Newb with 45mph dash squeak

First off, hey all. Just picked up a 12 JK last week, Sahara. Older guy who always wanted a jeep and traded in the two seat MB for this one. Love this vehicle except for one thing, between 40 and 45mph I get a chirping that sounds like it's coming from the dash driver's side. Under 40 quiet and goes away between 45 and 50. 50+ quiet. Been around long enough to know taking it back will be a hassle (we don't hear any noise, can you describe the noise?, etc.), though that's probably what I'll end up doing (only has 600 miles on it).

Ideas? Anyone else have this and fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Searched forum but didn't see another problem like this one.

bump

It goes in Saturday for the dreaded wrinkled face service squeak drive.

Two weeks old today. 1100 miles.

Just got done reading the oil change interval debate thread.

Maybe I can at least get that done while I'm there.

Bump my own thread should anyone have a similar issue later.

Took tech from dealer for a ride Saturday 6/30. As expected, tech doesn't hear anything. Frustrated, I tell him Ill just drop him off then no point in continuing. He offers to drive and hears the squeak and gets completely frustrated, shaking his head and telling me "it's not going to be easy. I'll need someone else to listen and it could be coming from anywhere. It's very slight (as if I should just let it go on a $32k vehicle) and I'll have to test drive it every time I try something" Shaking head etc.

Get back to dealer and service manager make appointment for me to drop jeep off Thursday 7/5. Tech tells manager on way past again that "it's very slight". Manager will give ma a loaner and I said I'd come back at night to pick it up to which he replies, "unless we need a part then it would probably be Friday".

I manage a business for work with many customers (wholesale). If this were my business, I'd be apologetic and reassuring to a customer who has a 3 week old vehicle that squeaks but they seemed annoyed that I would bother them. Is this what I can expect from owning a Jeep?

Love this ride except for the annoying squeak. Thing is, it won't be so slight when I am looking to sell or trade later. Then it will be, you have a squeak problem. ARGGHHHHHH!!!!!

Will post my own reply to this thread again after Thursday. Confidence is not high that this will be fixed. Tech also accelerated aggressively driving which was totally not called for and I am babying this thing through break in.

Post my own reply as I know all you jeepsters have been patiently awaiting the squeak reply thread. Short answer, the squeak is still there. Been to dealer and they had jeep for entire day. Tech was good to work with and he said he tried "lots of things" but vague. When asked more, said he tightened plates, etc.

We did take another vehicle out and heard a similar noise around 45mph. Hard to believe coincidence. They're asking jeep if this is a build issue for some.

Don't believe they really want to work on this though. They did offer to take it for another day but couldn't answer me on what they would do. All he said was he had to keep working on it to find it.

Not a lot of confidence and not loud. It's just one of those things that you know is there. Letting it go for now.

Too bad about that. The reason the tech was short with you is because that complaint just took food off his table. Warranty rarely if ever pays for diagnosis time, only for the repair or replacment of parts. Yea it's his job, but if you knew you were going to work all day for free you would be in a gruff mood too. I always said if techs got paid by the hour our cars would be much better off.

noise

hi, noise could be coming from things in ur glove box or center console
storage, take everything out, could be from a CD on the door side storage
area, it also could come from the rear seat, on my last jeep 07 i had a sound from the number plate, one tire could be out of balance, i.think that
is what you have since you get the sound at around 50mph, the jeep will
never be as quiet as ur MB, my second car is a MB and as good as it is it's no
Jeep. tell the dealer it could be a balance problem i have a 2012 wrangler and it's GREAT..all the best with ur new ride... you may consider taking it to another jeep dealer it's all warranty work.

I just bought a brand new 2012 sport today and at about 50 miles it just starting making a squeak noise too. It starts when cruising around 30mph. Though mine seems to be coming from under the passenger side. I wonder if the dealer opens on sunday...

Thanks Fire. Not much confidence where I bought it. Still chirping at 45. Contemplating another dealer. Gave my dealer an entire day and they are still scratching their heads. Also, interested to see how/if a Massachusetts winter of snow and ice affects it.

Try loosening and re tightening the bolts on the sport bar where it mounts to the windshield frame. It may be over tightened which will make a squeak or if it's loose it will make noise too... May not be it, but it's an easy thing to try. Also make sure it isn't coming from one of the visors....

I also have experienced a similar squeak on occasion - I've been able to "fix" it by undoing and reattaching the driver's side visor. Also make sure the visor is pushed all the way to the left (laterally).

Just bought new Jeep Liberty 2012 and immediately heard very quiet squeak always when driving over 45-50 mph. As expected took back to dealer and after several hours of my time nobody at the dealer heard the squeak and of course were not able to fix it. I had a 1996 explorer that did not make any noises when I traded it in. Over the 16 years when I owned it and heard any noice I took it too my mechanic and he found the problem and fixed it. I will probably need to take more time and pay my mechanic to find the problem. I believe it is coming from either the front or back drivers side wheels. Any ideas what it could be with a brand new jeep?

Dam,

Let s know please. Believe it could be wheel related as rainy days cannot hear it (though it could also just be drowned out).

thx

Chaz98765 it is refreshing to read about some other owners that are experiencing the dash sqeaking. I have a 2012 Wrangler Sport 4d and about 3 months ago I started hearing a squeaking coming from the dash in the area of the instrument cluster. The noise starts around 35-40mph and lasts up until i exceed 55-60mph. I have had the vehicle into the dealer for diagnosis and they came back to me saying it was the aftermarket radio i installed. the noise is no where near the radio. it is located to the center left of the cluster. I have removed the dash and am in the process of road testing it to try to pinpoint it so when i return to the dealer i can give them a better idea where to look. originaly i thought that maybe it was the speedometer or tach. Maybe gears inside or a cable needs lubricating. not sure how the inside inside of the cluster works. There may not even be moving parts in there. I have owned 2 other jeeps and a land rover d90 so I am use to noisey vehicles but this squek is not in my opinion acceptable for any new vehichle. Hearing others commenting on this thread makes me feel that this is an issue that Jeep should take up. After I listen and pinppoint the noise I will update. when I have more info on this.

Have the passenger use a stethoscope and see if you can zero in on the location.

They will look funny, but I've had great success using them. Particularly the ones with a metal probe on the end to listen into engines.

btw-after several dealer visits, i gave up on the squeak, though the tech working with me said after i pointed it out, he hears it on all new wranglers (2012 anyway) to different degrees.
