Hey Guys,

Sold my TJ a month ago. Miss it already.

I've been heckling all the North Carolina dealers around me for a week or so now. Was finally able to talk somebody down on a build to order of a JK Rubicon 2-door to 31400 OTD. Think I should push harder?

What is the invoice price.

Well most on here are paying 1 to 2 below FWP(invoice) thus use that a a basis to see if your getting a good deal... add in correct tax and title fees etc..

Thanks! That was helpful, What I am currently trying to work though, is what the dealer calls an "admin fee". No one around here will explain what that means. So far it's gone between 550 - 1000 dollars. Sounds like BS to me.
The NC Admin Fee is allowed per NC law. It helps the stealership cover the cost of printing paperwork and filing TTL with the county. All of which should be covered under their cost of doing business. You will find a myriad of different prices across many dealerships. However, they will not reduce or delete it. The amount of the fee is determined by the individual dealership.

Where are you shopping around at in NC?

One of the members here bought his jeep at the dealership in Cary on 64. He seemed to be very happy with them and the deal he got. You might try them, if it's not too far from you.

I never bought from them, but I did take our Dodges in to be serviced there and they were easy to deal with.

Just because a salesman tries to make money, doesn't make him a scumbag. He makes his living off of the profit. Do you negotiate your milk and bread at the grocery store? How about your light bill or water? Salesmen at dealerships work stupid hours and have to deal with all kinds of morons. They deserve to get paid. Is 31,400 out the door a good deal? If it feels like one then it is. OTD means doc, tax, title, all the junk. Sounds like a great deal to me. Of course I am a Finance guy, I don't over do it when it comes to purchases. If I want it, like who I am dealing with, and feel like its an OK deal, then I do it. Sometimes you can overwork a nice guy and make him not want to do a deal for you.

Everybody wants the Doc Fee ( Admin, D&H, or what ever you local Dealer calls it) to go away. The problem is that if you charge one customer and not another, then you are "discriminating" and can get sued.

It also amazes me that customers will come into the dealership and treat everyone they deal with like something they scraped off the bottom of their shoe and then turn around and think that they deserve to be treated like a King. Remember, treat people the way you want to be treated and you will get the same in return.

That's right Drew! You can't charge it to one person and not the other.

Its funny here that someone will squeeze every penny on the sales price then get "laid to waste" in the finance office. The finance guy and salesman are friends. If your a jerk, you WILL pay more. Be cool. Either they can do the deal, or not. Forcing them,to save a little more on the front of the deal, can cost you thousands on the back. That advice is free.

Yep. They pay if they're jerks. If they're cool, I'll work with them all I can. My feelings are terribly hurt that you have an opinion of my ethics as a Manager. I've been in the car business longer than some here have been alive. Just trying to give you guys some insight into how things work in the 20+ years that I've been doing this. Making profit isn't ripping people off. You should definitely make your hard to deal with customers pay more, and if they ever ask you why, tell them. Honesty is best. I have no problem making people aware why they are paying more.

I would certainly hope that you're feeling aren't hurt, you're in sales and should have some pretty thick skin, but seeing as you mentioned it - I obviously hit a nerve and am sorry.

Just because you've been in the business for 20+ years doesn't mean you know better (or are more successful) than someone who has been a manager for 3 years. I don't buy into the whole experience = knowledge = success, but maybe that's because I've had some success early on in my career.

I somehow don't believe that you tell people to their face that you charge them more than someone else because you don't like them - or because you didn't get along with them. If you do, that's not a very good business decision.

Again, I'll say that retail sales is way different than enterprise/outside sales. You're going for the "one and done" and churning customers as quickly as possible at any expense, I'm doing the exact opposite.

If you think that a professional salesman in the car business is not looking for not only return business, but referral business, then you're wrong. We love return and referral business.

Being picky and demanding, does not make you a pain in the ass. But I have had people who have called me names from the get go. I have had people call me a liar because I told them that in order to get specific equipment on a vehicle, you had to get the whole package. I have had people who think that the louder they scream the more they get. I've had people walk on to the lot and tell me that they like wasting a salesman's time because we "deserve" it. Who else do you treat that way? Don't forget, Customers can be fired. We don't have to deal with you and you don't have to deal with us.

I will be the first to admit that the industry in the past has not done the best with its reputation. But that is changing. It is changing due to the dearth of information on the internet (both good and bad) and it is changing because the Auto Makers and Dealers are requiring it. If you buy a car you will get a survey either by email or phone from the manufacturer. If you "flame" the salesman or the dealer it will cost us money. If the dealer, salesman, or deal was that bad, why did you buy the vehicle?

If you treat a Salesman, Sales Manager, etc. like a price of crap, don't expect them to work hard to get you the best deal. I have watched Finance Managers go to extraordinary lengths to get deals approved for people that were deserving. If you're an ass, you are not deserving of the best deal. If that makes me a scumbag than so be it, I'm a scumbag. I can live with that. But remember, your still an ass.

Maybe that was a bit too much "Tough Love", and if so I apologize. But sometimes I think that as a society we forget the Golden Rule and feel that we deserve everything we want.
