hey guys
I bought a used 2013 wrangler sport and I know NOTHING about cars...
it's so sad
me knowing nothing about cars means that I can't do my own oil change..
How much do you guys pay for an oil change?
I understand that there are few choices.. i've been hearing something about "synthetic" oil change which costs more.
Synthetic oil is oil manufactured in a plant from chemicals VS "dino" or natural oil which is distilled from petroleum. In the lab, synthetic is better because it is produced from the start to the exact specs and properties it needs to be/have rather than achieving these properties by blending different oils as must be done with dino. Blending is always a compromise to a small extent. Synthetic is also more expensive.
You will get varying opinions on this, but in practice, unless you don't like to change your oil when you should (every 5k miles or so) then IMHO, synthetic is not worth the extra expense. It does stand up better to abuse, but its abuse that you should not be subjecting your oil to in the 1st place. Also, remember, that while synthetic does resist breakdown more than "dino" oil, it still gets just as dirty just as fast and this dirt, rather than true oil breakdown is what causes most wear.
All that said... if you don't care about spending a few extra bucks.. go with synthetic. Other than cost, there is NO argument in favor of dino oil.
An oil change which includes the oil filter and should include a check and top-off of all other fluids around here runs about $20 on sale to $50 on the high-side with synthetic. Dealer charges $39.99.

Now would be the best time to learn how to do an oil change since the car is already raised and you can easily get under it. A jeep was my first oil change. There are plenty of videos you can watch online.
Takes about 30 minutes your first time and with synthetic, about $30-35. I prefer synthetic because that's what I've always used and get closer to 10k miles before changing out the oil. It also will help you with cold starts in the winter and could possibly get you a very small amount of mpg boost.
That TeraFlex video helps a lot - definitely recommend doing it yourself, especially if you plan to go to synthetic just to keep from having to pay another person to do it! Also, never hurts to learn about your rig. Best of luck!
Welcome and glad to see you looking for insight - we were all there once!
But - for the love of all that his sacred - please don't ask which oil to buy... one more of those threads and we may open a portal to another dimension..
You're a jeep owner now, Man!
Time to learn how to change your own oil. So easy a caveman could do it
I've never paid for an oil change mostly because I don't trust the guys at the quick lube places and try to avoid the dealership like the plague.
