Noisy Alternator

I had my stock alternator fry the other day on my way to the lake with my boat in tow. I had my kids with me and was 50 miles from home and 10 miles from the only parts store who could get me an alternator that day. It took 8 hours to get it, but at least they could.

Being "forced" to buy a new alternator was not in my best interest. I didn't have the foresight to have a better upgrade waiting in the back to be swapped at a moment's notice.

Problem: it's noisy. I can hear it at an idle from inside with the windows up or down. It appears to be working fine otherwise. The noise "goes away" (wind noise overtakes it) once I get some speed up...but I know it's still there, and it irritates me.

Has anybody else had similar issues with aftermarket "stock" alternators? I bought this one from O'Reilly...don't remember the brand off hand. It was a rebuilt unit...hecho en Mexico. It still cost me over 200 clams...so replacing it with an upgrade is pretty far down on my list right now.

If bought from O'reilly it should have at least a year warranty! Drive it over to them and have them give it listen. They will probably replace it.

It has the limited lifetime...as long as I own my truck I get free ones. I just don't want to go through the trouble of replacing something that doesn't "need" replacing. If it's just noisier, then I will learn to live with it. If it's noisy because it's just a bad rebuild then I will replace it before I go camping in the hell-and-gone woods in two weeks.

IMO it shouldn't be noisy, especially being able to hear it inside the jeep, probably bad rebuild and if run long enough it will fail!

Replace it now before you get stranded again. Any reputable auto parts store will understand completely. If it's noisy, there is something wrong.
