Newbie Jeep owner tire question

I am embarresed I don't know the answer, but I am sure you guys can tel me. When you talk about a 32" tire, is that the height of the tire. I just bought a 2009 Wrangler Unlimted X with a leveling kit, mopar intake, and 285/70/r17 tires. The tires specs are that they are 32.9 inches tall. I am assuming that it means that I have on 32"s. Is that right?

Thanks for the info and help.

Welcome to the forum. No embarrassment necessary.

Your terminology is correct.

That size tire (285/70/r17) is in theory about 32.7" tall. (Do the calculations yourself here.) If you actually measured how tall it was, however, it probably is a bit shorter than that due to the weight of the Jeep sitting on it.

Regardless though, that would typically be referred to as a 33" tire.

No, it isn't considered 32's. The stock 32's that most talk about is 255/75/17. Even though 285's are not true 33's many call them a 33 tire
