One mod I'm not worried about doing on the Jeep...

... that I've done on every other vehicle I own:

Hardwiring the Valentine One (radar detector).

That's one thing about the Jeep that I love. I'm barely ever over the speed limit, and if I am, it's not by much!

Do any of you keep a detector in your Jeep?
It seems like a waste on these vehicles, and so much of the time we have no tops or doors which makes it vulnerable to theft.

Every other car/vehicle forum on the net has many threads about detectors, and how to mount and wire them. Not this one! haha

Sold my 9500ix when I dumped the BMW for a wrangler. It saved my ass at least 100 times.

I quit using radar detectors a long time ago. I just don't speed anymore. I am very rarely in a hurry and when I am late, I really don't care anyway. No need for radar detectors for me.

However, if I did have one... I would definitely hard wire it in.

I recieved many tickets in my '89 YJ, including one for 85 on I-95. I have a heavy foot, don't think you can't speed in one.

I have a Passport in my car, but haven't put it in my Jeep when I drive it.

Someone posted in another thread a great line... If I recall, it was something like, 'when I drive my sportscar, it feels like I'm going 50 when I'm going 90. When I'm in the Jeep, I feel like I'm going 90 when I'm going 50.' :-)

Since I don't drive fast in my JKU, I haven't put it in there. Plus, the theft concern. Even if I take it down each time I get out, the suction cups will still advertise that I have something of value.

I have the Valentine One. It is without the best radar detector on the planet. That being said...unless I am doing 70 in my neighborhood the jeep really doesn't get over the speed limit that much. I bought it when I had my BMW X5 4.8is which spent most of its time well above the speed limit. Now the V1 has been designated for use in the family hauler on long vacation trips. The one I have is about 8 years old running the latest software and it saves my rear end every time we travel. I would not do a long road trip without it.

Before the Jeep I had a awful lead foot. Just used cruise religiously on the highway. That's not a issue anymore with the Jeep.

Hahaha! That's so true! I used to get up to 80 or 90 in the S4 without even realizing it, thus the V1. In the Wrangler I'm lucky to do 10 over the speedlimit. More often than not I catch myself going too slow. How embarrassing!

No tix in mine but I did hit 100 in 4th gear just to see where it would shut down at. Still had about 1000rpm & 2 gears to go. They can move if you want them to...

I don't think it's the lack of power in the motor as much as it is gearing and major wind resistance...

My '13JKU is commonly driven at 80mph on the highway, and it is just fine. Heck, I have taken it over 80 with the top off. It's a bit windy, but it works!

I don't think it is a matter of the engine.
It is a combination of gas at $4.20 a gallon here, along with trying to move a +5000 pound brick down the road.

We have a V1 in every vehicle, although we rarely intentionally speed in the Wrangler. I can take pics later, but we have a pretty nice hidden setup so we don't have to worry about it with the doors/top off.

I would love to see pics of the V1 install. I'm getting rid of my sports car on Monday and my JKU will be the only car. I speed far less in the Jeep but can easily be 10mph over the limit in a 35 zone!

Like the OP I've self installed the V1 in all my previous cars but read that it can be tricky in the JK due to the windshield angle.

.....I'd guess there's a huge as-of-yet unaddressed market for a heart pacemaker-like unit that speeds up the geezer patrons of the JK patrol....sort of an auto-biometric cruise control setting. In my rural area, it's getting way too easy to adopt a default speed of "45-50" regardless.....

last time I got a ticket was 1980....yep, using my little Radar Detector at the time too.....even forget what model it was.

Leaving earlier is easier these days for me than going faster. I spent about 40 years preoccupied with going faster than I was given traffic/conditions, and always frustrated.

Now I'm preoccupied with enjoying other aspects of the trip, and never frustrated.

I have an Escort IQ that I move from my JK to my Mustang. I just keep a windshield mount in each vehicle.

I have a hard wired radar detector in my BMW E39 and have started to think about putting one in my Jeep. But as others have stated I really don't speed much in the Jeep.

Somewhere I have a battery powered detector that I may use.

I always find that I'm perfectly happy doing the speed limit, and taking rural routes that are slightly out of the way in my jeep. Something about rowing through the 6 gears, and especially with the top down is soothing and just keeps me calm and chiving on.

When I need to get to Albuquerque in a hurry it's because my gas pumps are down and I need to pick up a part. When my pumps are down, I'm not making money. I have a detector in my Jeep and I will run over 90 to and back from Alb to make the part pickup. The Escort has saved my butt many times.

When I travel, I use cruise to keep me legal, or close to legal, but sometimes I miss a speed change or creep above the limit, so I appreciate having it in my Jeep all the time. With the national average of a speeding ticket being $175, a radar detector is a nice bit of insurance.

Don't use a speed detector as I go on base too many times and they're illegal on many military installations. Even though they can be "put away," it'd be too much trouble.

Just so you all know, 13 jk with manual, 3.73 and 35's will hit 100+ and not hit limiter. I just got on a drag calc, and with a 6750 rpm limiter you can go over 100 and never touch 4th. I was just curious.

I have never owned a radar detector. But I do have a cousin for a judge and know all tbe cops in my area.

I've had a fair share of German cars that are quite capable. The last few were an M5, 911 Turbo, and an S4.
One thing that got me to put away the V1 even prior to the Jeep was my daughter asking me what it's for...
I realized I couldn't give her a reasonable explanation. The truth was somewhat ugly for a youngster... "Daddy is trying to break the law without being caught" is essentially what it boils down to... even the "well, it's 'just in case' I accidentally go faster than I should..." or "accidentally break the law..."
How do you resolve that with the typical discipline of a child?

"But daddy, I accidentally didn't do what you said to do."

Essentially, at its basic roots, a radar detector is not possible to explain to children without setting a bad example. I actually ditched mine prior to buying a Jeep.
I confess, my last couple of high horsepower vehicles have been without a radar detector for that reason.

I just found it funny that this forum doesn't even begin to approach this subject. Almost all other forums for combustion engines do! I love Jeeps!

I never had one .. I always see these younger kids 17-21 age speedinf around in town ..and i always say to myself...you may be able to go fast but i can go anywhere
