newb off road question

hey guys! so I've been on this forum for about a week now and it is unreal how helpful everyone is and for that I'm extremely thankful!! another newbie question but a friend of mine has a jku and wants me and him to go trail riding even uwharrie sometime. i really want to start doing some off roaring right now but other then a winch and side steps my 2012 sahara JKU is completely stock. can i still go on several trails or do i have to lift it to be able to do anything?

You will be fine on some the easier trails. As for the side steps, if you are talking about the mostly plastic ones, you will either need to careful or take them off. I have heard of and seen some of those get broken and/or bent when off-roading.

THe best accessory for any wheeling adventure is common sense. If you find someplace that sells it PLEASE let us know cuz it seems to have been on back order for quite a while.

Best rule of thumb I've heard:
You can drive up a hill.
You can drive down a hill.
Dont try to drive accross a hill.

Don't forget to bring a recovery strap

Without a lift and bigger tires at Uwharrie you are going to drag your frame on almost all the water break terraces (ask me how I know). It's not bad enough to cause any damage or get stuck, just go slow.

If you have a good winch and good off road tires that is basicly all you need. You may have to remove the side steps as they will sometimes drag. Remember your jeep is already trail rated. Some people will tell you that you need a lift kit and if thats what you want that is fine. I have had a CJ5, a TJ, and now a JKUR MW3 COD and all had or have Warn winches with recovery equipment to go with the winches. The only one that had a lift was the CJ. The TJ and now my JKUR would or will keep up with the CJ anyday.

In Uwharrie, you should be fine on nearly everything stock...except for Daniel. If you're concerned about what your Jeep can handle, then park it at the trailhead and ride with your buddy for a bit so you can see what you're getting yourself into. Then go back, get your Jeep and do the trails you feel comfortable with.
