral of my story is, just because a dealership thinks they fixed the problem, they may only be fixing the symptoms and the underlying problem hasn't been found -- perhaps due to their incompetence. For me, it just took a better technician to find the real issue. Also, I won't be returning to the first dealership any longer.

Good luck...I hope they find your issue.

first, welcome to the forum. second, sorry to hear about your troubles with the new JKU. no, they're definitely not all like that.... thankfully!

i'm not sure i wouldn't just make them take the damn thing back and get another one off their lot. and it sounds like that service department isn't very customer oriented... very unfortunate.

good luck!

When I asked about the lemon law at the first dealership I took my JK to, they said that the diagnosed probelm was different each time I took it in, so I wouldn't be able to turn it in as a "lemon".

This may not be the case with your issues, but I thought it might be worth mentioning.

Welcome --- bring it to a different dealership. Some are way better than others. Purchasing a code reader isn't a bad idea either. We have one for our sports car -- so whenever anyone has a light on we check it (most places charge a stupid fee). That way YOU know what's wrong so you don't get railroaded.

Good luck. Once it's fixed you'll love it!!!!

Hi!

The same thing is happening with my 2013 Wrangler Unlimited. I picked it up Saturday September 29 and the check engine light came on as I was driving home from the dealer. I brought it back the following Tuesday, and the dealer said it was probably just a glitch and (I assume just reset it). As I was driving home, the check engine light came back on again. I brought it back in the next day, and the service department said it was an errant knock sensor and had to order a replacement part. It should be ready to be picked up tomorrow, Oct.8, and hopefully the problem is addressed. Although after reading your post, I'm a little discouraged! I hope it's not an indicator of problems to come. I've previously owned a cj-7, and a yj both of which had mysterious oil leaks and other chronic problems that I just learned to live with. When I mentioned that to the salesman, he laughed and said, "Oh no, we don't make 'em like that anymore!" Fingers crossed!

OP - IMO talk to the service manager and or general manager at the dealership first and explain your concerns. If they won't help you, look for another dealer. Also research the lemon laws for your state just in case.

Did you also get something in writing every time your Jeep was at the dealer?

Not to be a Smart A**, but What would you have them say? Their gonna protect themselves. Talk to an attorney. Or better yet if you know an attorney, have them call the dealership for you. You may get better results

Ok got mine back Thursday it was a pin connector in the harness for the PCM that was not pushed in all the way and was not making a good connection and setting off the code for the knock sensor. So far so good haven't got to put alot of miles on her yet left friday for Hatfield & McCoy trails in WV but got a couple miles and no light. Service manager told me to look in the accessory catalog and pick something out for being so patient with them and they would see what they could do. Think I'm gonna ask for the remote start.

Frustrated, same prob

I am having the exact same problem. The dealership I am going through has found a loose pin is harness also drove it over 100 miles and as soon as I took it home, light comes back on. Back in a rental. I am told lemon law would net me a loss due to depreciation and be a long process. First chrysler product and very unhappy so far.

My advice to anyone is to buy a code reader. It is much easier to stay on top of the situation if you have an idea what is going on before you bring it in.
My check engine light came on - we read the code prior to dropping it off. That way I know what the general issue is so I don't get the run around.

crossing my fingers

well, Picked it up last night. a little history, the codes have been the same every time. It has been the knock sensor. First time replaced the sensor, next time found that same loose pin in harness, third time it was a faulty sub harness (that's what they called it). So, picked it up last night and have fingers crossed. I got nothing from the dealership but 1/4 tank LESS in gas. Glad to hear our jeep is still not giving that code. Keeps me hopeful. Wyle69, you went to a good dealership. Grats on your remote start too.

Jeep Wrangler Sahara 2013 - Engine Dying - Engine Light Coming On

So I have only had my 2013 Jeep Wrangler Sahara for just under 2 months, about 2,600 miles on it. Hasn't even had it's first oil change yet!!!!!!!!!

And today, after driving it around all day, maybe put 100 miles on it, got home, did a few things in the house, went back out and drove it a mile up the road and the engine starts coughing and bucking like crazy and the engine light is going on and off. As I pull over to turn around to go back home, it shudders and dies. Starts up again but is running really really rough!!!

I make it home, but it died on me again on the way. Engine light came on and went off several more times on the way home.

Had to call the dealer, they had me call the Road Assistance # who said that if I wanted it towed to the dealer I HAD JUST BOUGHT IT FROM!!! which was 20 miles farther away than the one closest to my home, then I would have to pay the additional towing myself. That cost me an additional $42.50. GEEZ!!!!!

But I had them tow it back to the dealer because IT IS A BRAND FREAKING NEW JEEP!!!! I am soooo pissed about this right now.

YOu don't expect a brand new vehicle to be running like a 77 Mustang (which, by the way, had that piece of crap 2300cc engine in it - the same one that was in the Ford Pinto- and which was the most god-awful-vehicle I've ever owned and worked on!).

I don't know yet what the dealer will tell me but they for sure are going to make this right, including my towing bill, or I am going to make sure that everyone in the state of Wisconsin knows that that dealership is to be avoided at all costs.

I'll update this site/thread when I get a resolution or updates.

Hopefully no one else will have this issue but I've already seen a few posts on the 2013 Wrangler on here where others have had engine-light issues.

DANG IT!!! This just ain't right!

Nervous Newbie

Hey guys this is my first time posting! I just ordered my 2013 Jeep Wrangler Sahara last week (not even a confirmation email yet) and needless to say you guys have me worried beyond belief. I've never owned a Jeep before but I've heard that some of the older models were plagued with problems. I didn't expect that with all of the revamping Jeep has done to the newer models. I hope everyone ends up with great running Jeeps!

I have a 2012 bought in November...I love my jeep. I'm sure I may not always look at it as perfect, but it sure puts a smile on my face. It's in for it's first oil change today.

There are always bad seeds with every type of vehicle made. Don't worry, the vast majority are fine. This is a forum where people voice their opinions when things go wrong. No one makes posts to say their Jeep has no problems

I wouldn't be to nervous. Picked ours up May 2012, now 23,000 miles & no major issues. Clock runs slow, haven't had time to take it in. Seems like about any vehicle now days runs to issues. To much electrical crap under them. You can always get a 100,000 mile warranty. But that debate can rock a whole thread of opinions. Enjoy the wrangler, nothing like it.

^Agree.

For the record, 1st time Jeeper and I've had my 2013 JKU Sahara since Oct. 11 with no issues (knock on wood).

If you really think you may have a lemon, I would really suggest that you contact a "lemon law" lawyer ASAP. Most offer a free consultation. Take that opportunity to tell them your situation and get answers to your questions. I think the lemon laws vary by state so find out how you are protected in your state.
