Oil Change indicator

Hello guys,

I changed my oil Yesterday oil filter and everything. Yet my dash is still displaying a change oil message. I did everything properly would any one know why the computer still thinks I need an oil change?

Maybe I need to unplug the battery?

Thanks for your assistance.

Most new cars and trucks use some combination of ignition key and gas pedal to reset the oil change indicator. Check the manual. I like our Saturn best, there's a reset button under the hood!

Is the oil change easy on the Jeep. Just got my new 2008 Wrangler and have not done one yet. It appears that the filter is easy to get at.

I did a search for this one. Anybody have any idea how many miles it takes for this reminder to come on? Also, I'd like to check to see how many miles since the oil change but I don't guess thats possible without using one of the odometers?

I found the Wrangler to be the easiest oil change i've ever done.

the oil change indicator is based on miles driven and type of driving. It's been 4000 miles since my last one and still no indicator light. From what I was taught in training it is set for every 6000 miles but is also dependent on your driving habits.

Also, it will come on 500 miles before it thinks it should be changed...

Yeah it is extremely easy. My wrangler is the second car I have ever owned and I performed my first oil change on it about 2 months ago. Like you said the oil filter is in a very easy spot to remove. And the stock clearance of the Jeep helps out too (I basically just laid under it while changing the oil).

I believe that a Wrangler is a great car to start mechanically working on and I wish to start learning more about cars because of it.

My 2010 comes on every 3,500 miles like clockwork. Annoying.

Changed mine monday, took me about 10 minutes total. You can reach the filter from above the hood. Super easy. The only thing I found that was a pain is if you don't have a funnel, hitting the crankcase is a bit** because of where it is positioned. DEFINITELY buy a funnel.

I have a 2012 with 5400 miles. I've changed the oil, but never reset the indicator and still don't have the change oil message, haven't ever gotten one.

On my '12, the oil change indicator doesn't look at or know the condition of the oil.

My last change was at 6900 miles with Mobil 1, and my light come on at 7500 miles. After 600 miles, the oil is clean and full, I did not reset the interval/pedal at the oil change.

Separately I stopped by the dealer yesterday to get my daughter's JKU fuel tank replaced (burping at fiillup). While talking with the service writer and parts guy I asked for two 3.6 fuel filters. The writer told me that the OEM Mopar filters were better than aftermarket as they were the correct length and the aftermarket would throw an CEL. Having bought and used aftermarket NAPA filters I paid for them, and took them home. Using a micrometer, they measure the same size and look identical to the OEM filters. While at the counter a customer bought 5 qts of PS fluid for a Cummins Ram and I asked the writer and parts guy whether it was AT4 or regular PS fluid - all I got a blank stare.

I knew I was overpaying for the filters, it was more of a test to see whether the local dealer had any value to offer. He does not. Hopefully the idiots can replace the fuel tank and i will be on my way.

The change oil message will come on based on some predetermined algorithm. The dealer can set the maximum miles trip point. Mine was originally set to max of 3,000 and would light up 500 miles before that as stated above. I had the dealer change the max interval to 6000 miles so that I would have oil changes in sync with the warranty max interval. It has tripped every 5500 miles since it was new and gets changed at every 6000 miles. It is coming up on 60,000 within the next few weeks. I'm told that if there is a lot of hours of engine run time between oil changes, the change oil message will come on before the max set point. That hasn't happened to me once yet. The newer jeeps are now 8,000 miles max interval so it would make sense that the trip point may be set by the dealer to either 4000 or 8000 depending on how money hungry they are. So it wouldn't surprise me to see it trip at 3500 or 7500 which is 500 miles early again as stated above. Wheel it a lot and it may trip early.

i know this is an old thread but i wanted to chime in. My light came on after just changing the oil less than 1300 miles. since the last change i have been on a long road trip and 3 days of some hard wheeling. i only use amsoil full synthetic. so i was like wow, why is this on already. i looked in the owners manual and it states it has nothing to do with mileage but with the condition of the oil. not sure how it knows the condition. also, i did reset the oil change light after i changed the oil last. so i changed it anyway. i am going to send the oil off to blackstone to see what kind of shape its actually in.

Read it again. It doesn't check the condition of the oil. It is based on duty cycle.
