PA Inspection

Tomorrow will be the first time even getting the jeep inspected and I am a little worried. In PA there is a law that prohibits tires sticking out past the fenders. Mine stick out a little bit but nothing really bad.

I spoke with a guy who use to have a truck with my same issue and he suggested taking it to some garage that does a lot of work for an off road shop. So thats who I have my appt. with tomorrow.

If there is an issue I really dont feel like buying a set of smaller tires just to pass inspection - so are there any other options like buying extensions for the fenders. Currently I have the BW flat fenders.

Thanks

We have the same law here in NH and I had to install wide fenders on my TJ to get it to pass. I would ask them ahead of time before you even start the inspection. Here in NH if they test and it fails it goes on the system as a fail and if you try to bring it to another garage they see that it had failed.

The dealer I took mine to a couple years ago didn't pass mine because of my stinger and tires stuck out to much. Went to a little shop instead and passed. Never been hassled for tires sticking out by cops just when getting inspected

Glad I don't live up there. Stupid laws. Tires can't stick out, get hassled running doorless. Who knows what else. Ridiculous. Good luck OP.

As long as you get it done at a private garage and not a state run facility, you'll be golden. If you are unsure, when you pull in, tell the guy "are my tires a problem" if he says no, youre good if he says yes go elsewhere.

This is the state that doesn't require helmets for riders? I didn't know pa had that law, I see a lot of folks with thread sticking out when im there.

if the small time garage doesn't work, you can always borrow someone's set of stock wheels and switch back afterwards

No state run inspections in PA, they are all private (or dealer's).
Good mechanics need to be cultivated. You find one you trust and does not overcharge, then you keep going back to him. When they see the repeat business they will work with you and not try to get every little thing because they know they have a steady customer.

I live in pa have never had any issues when getting inspected. Now when you get pulled over it may be a different story

Well if you saw in my opening post i was looking for suggestions on how to COMPLY with states requirements by getting fender extensions.

But the jeep passed without any problems. The guy actually was cracking jokes about how big they were and asked if I plan to climb mountains with the jeep.

Or call PennDOT and find out what the actual law is. I thought I read somewhere that you can be 1 width of tread outside the flair but dont quote me on that.

I lived in PA most of my life and I believe the restriction is that the tire can not stick out more than 2" passed the fender.

when I brought mine in the first time I asked, do I have to bring this home & put the original tires back on it to pass inspection? it was a small place I always go to. he said, no but if anyone asked you had them on when you came in here. after that I never had to mention it again.

worst case scenario find a friend that will swap tires with you for the day. lucky I never had to resort to that.
