Newbie Question

Loving my new White 2013 JKU! I traded in my 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It's been about two weeks and I have to say I am pretty disappointed in the difference in power between the two. Is it me or is there no "get up and go"? I always see the ECO on my speedometer. Wondering if that is sparing the power at all and if maybe I can turn it off? Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome...

I am wondering what gears you have. I have a 2013 JKU automatic with 3.73s sitting on 35s and it has plenty of power. Now, I have never driven a Jeep GC so I don't know how they compare.

Do you have 3.73's or 3.21's?

ECO tells you that you're driving it in an economic fashion. If you want it to turn off, put your foot on the boards.

I don't know about 3.73 or 3.21. Where would I find out?
As for stepping on the gas to to get rid of ECO, I DO step on the gas! That's when I realize I have no power!

Mine says 3.73, and my Jeep "Izzy" has a lot of 'get up and go'.

My 01' GC had 4.7 V8, 3.73, 5sp auto / 13' JKU is 3.6, 3.73, 5sp auto. There was obviously more torque (get up and go) with the V8, the horsepower on the highway in the JKU has my old GC beat, hands down.

Not sure what motor or gearing you are talking about in your GC. You may be talking 'apples & oranges'. If you are comparing the 3.6 to a 5.7 Hemi you are going to get some facepalms

Without telling us the motor/gearing/tranny in your 09' it's difficult to help you.

You're comparing apples to oranges. Jeep Wranglers aren't meant to be speed demons. Lots of people see the tv commercials and/or shows where people are hauling arse; in other words, they're putting the pedal to the metal and the vehicle goes flying.

In reality, it's anything but that. Slow and steady is the rule of thumb when it comes to wranglers. The engine and speeds that the engineers outfit the wrangler with are a very conscious decision.

On the freeway and around town the slow acceleration might be troublesome but as soon as you go off road and meet with challenging off road terrain, you'll find that lack of fast acceleration will not only work to your off road advantage but it'll also keep you safe from doing something dumb to your vehicle that could result in the lose of life and/or damage to your property or person.

I felt similarly when I bought mine...white...nice choice So ..the two things iv learned: 1. You have to 'break it in' - as you do you'll see it improve. 2. Nothing on the spec sheet says aerodynamic. ...but you love it ..so you'll get used to it. Enjoy!

My Dad's 12' Hemi V8 Ram has 390 hp / 407 lb ft torque... not going to compare the two. The Ram hauls ass and plants you back in the drivers seat. To compare to a little 3.6 wouldn't be fair.

The mini-van engine just doesn't have the ponies to get you up and go. Wranglers show their stuff off road, not on. When you put this baby in 4lo and 1st gear that is where the fun begins for these vehicles. I comparison though, drive a stock pre '12 wrangler. You will be most happy with your get up and go.

As the saying goes, "This will be the most fun you will ever have going 1 MPH". From your pic it looks as though you have a sport, so betting 3.21's. Highway gears. Not a lot of get up and go but you are most likely getting 20plus MPG. Put taller gears in it, your get up and go will increase but MPG will decrease. My stock 2009 rubi with 4.10's got 17 at its best.

Check your build sheet.

3.73's will be more peppy than 3.21's.

I'm sorry, this is the strongest V6 I've ever driven. Anyone who says the Pentastar doesn't have a lot of power for it's displacement hasn't driven a V6 before...

Someone who is used to V8's may be disappointed with the torque... a small V6 just won't create as much torque. This is the 'get up and go' aspect. On the highway my Wrangler smokes my old GC. If there was a V8 option in the Wrangler, I would have ordered it.

The issue with some is they are not used to the drive by wire (throttle response)
Coming from a 01, I could not deal and ordered the sprintbooster.

Ehhh...It's kind of a gutless V6. Now, the 3.5TT Ecoboost in my F150, that's a stout V6. 365HP/420Tq. Torque monster at low rpm's. I'd love to see someone swap an Ecoboost in to a Wrangler.

Well, I never drove one of those. Must be turbo or supercharged to give that much power.

