OK- 2012 Rubi Unlimited? Opinions please

Hey everyone- my husband and I went to look at the 2012 Rubi's yesterday. I actually prefer the 2-door, but hubby wants the Unlimited. Once I saw the tiny size of the 2-door storage area (rear seats in place), I am slowly coming to the realization that we may have to go with the Unlimited. Looking at an automatic, in the Dark Red, Silver, or White. (Some of the colors that look cool in the 2-door, look awful in the Unlimited.) (By the way, the leather-trimmed seats look REALLY great.)

Q about the 3.73 rear differential that comes with the Auto- (I guess you can't get the 4.10 with the Auto in the Unlimited)- how does that affect the offroad capability? We live in Colorado and anticipate going on some the the forest roads (gravel or dirt, rutted), but not for hardcore boulder climbing, so was wondering what affect (if any) the 3.73 will have for that. We are definately set on the Rubicon and not the Sahara.

We have read that the stock headlights are awful- what replacements are recommended?

We are planning on getting the ACE rock sliders added- (I am "vertically challenged"--i.e., short).

Any other things we should be considering.

This will be our first Jeep and we are REALLY looking forward to it.

Thanks everyone!

Kathy, just picked up a Unlimited Rubicon from Colorado Jeep in Aurora last Monday. I am in the same boat in terms of use. My thoughts on the 3.73 is the mileage should be better and I won't miss the trade off on rock crawling. I use the auto shifter a lot to slow down sometimes. I am looking at the ACE sliders as well and a headlight mod. I don;t have much advice based on use but have been very happy so far. Very useful in the snow last week.

Wow. Lol usually it's the other way around.
I have a 2 door and compared to my Tj -- there's more room, especially with the seat
out. I don't have tots so don't need the extra room.
4.10's belong in a rubi especially the 4 door IMO

Get the 4.10 gears. It's a $50 option (IIRC) on the auto Rubi, but would cost +/– $1500 as an aftermarket item. If you ever decide to get bigger tires and a lift you'll be glad for them

ACE rock rails, well, rock. Although, if you're getting them more to ease climbing into the Jeep – rather than as protection for hard wheeling – there are a lot of step options out there.

The headlights DO suck. The guy you want to talk to about replacements is named Hilldweller. I would PM him for suggestions. He's pretty much the Dalai Lama of lights.

A lot of folks on the forum go with Rallylights (Hella) as replacements. Here's a link to a recent headlight thread:

Good luck!

A gear recommendation hinges on what tires you are going to use. If you are staying with the stock size the 3.73s are fine. If you are thinking of ever increasing the tire size go with the 4.10s.

I have the ACE sliders, 4.10 and an auto 2012 Rubi. I'm still using my stock 32's but I'm not concerned if I decide to go bigger if I need to, so far, she's been unstoppable.

Works great and wouldn't change it. Hilldweller is the guru. I just swapped my stock bulbs and went with his suggestions.

Couldn't be happier!

^^^ this!

With the 2012 auto tranny:
3.73 is perfect with stock 32" or 33" tires.
4.10 is perfect for larger - up to 35" tires.

Thanks everyone- think we've decided on the Rubi Unlimited- will get the 3.73 if they have it but the 4.10 would be fine too. Found a dealer that has three in inventory with our color/options combo (including springing for the leather), and accepts USAA pricing. Going to pull the trigger tomorrow, after work (if I can concentrate).

Thanks again- will be upgrading the headlights and getting the ACE rock sliders shortly.
