Lightbulb Okay, you stalled in water...

Okay, you stalled in water... but the good news is, you were crossing in 1st gear like you are supposed to -- and def' know better than to use your clutch (yes, you are driving a manual, haha).

I thought the manual said that users with manuals and with their jeep in 4L -- if stalled -- can start their victor with no clutch while it is in 1st.

I was surprised to NOT find that quoted in the manual.
But then I thought, if I didn't read it there, where the heck did I read it

Q: Is it in the manual, but I just can't find it -- and if not, is this true?

Just curious since I am working up to extend my breather hoses and wanted to brush up on water crossings (in case I accidentally cross a running wash in the desert ).

Yes, you can start without clutch in 4L.

Think it is too......I saw it some where in black and white. Or maybe it was color.

Yes, start in 4L without pressing the clutch. This is one of the reasons 4L is not good for daily commuting. It is too easy to have the car lurch forward because you forgot to press the clutch.

Many years ago I took an off road driving course at the Chelsea (Chrysler) Proving Grounds. The preferred method for starting and stopping on the trail was to turn the ignition off (stop) turn the ignition on(start). The instructor did not want anyone to use the clutch or brakes while on the off road course. This is the area where Chrysler used to test tanks & other military vehicles. When I took the course, the "Roc-Trac" transfer case was still under development, & had not been released for production. One of the Jeeps we drove had the 4.0:1 transfer case, the rest had the standard transfer case.

Yes, the vehicle moves forward. In fact, if you've stalled while crossing a river, you can often creep your way to dry land just by using the starter motor, even if the Jeep doesn't start.

Just don't over do it and burn up your starter.

Unless the reason you stalled was from slurping water into the intake.

This feature also is nice if you ever lose a slave cylinder on your commute home. You can coast into stop lights/stop signs in nuetral then shut the engine off and shift into 4 lo & 1st or 2nd gear and use the starter motor to get rolling then shift into 2 hi and match rpms to shift through the rest of the gears. It wasn't the ideal way to make it home but it was better than paying for a tow.

There's also a fuse labeled something like "transmission override" in the box. With that pulled, you can start it in 2hi without pressing the clutch.

Hmmm.....if there was enough of a resistance to movement that it stalled the engine in 4L I find it pretty difficult to believe the starter is going to have the juevos to spin the engine over while moving the Jeep at the same time.