I had a Lincoln MKX with that same V6 (it's essentially the same car as the Edge with a different interior and an uglier grille) prior to the Wrangler. I'm not sure that if I mashed my right foot to the floor in both vehicles there's a huge difference in performance - the Lincoln would probably be a little faster due to improved aerodynamics and lower curb weight, but I'm with st1264 on the Pentastar. I think it's an entirely reasonably powerplant for the JK.

Before I had the Jeep I was in an infiniti m45. It was damn peppy and a lot of fun. When I got the jeep though, I went through a weird transition. Life slowed down... and I liked it. I was no longer in a race to get to my destination.

After the first thousand miles on the engine though it does seem to have "awoken" and it feels peppier. BUT I still find myself easing off the line, lazily shifting into second, putting up to 2300 and lazily shifting into third.

If you can't beat most 'non-sports cars' off the line (or stop light) with your JK with 3.73 gears you are doing something wrong...

Most vehicles don't have this aggressive gearing. I babied my Wrangler when I first got it but when I need to get off the line, I get off the line. I'm not talking about racing, just getting in front of someone from a stop as you want to change a lane. I've never had any problems, at all. Wrangler isn't a sports car and never will be. I'd love more power but I don't need it. It's a square box and wind resistance alone kills it at higher speeds. But the 3.73 gearing gives it a mechanical advantage off the start, compared to most vehicles.

Yeah, on my stock 4 door, the 3.6 with 3.73's and 5 speed auto is peppy enough for me.

It is a 2 ton brick....so I'm not expecting a sports car....but it can get out of its own way with ease.

And yes, the throttle by wire sucks...

I bought my 13 jku with 3.73 gears for the new engine and added horsepower. My 08 jku with 3.73's could barely pull our 2,500lb camper full. Of course we sold the camper a month after I bought the new jeep. I could not beleive how easily the 13 towed my camper when I delivered it to its new owner. A little less mpg's but so much more power.

I checked the window sticker and it is a 3.6 V6 and rear axle ratio is 3.21.
(My GC was a 3.7 V6)
I know it's not a sports car and I'm not looking for speed just a little more power. The dealership had to go pick it up 300 miles away, I hope the driver didn't hammer on it...
It just doesn't seem to go up the mountain I live on with ease, revs high and little power.
It's an automatic but I tried the down shifting and that seemed to be worse and wouldn't let me out of 4th gear until I was home.

I'll admit, my 13' JKUR (3.73, auto, 35" tires) feels a bit gutless on the street. It's okay, just not terribly exciting. I'm considering a regear.

I imagine the choice of power plants figures into Chrysler's estimated warrantee expense formula. A bigger power plant equates to higher failure rates and expenses. That's why they like the Eco light; it effectively lowers warrantee expenses by getting drivers, subliminally, to ease up on the equipment.

I had a 2005 5.7L Hemi GC Limited. It was more fun to drive on the street but nowhere near as fun off road. You gotta choose your battles.

Should have got the 3.73 gears in the JK. Your GC must have had the 3.73 as the 3.7 has way less power than the 3.6 Pentastar.

Output is 210 hp (160 kW) at 5200 rpm with 235 lb·ft (319 N·m) of torque at 4000 rpm.[2] It has a cast iron engine block and aluminum SOHC cylinder heads. It uses SFI fuel injection, has roller followers, and features fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods and an assembled reinforced plastic intake manifold.

Gearing is everything.

I'm shopping a regear to 4.1 or 4.88. With a little luck, it shouldn't be too far from $1200.

That is pretty much the issue. Not the end of the world, but a different axle ratio would have provided a lot more pep.

I had the 3.73 in my GC so I knew I had to have it in my JKU. I found that my 3.6 has awoken after a little mileage and it's quite responsive. I loved the torque in my V8 GC but it's hard to get everything you want.

3.73 is great for 'off the start', towing, going up hills, off road. I hear 4.10 is even better for these things, but I have no experience with it so I can't comment on it. If you need to go on the freeway, the 3.73 and 4.10 will rev higher at high speeds. Everything is a trade off.

What the OP experienced as better 'get up and go' was the gearing and not the hp or tq. I test drove the 3.21 and I didn't dislike it, but prefer the 3.73 as a better use of the engine's power.
