Oil change questions

Forgive the stupid questions please, but I'm a complete newbie at this - I've never changed the oil on a vehicle before, but I figure that it's never too late to learn these things.

- When should I change it? Opinions seem to vary - I'm currently just short of 8000km (5000 miles) on the clock.

- What is the correct oil to use?

- How does this affect warranty / service record? Do I need to notify my dealer that I have done it myself so that they know that the schedule is being adhered to?

- Is there an idiot's guide to doing it somewhere? I'm sure I've seen a thread on here showing how to do it, but I've tried searching and can't find it.

Thanks in advance.

Depends on what type of oil you use. I use synthetic in mine and I change it every 5000 miles. If you use dino oil you may want to change it more frequently.

5w30 is the correct weight. What type and brand you use is up to you.

I just write down the date and mileage in my owners manual when I do any service to my Jeep. I think this is all that is needed. You can keep receipts if you wish.

Basically all you have to do is remove the drain bolt from the oil pan (black pan on the bottom of the engine) and let the oil drain out into a pan. Then replace the bolt. Next remove the oil filter and replace with a new one. Then fill the Jeep back up with 6 quarts of oil and you're done. I'm basing my knowledge on a 2012 Jeep. Not sure if capacities are different for a different year.

2011 and under jks are 5w-20.

I change my oil every 5k. I use castrol synthetic.. Only reason why is because my friend John has an old chevy that has 330k+ miles on his original engine.
You know what FJ stands for right? Failed Jeep.

As to how to change it, there are video's on the Internet that will take you through the oil and filter change step by step. I recommend that you view one until you are comfortable in doing it yourself. Congratulations on wanting to do it yourself! You will find that it is very easy to do.
If I recommend any oil or type then we will be STARING A OIL WAR, so I will phrase it this way, look in your manual and follow whatever the factory recommends. If you don't have a manual, then with only 5000 miles on your Wrangler, then I am going to guess that you have a 2012, or 2013. Per Chrysler recommendations 2012, 5W30 conventional oil meeting their MS6395 requirement and it must be API GL-5. The same applies for 2013 with one change use 5W20 weight oil instead of 5W30 used in the 2012.
As for the change intervals, well that may start another war, but I would say change it at 5000 mile increments and you should be safe.
Get in the habit of checking your oil level weekly.
Good Luck!!!!!!

Awesome, thanks. It's a 2013; I've honestly given up reading the manual because it never seems to explain anything properly, and the information given on here tends to be more extensive, easier to understand and probably more accurate.
