Opened the door too wide.... yet again

This is my second jeep and you would have thought I learned on the first one to be careful taking the doors off, but nope. I had my jeep on an incline when I was removing the door and it opened too wide putting a nice dent on the side front part of the hood. Has anyone else done this and have they been able to get the dent out and repair it?

I saw a thread on one of the forums just yesterday. They referred to it as the "idiot dimple".. A number of people used "Paintless dent repair", less than a $100 fix. Or covered it up with armor.

I kind of like the look of that "armor" anyways!

I have one :/ well had two. Painless fixed one but said other was too close to panel edge so he wouldn't touch it...

So sounds like my options are either

paintless dent repair - should roughly cost $75-$80, need to get estimates and see if it's possible
buy "armor" to cover it up. Looks like rugged ridge makes a cowl armor for about $45 amazon prime. My fear with the armor is it attaches with "double side tape. That just doesn't sound as durable as I'd like it but I figure armor might be a better route since who knows i could get the pdr and just accidently do this again which would really suck.

Of course the dent is drivers side so i get to look at it everytime i drive, ugh.

Had many vent shades double stucked to my trucks. They held up very well over time.

How long did it last before requiring replacement of the adhesive? Will the rugged ridge product fade from the sun?

The dealership put one on my jeep when they did a door seal. I took it back and the paintless dent guy came out and fixed it. Sucks when you take care of your rig and someone else messes it up.

I agree with ya on the double sided sticky tape for armor, but for the cowl I think it would be fine, that area is not generally substitutable to damage other than the occasional rock or mirror ding . If it should take a harder hit then you will have to worry about more *L* But for the rear quarter panels I do not think the stick on armor would be enough but.. Seems if the armor did not give any, the metal that it attaches to would. Even with the bolt on armor.

Had only one come lose. I think it was due to poor prep on my part. Others, lasted 3-5 years then I sold the trucks.

that sucks OP, I know how it feels to have a tiny ding on your prized possession even if it's not that bad. my last car was victim to many people's doors in parking lots. never thought I'd be a victim of myself though!

Worse part about it is it is completely preventable and instead of having my jeep parked up the incline preventing this from possibly happening I had it park on facing down on the decline. I've done this before to my previous jeep so knew about it just forgot. Needless to say it was hard not to scream F*** when it occurred.

run 33X12.5 tires on 15X10 rims with 4.25 backspacing...

this past weekend, I let the door go on my passenger side and thought to myself "yep, well at least both sides match now", only to find that the door hit the tire before it got all the way to the cowl

a little off topic but reading this reminded me of it. the limiting strap for my drivers door was not hooked up and my door hinge isnt working good, so lately my door has decided to be adventurous and fly open when i turn right (usually in the middle of intersections of course!). Well the last time it happened my door flew far enough that, sincethe back of my driver tire was stickin out since i was turning right, the door actually got stuck on the tire. luckily this was just in a buddies driveway and not at a higherspeed or in an intersection. No damage but i did get the limiter fixed that night.

can you imagine the call to the insurance company? "no sir, I wasn't hit by a jeep, just by a jeep door... it fell out of the sky and landed on my hood..."

Yeah! i'm pretty sure if i was going faster it would got lodged in there pretty good and i would messed up the door a bit.. or a lot. Imagine seeing that happen from another vehicle though! that would be pretty funny.

Was just quoted $119 to $139 by one PDR.

I'll keep the dent.

I had the same thing when my jeep was 3 months old. It sucked.

put a small crease and big dent. I took a 1"x1" deck rail and cut it on about a 45 angle. slid it in till it hit the dent. took a mallet and tap it out. Looks good except the small crease could not get it out.

Good enought.
