Think the PUG will make it into 2017 model year Wrangler?

(Updated November 25, 2015) The “PSU” — PentaStar Upgrade — is used on the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango. We are still expecting revised heads and direct injection; we have gotten better cam phasing and other changes. We are also still expecting a turbocharged engine, but not until 2017-2019, to fill the gap between 3.6 and the Hemi (or to give Hemi power in a smaller space).

Sounds like a move in the right direction, although I'm amazed you'd redesign a major engine like this that's used across the line, for deployment in 2017 and beyond, and not utilize direct injection. I've had it on other cars since MY2009.

The Wrangler was going to get it for 2016, but with the engine release getting later and later, FCA changed plans. The 2016 Wrangler MY start got delayed all the way out to November 2015, but then FCA lost its patients, and with that, the MY start pulled back in to September 2015. The engine introduction stayed for the 2016 Grand Cherokee and its MY remained delayed for November (or now December?).

Will FCA try again for the 2017 Wrangler? Who knows. Would FCA want to "ring out" the new engine on an established design, or add it in with all the other changes coming with the next generation Wrangler.
