Not Turning over right away!!!

OK, so this happened about 4 months ago and when I took it to the jeep dealer and the problem couldn't be replicated, they told me they couldn't find any problem...
So I go out this morning, turn the key & just clicking.... everything goes on so I know its not the battery. I try again & nothing... I shut off the radio/nav, step on the gas once & Viola!!! It starts right up... WTF????
So I drive to the gym & when I'm done, get in and same thing happens....
Anybody have any idea?
Last time this happened & the dealer couldn't figure out any problem, they assured me the alternator was fine & no battery problems... and again, this hasn't happened for quite a while....

Check to make sure there isn't a loose wire on the battery or the starter.

It could still be a bad battery. It may have enough power to run the radio etc. Just not enough to crank the starter. This is very likely if you still have the original battery in the Jeep.

Daggo is correct, look for a bad ground , broken post on the batt,, i remember there was a post about this a while back,,, i've been searching for it, but cant find it.

Several possibilities.

If you hear a loud click (starter solenoid is engaging) but the starter motor is not turning, it can be bad starter solenoid, bad starter motor, or a loose cable between the starter and the battery. Have you been driving through deep water / mud? If so, dirt might have gotten into the starter and worn the brushes.

If you hear only a faint click (a relay) and the dashboard lights don't dim, then it's a bad relay, or a loose cable (from ignition to the starter solenoid).

If you hear a click, and the dashboard lights dim noticeably, than it's a weak battery.

This is ridiculous!!!! So after reading other posts about this same issue seems to be the battery, ground, starter connection, selinoid, relay switch, or neutral safety switch.... So everybody's saying something different & the dealers don't have a solution... great........

Do you have a manual or automatic transmission? Mine is automatic, and I get the exact same thing occasionally. When it happens, I press the shift button and jiggle the shifter a little, then retry, and it always works after that. From reading posts here or on other forums, it seems that this is rather common with the automatic transmissions, and there might be a malfunctioning sensor in the shifter.

Hmmmm, next time I'm going to try stepping on the gas once, and see if that works for me too.

you may want to try and start it in neutral.

If your JK has automatic transmission, I'm 99% sure your issue is with a switch on the gear selector. When it happens again, and it will, jiggle your gear shift a bit and make sure it is completely forward in the Park position then try to start again. I bet it starts right up. I know this because mine has been doing this for a while now. I've just been too lazy to get it fixed. I know, it will probably strand me in the middle of nowhere sometime if I don't get it fixed soon.

Not sure If the turning the radio off or giving it gas had anything to do with it finally starting, but it was something different from just turning the key again and getting nothing...
I will try the shifter stuff next time. thanks guys...
You would think with all these similar problems, the dealers would have a clue!!!

I read that somewhere too, and that's what I used to do, but then figured out that just pressing the button and jiggling the shifter was enough.

Might want to rethink the dealers not having a clue. I chase intermittent concerns from customers daily and from a tech perspective we enjoy it about as much as the owner. Kinda tough to fix something that is working as it should at the time. As you mentioned it went four months between occurrences so even if the dealer tried something on speculation it might have taken four months to realize the problem was still there.

Manufacturers don't like to pay for warranty concerns unless something has failed and been repaired...So chasing intermittent concerns are often done for little to no pay.

As was mentioned it could be any number of things causing your concern.

I'm not sure on an automatic Jeep if the key can be removed from the ignition if the sensor does not see the vehicle shifter has fully engaged park. If so the shifter may be your problem.

A loose ground would probably see the problem happen more frequently.

I'm kinda thinking relay to starter....but hard to diagnose over the Internet.

Well it happened to me again tonight and I tried just stepping on the gas pedal but that didn't work.
