So stooped by my local repair/service shop to show off my new (used) 2010 JK. And while admiring my new purchase he asked if some of the lights I put on were stock. I told him "no" and he told me new PA rules will not pass any auto with aftermarket lighting. Including even running or fog lights unless they are wired with the high beams. This seems a bit out there. Come on really? So he told me when I come in for inspection I will need to remove them. And he also mentioned inspection stations are now required to check tinted windows as well. If it's not factory tinted, ya fail. Crazy!!!!

So you can't only run stock headlights in PA, or only DOT approved headlights. Also if you wire fogs into the stock harness they will act exactly like the stock fogs would. Not following the law change or how it works.
Also so it can't be darker than factory tint or how the hell would they know factory tint from after market tint on the front or call you not have the fronts tinted at all in PA.

I was just in Easton, PA last week and if this is true then there are going to be a lot of pissed off jeepers up that way. There was at least 4 nicely setup rigs at the hotel I was staying at and they a had aftermarket led headlights. I know 1 bought some round leds off of me while I was there so I hope that it isn't true, or it sucks if it is. I'm glad NC is very loose with there DOT laws. Pretty much if it cranks up and goes it's legal here.

When I lived in NJ many years ago, off road lights were OK, but needed to have covers on them while on on public roads.

Dramatically smaller, less expensive, less intrusive, less powerful government. Your ballot is on the kitchen table. You know what to do.

So you guys get inspected once a year?

It takes about 10-15 minutes to swap the stock lights for the non-DOT lights you might run for off-road use.

Just had state inspection yesterday. No issues passing. I have aux spots, fogs, LED brake and turn signals..... Passed with flying colors. Not sure what your mechanic is talking about!

I live in PA, and I think such a new law is a great idea (if its true).

I was driving up Rt309, and from the other direction, is this great big ball of light coming toward me. I thought I was heading toward an alien encounter straight out of Close Encounters.

Then the panic set in, as I remembered reading that due to their budget cut backs, aliens weren't using lube on their anal probes anymore. :mooning:

After this great ball of light passed me, and I gave a sigh of relief (not aliens), I looked in my rear view mirror to see that it wasn't really an alien space craft, but actually just a Wrangler with all his many off-road, and auxiliary, lights 'on'. I bet he thought he was one really cool dude showing off his lights like that.

Such proves why such a law is really required. Not to punish the good folk, but to fully stop a-holes like this. If this makes anyone here unhappy, then you need to thank guys like this for intentionally ruining it for everyone.

As to window tinting. That isn't new. There was even an enforcement blitz a while back. If an officer thought your tinting was too dark, or on a front side window or, worse, the windshield, he would pull you over and measure the tint level. If illegal, it was more than simply a ticket. Since it was a safety issue, you were strictly prohibited from driving the vehicle at all until fixed. So, you either had to have it towed, or remove the tinting right then and there. The local paper ran a picture of some poor young guy scraping the tinting off his driver's door window, while stopped off on the side of the road, with an (overweight) officer standing in the background watching.

BTW, not mentioned, is that PA has bumper height laws. If you do a lift, make sure your bumpers aren't exceeding the max height allowed, or you'll fail your annual safety inspection for that.

Walt a law already exists to keep tool bags from driving illuminated like this.... his ass should have been handed a couple tickets to keep his ego in check next time.

As already stated above, u can have all the bells and whistles on ur jeep. Go to a proper inspection station that is experienced with jeep law.

Guys no need to b puckering up, nothing has changed.

Fortunately we don't punish the majority of those who know when and how to use their lights for the bad manners of those few who don't. I like my aux lights and know when, which is few and far between, to use them.

I just stumped upon this about wheel spacers too...

4. Section 175.65(h) (relating to tires and wheels) has been added to prohibit the use of spacers or similar devices to increase wheel track. Spacers are devices installed between the hub and wheel of the vehicle to increase the distance the tire and wheel assembly extends beyond the body. When this is done, the tires' tread will often extend beyond the body and cause splash and spray conditions during periods of inclement weather. Additionally, the use of spacers decrease the amount of available wheel bolt thread that is used to secure the wheel assembly to the vehicle. The addition of this subsection will help ensure the safety of the motoring public as well as operators of affected motor vehicles.

I found this, but I am unsure if it is current, up-to-date. Note its very specific that all off-road and aux lights must be covered when you're on the road (which would include when driving into an inspection station). Also, check the height of any lights you might have mounted over the windshield to make sure they aren't over the max allowed by law.

It appears to have the subsection numbers off to the right. Just go to the PA code site and see if the info is current/accurate.

As for your previous statements about outlawing auxiliary lights, makes me wonder if you also support the government taking our guns away to "stop" gun violence.

As for my lights. I simply pull my fuses when I go for inspection. If asked "the lights are just for looks".
My windows, I roll them down.
Problem(s) solved.

The Door issue is a different matter and one we have been trying to get amended to exclude Jeeps.

Now now. Don't knock PA too much. It's a great state to live in. Low probability of earthquakes and proximity to ocean without threat of winding up a part of it!! And very friendly :welcome:

Every State has its Pros and Cons. Most people either live where they were born or eventually return there.
Predictability, familiarity, family/friends memories.
Is Pa perfect? No but neither is anywhere. The inspections used to be every 6 mos. Can you imagine.
You learn to deal and play the game.
I have to get Two(2) inspections safety and emissions in my county. Neighboring counties - No.
I guess air is vertical.

Well I'm going to ask my shop for the paper work he is referring to. Because I have a 20 year relationship with him and he is on top of things. He even called his head mechanic out to confirm his remarks. So I'll try to see if I can get additional documentation on the subject Monday. Anyway if it's not true so be it. Just passing on what I was told.

Bent out of shape much? The only presidential reference in this thread is yours.
