I have this problem with my '07 Unlimited. Can't wait for the first click - it's too late - and a gas bath is on the way! Only thing I do is listen very carefully and shut if off when I think it's full. Most of the time my guess is correct.

I have an 09 JK Sahara and when I first bought it I never had a problem but in the last six months it overflows every time I put gas in it.

08 Jk

Hi everyone mine just started doing this the last few times so Im wondering if it has something to do with the cold temps. ? Ive only owned it since last
May but dont recall it ever happening in the summer months in Michigan.
Might just be coincidence but I drove it through all the Blue Ridge Pkwy , Smokies and back up 75 & didnt happen once, yet on a couple trips "Up North " this Winter its happened every time.
No its not after the first click it just pours out before it even clicks once !

* filled tank
* lots of gas, all over the place...nozzle finally stopped

so - get rid of the boot covers, or, push and hold the nozzle in place... super simple and doesn't need to recall vehicles.....
Not every state requires that stupid boot. Kentucky doesn't, and I have this problem also. Boot or not, it doesn't matter. The problem has been proven to be with the tank. Also, if it WAS the pump in any way causing this, why does the problem not appear with my other two vehicles? Why would every other car at the pumps have no issues, just the Wranglers?

Next theory?

I have just learned that CA required these boots to be installed to catch vapor???? I guess I can see that side of the story, but, instead of vapor they are now getting raw fuel spillage (yep, that includes the vapor). I also discovered (i do not know how true this is, so, it is hearsay) that the designer of the product is a stock holder with Shell ... this seems almost too much of a coincidence, so i am guessing that this is NOT true...
I'm in Ontario, CANADA! I had this issue with my 2007 JKU. The pump would shut off yet a lot of fuel would spill out & no, I did not try to top off. Also, at one point it wouldn't even shut off! Intially the dealer tried to replace a few smaller parts to remedy the issue. Eventually, the dealer replaced the tank & I don't have the problem anymore.

no next theory.. Can you have the dealer explain "exactly" what was changed? I have checked all the records for gas tanks on Jeeps (OEM parts only). There is only one version and one version only. I guess one other theory would be that maybe they dropped the tank, re-bent the entry pipe or something along that. If they can explain what they did to change, that might cure everyone's problem, of which of course Jeep should buck up and pay for it..

just stating what I know about fluid dynamics, and, how I went about proving my theory here, of course I may have jumped to a conclusion, but, the results made me think that I was correct (and also knowing that there is no other tank for these).. I have only created this to myself by running the test. I have a 2010, owned an 07, 01, 98 and a real old 75', I have never had this problem happen to me once... maybe I am lucky

to help all others on this topic. have the dealer tell you the part number that they replaced your tank with. This gives the ones with problems ammo (and takes the guess work out of the dealer)

Unless they change the design, the problem could certainly come back. Mine is an '05, so I'd get stuck paying for a new tank. I just either don't fill the tank all the way or go VERY slow when I think it's getting close to full. This works most of the time. I've also had the problem go away for a while, and then come back.

Lifetime coverage

Got a letter today from Chrysler that says they will fix the tank! So watch you mail! I like my shiny black paint so I am glad Chryslers gonna fix it

I have a 2007 JK and it does this EVERY time I fill up. I have to look at my gauge and guess how much space there's left in the tank when filling up so I can cut off the nozzle manually and avoid a spill.

Bringing back old stuff but I had a similair issue in my 09...wouldn't fill up, acted like always full and the times it didn't it overflowed all over my boots....been doin it for about 8 months, finally got her to the dealer and they are puttin in a new tank :thumbsup

The Day I bought my 2010 my salesman filled the tank before I took delivery and it did it to him. The next time I filled it up it did it to me. After these two episodes it hasn't happened again.

I have the exact same problem but it is on my 2007 Dodge Nitro. It didn't start doing that to me until recently when I hit around 32,000 miles. Now it does it every time so I have to guess how many gallons will get me close to being full and stop. If it clicks then I'm getting gas everywhere.

At first I thought it was me or the gas stations problem.
After trying several different gas stations and having it happen every time I knew there was something wrong. I had never heard anything about this problem until I started searching the internet. I will be filing my complaint soon and contacting chrysler. Hopefully they will fix it as it could potentially be a fire hazard.

My 08 burped back up on each fill....out of my hands since in Oregon we have to rely on the professionals in the gas station to do that. Whether they stood there (almost never) or came back running when it cut off automatically, there would be a little splash/burp of fuel down the side and sometimes onto the ground.

As explained to me, there's some kind of 'inline overflow filter' that is affected by the wonder fuel Ethanol.

In any case, Jeep replaced my tank no charge.

No problem in the couple months since then.

Could be a BIG deal for the company depending on a lot of unknowns.

I was pleased how Jeep stepped up and gave 'extended warranty' on my used rig.

i traded in my 07 in jan and a week later got a recall letter pertaining to this issue. 2 years of pissing gas all over the side of my jeep and after I trade it in, i get a recall letter. Never had it happen on my '11

My 07 sahara did it too.. Took it to the Dealer and they replaced the gas tank. Have never had a problem since. One trick i did do before it was replaced , was to fill it up and stop about 2 gallons shy of full. Then slowly fill the final 2 gallons at turtle speed and it wouldnt spit back..Hope that helps :-)

It happened to me once with 2011 Rubicon but only with one station's particular nozzle. They deducted the estimated cost of the spilled fuel with profuse apologies. Since then no other spills from other stations so I charged it to a defective nozzle. Hopefully. I use 100 octane fuel, the only fuel without ethanol, should I mix it up with e10 occasionally?

I'm several months after the dealer fixed mine.

And their replacement works perfectly.

I was suspicious about actual repair, so I went underneath with a flash light. There I found evidence of all the tank skid plate having been removed. And the symptom disappeared.

No cost to me.
