P0520 Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit Malfunction

Is this a common issue in the wrangler? or in the Pentastar 3.6?

Very common according to my Chrysler mechanic buddy. The pump has a high/low pressure mode driven by a solenoid and a fault in any stage of its operation will trigger a check engine light.

Oil pump/solenoid repairs is probably second only to '12 heads in repairs he has performed on Jeeps.

Here's an update to this topic: got the P0520 code yesterday, took it to the dealer today. They had to order the part (which is on backorder)... they said there are almost 5,000 other orders for that same part visible to them in the ordering system. And they told me it would be at least 2 weeks for them to get the part... so yeah, it's still an ongoing problem...

Yep, it is still a ongoing problem. My code was also PO520. The oil pressure switch, that is causing the problem, is on national back order. Part # 5149062-AA.

And no you don't want to change it yourself, because it looks like you have to pull the intake manifold, to get to it..........

^^^That switch is item number 20. The intake manifold has to be pulled, to get to it!!!!!!

I went in, one week ago yesterday. They had to order it, but it only took four (4) days to get it.
They replaced it Tuesday of this week, and yes my light is now out, and the code is cleared.

If you are going to wait on it, then plan on staying there for a while!

Supplier Issue?

I am wondering if Chrysler Corp is having supplier quality control issues. On the 2.4L engine, the oil pressure switch is known to go out and cause intermittent oil pressure warning lights. Well, I replaced the one on my son's PT Cruiser not three months ago, and it is already starting to leak and set the warning chime - but only when the brakes are initially applied (just like last time). I purchased the OPS from a dealer, so it definitely is an OEm Mopar part.

Don't think so... I've been checking my oil pressure and it's staying between 35-80 psi depending on the rpm. I think it defaults to the high pressure mode to prevent engine damage.. but I wouldn't let it go very long.

Well, I got a CEL light today. Only code displayed was P0520. 16,700 miles. When the CEL came on I started checking the vehicle information in EVIC. My oil pressure was in the high 90s for a while and even topped out at 99. On a second drive it dropped back into the 80s. I am not pleased about this. I will try to get it to a dealer on Monday. Call me a nut but I am a bit OCD when it comes to oil and oil pressure. Has anyone had better luck getting the part recently?

I checked at my dealer and they had it in stock. But the CEL cleared itself and the switch is working again within normal ranges and temps. My oil pressure went up as high as 99psi as well when the code was there.

Everything is fine now.. if it reappears I'll take it in.

I think I will press to get it fixed while I am in town. I travel quite often and some times I drive my Jeep so I do not want to get in the middle of nowhere and have this come on again. I will let you know what I find out Monday.

I guess I have PT-CEL-Stress disorder. My Suburban was a great big bus but it cost me a lot every time that stupid CEL came on. This is the first time I have had a CEL in a Jeep for over ten years....

Fixed. It was about a four hour deal from start to finish. I did not take my Jeep to the closest dealer as they have been a pain. Instead I took my Jeep to Salt Lake Valley Jeep Salt Lake Valley Dealership | Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram . They did a great job and even found another issue to get fixed under warranty. I have used this dealer before with my 2010 Rubi and I can tell you that, for service, this is the best Jeep dealer in Utah for sure.

I would take it to the dealer, there is a TSB on this issue.
I've attached it below;

The CEL cleared itself again.. is that normal to clear? One would think if it throws a code it would stay on.

I think I'll run my scan tool. I couldn't get a code to display this time.

just had the P0520 code on our 2014 JKUR 8k miles. Called the dealer yesterday to ask if they had the part and if my vin was covered under the above mentioned TSB. They said yes and to drop it off today and they would replace it.

SO i dropped it off this morning at 7:30 and they just called me at 3 and said that jeep wants them to just reflash the PCM and that they reflashed it and drove it 20 miles and the light is still off. I sent him the TSB and explicitly showed him where it calls for replacing the sensor. Now he is checking with his Boss to see if they can replace it...

Anyone else had this problem with the dealer?

Translation....

Service Manager/Techs found a "shortcut" to turn off you JKs CEL. Service Manager then submits your VIN for full reimbursement for the (4) hour job to replace your oil sensor. Service Manager's profit margin jumps way up and dealership owner gives him a nice fat bonus check.

My 13 JK (only 12k miles on it) just tossed the P0520 and will be going back to the dealership Fri AM. I will accept nothing less than a new sensor installed and my old one back.

Update, they called me back and said that my vin isnt covered by the TSB.... even though the TSB says 2013-2014 jks with the 3.6.....

But they said since I was concerned that they would replace it....but its too late today now, so they will have to do it tomorrow. WTF...I dropped this thing off at 7:30 this morning!

If jeep wasnt covering the part for my vin I find it very hard to believe they are replacing it out of the kindness of their heart. is there a way to see if my vin is covered by the TSB?

^^^Unfortunately, this Oil Pressure sender has been used for many years.

This oil pressure sensor needs to be updated!!!!!!!

Anyway, the intake manifold has to be removed from your engine to replace it. It's about a 4 hour repair.

That really sucks, when it's on a new 2015!!!!!!!!!!

OD... got my Jeep back with the new sensor installed. Not sure this new one is any better than the old one.. damn thing shows erratic readings on my EVIC.

CEL went off ... Oil pressure sensor

Another one for the stats. 2014 JKUR with 7,250 miles. Built on April 2014 and I bought it on July 2014.

Last week I took it to dealership for its second oil change and ordered synthetic this time. The CEL went off this morning. I wanted to know first what the code was before taking it to the dealership but I couldn't get it using the key on-off-on procedure, well I did but missed it and never showed up again. At the dealership they said "scanner said it's the oil pressure sensor, sometimes they get stuck in the high reading. It's a 4 hours job and I don't have an available spot until Wednesday next week. Do you want to schedule an appointment? I have cleared the code for you and you can drive the Jeep with no problem"

I hope that will do

At least happened while in town. I have a trip to Telluride in a month.

Engine light in 7,000 miles car ... you gotta love Jeep :)

I scanned with my Innova Pro OBD2 reader and the code shows as "yellow" condition on my reader. The oil pressure will show high when cold and then show normal after warmed up.

You should be okay..

I just don't like seeing my oil pressure at 99psi above 2,000 RPM when the engine is cold.

Finally got the courage to drop mine off today to get the Oil Pressure Switch changed... They offered to pay for a rental.. no questions asked. This is the dealer where I buy all my parts. I've used them on and off for service work over the past 25 years - they've had excellent service reviews since they got bought a few years ago.

I know they think I'm one of those customers.. Lol.

Here's my instructions:

- Warranty service. P0520 code. Oil Pressure Sensor. TSB 18-034-14 REV A.

- Investigate rattle in cargo area.

- No mirror recall. Fuse pulled.

- No flashes.

- No engine oil or antifreeze fluid top offs.

- No wash.
