Not happy...2012 JKU Sahara Leather Seat Problem

I just noticed today that the driver's seat side, right above the adjustment lever, is cracking/splitting in two places. You can see the cloth beneath the vinyl. It is not leather in this area, but my Jeep only has 15,000 miles on it. WTF? Does this make any sense with only 15K miles? Going to take it to the dealership this week. No way this could be considered normal wear & tear.

Anyone else have this issue?

Derec

The new seats suck IMO...I found a perfect slice about an inch in the back of mine right after ingot home from the dealership...they replaced it but still sucked...my wife has an 11 and her seats feel a lot more thicker and more durable compared to my 13

My dr side wrinkled & cracked in the bottom leather section. Chrysler denied the warranty claim, & dealer is only giving me a deal on the new upholstery.

I have 15000 miles on my rig and my seat bottom is doing the same thing as yours, Chrysler has approved my claim but the bottom cover has been on back order for over 3 months.

How could they deny the warranty claim? These vehicles are practically brand new! It's not our fault that THEY built the seats with inferior materials that don't stand up to normal use.

Yes, I'm also waiting on a new bottom. On the warranty, I tried calling Chrysler customer service, which did no good.

Chrysler was emailed a pic by the dealer, they decided the seat was cut, which is bull & obviously not true. I only had 1300 miles on it when I noticed it, & I maintain/detail my vehicles often.

Would you guys say that getting in & out creates more wear and tear than just seat time? In other words, faster for someone who makes many short trips.

I apply a healthy amount of leather conditioner every few weeks to keep it from drying out and slow it from developing cracks. It seems to be working.

Yea, I'm pretty sure getting in/out contributes to the problem. However, if Jeep would have had to the foresight to put real leather on the side of the seat, this would have never been an issue. In addition normal wear testing should have shown this was a high wear area on the seat. I just don't understand why car manufacturers always cheap out on things to our detriment. Charge me the extra money for extra leather on the side up front so I can advoid these type of headaches...

I would say yes, over time & the more in/out, but my issue has nothing to due w/wear. I have a faulty piece of leather, & the irritating part is Chrysler's denial of warranty on something so obvious on a practically brand new jk.

It' pretty obvious that your seat is creasing in two directions, and at the cross point it is wearing. Even with this issue, it should not be causing a hole in a leather seat. I would fight their denial of your warranty.

WE paid $1000 extra for leather seats that are inferior, defective, and do not hold up to normal wear and tear. I will NEVER buy leather again no matter how much the wife likes them. Cloth seats would not have this issue.

Or a concealed carry firearm as that looks like it could be the right area if you carry.

Is the base part there leather? I'm asking because usually that's leather and the outside of the bolsters are vinyl because of that issue, sitting and turning to get out. It's what I've noticed on other vehicles. You can see it in the pics how its creased from getting out.

I am having a similiar problem with my 2012 Wrangler Sahara. The leather on driver's seat is seperating (3/4 inch) after only 23 months of ownership and 15,000 easy miles. I am taking it in to a dealer this week to determine what Jeep is going to do about the defective leather.

They will never admit defective leather. The best you can do is get the dealer to replace the cover...good for another 15,000 miles.

The cloth aren't much better, I took mine in already for record keeping of wear showing before 6k. The TJ seats were much better fabric than these. Mine is also showing wear around the seat adjustment handles and map pocket wear from the back seat folding up on it. The steering wheel leather started creasing as well - but I fixed that by accident when I put Lubriderm on my hands on day at work and it rubbed onto the wheel when I drove patrol - it worked better than leather treatments I have. I treated the wheel directly three times and the creases settled out and the wheel looks new again. The leather issue could very well be a tanning issue with the chemicals they used, obviously this isn't veg tan and brain tan, but it should be a lot better then this cheap stuff.

Leather is a natural material and there is no way to accurately predict how it will wear. It almost sounds as if the hides are not being graded properly for barbed wire damage [cows do get stuck by it and the skin may not heal or heal correctly before they are killed], damage during tanning, or processing.

Unless you are buying a true luxury auto, you are not going to get a 100% leather seat. Most vehicles below ~80k are leather match or leather seated area only.

I just got a 13 JKUR and I'm worried about the height adjustment lever too. I don't use it and wondering if I can take it off? If so, is that easy to do?

I think people take it off and re-attach it lower down to stop it from rubbing.

I missed this, but no I don't keep anything in my back pocket. The new replacement upholstery is holding up good so far.
