Paint Issues

So I know this has been discussed before, but figured I'd give an update for anyone who is interested. I ordered a black '16 JKU last summer. I quickly noticed what appeared to be a lack of paint around all the hinges on the doors as well as the hood. I put in a claim with FCA back in November I believe and its been a very long and frustrating process but I think I'm finally on the right track.

Recently brought it to the dealer's body shop who had just repainted a black '16 JK with the same issues.

In addition to all the hinges, there is a lack of paint on the top of the front fender (you can see it in the gap between the front fender and the cowel) There was a lack of paint behind the door hinge pins, very little pain under the lip on both sides all along the top of the rear fenders where the soft top would hook under.

Really poor. I was told the whole thing had to be repainted and would take a couple weeks which aggravates me because I won't have my jeep for a few weeks this summer.

I've seen pics of missing paint around the door hinges on this forum but not the other areas i mentioned. I'll take some pics and post.

Can you post pics,?

Yes, I'll post some pics as soon as I can. Certainly going to see it more with black. Don't know if they just had a bad stretch of painting when they did black or if other colors have the same issue but isn't noticeable, especially with a grey or silver.

Currently waiting for the body shop to give FCA an estimate and then I guess they will schedule to have the truck repainted.

Hey, All!

Oddly enough, my 2016 75th Edition suffers from this same problem. Very curious. It seems like this is a fairly widespread issue. :|

My Sarge is missing paint behind the door hinges/pins, and also on the inside rear tailgate lip. I just assumed it was shoddy quality control. Did your Dealer balk at repainting the entire vehicle?

My concern was that eventually those area might become susceptible to rust and corrosion. The "primer" appears to be fine underneath, though.

Please share some pics if you can - I am curious if yours looks the same as mine. I will try to get/post a couple pics as well. Thanks!

Regards,

Bob~

My 2016 HR has this issue. The dealer gave me the run around about it, and lied to my face by telling me they submitted pictures to Chrysler, when my Chrysler customer service rep said they hadn't. The service manager then proceeded to lie directly to the jeep customer service rep about it. Once we finally caught him in his lies, he finally said he wasn't going to submit pictures of the hinges because it was normal now. Either way, the dealership permanently lost me as a customer for new car purchases as well as service.

Interesting. I bought a 2016 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel on 3/30. Noticed a large paint blemish on the front fender the day after delivery. The service manager took pictures and told me he was submitting them to FCA Digital Imaging.

It's been six weeks now. I've been asking them every week for status and they said they haven't heard anything back. So I called FCA yesterday and opened a case. Today, the case manager called me back and just happen to be the same one that started the case on my JKU. She confirmed the VIN and the dealer work order # that I had, checked the system and told me they never submitted it. She was going to call the service manager this afternoon and get back with me.

What is it with these crappy FCA dealer service departments? Do they think if they ignore us during warranty we'll go away until the warranty is up when they can charge us the big bucks?

When they painted the hinges, did they unbolt them and then paint them?

here is one between the cowl and the front fender. doesn't show up well in the pic but again, zero paint. Same for around all hinges on doors and hood. Apparently there is paint missing behind the door pins as well and the lip on the inside top of the rear door is messed up. Not to mention I have a bunch of orange peel on the front passenger fender. I'll post more detail of my experience with FCA on this hopefully today.

so here has been my tale with FCA to date. Started out probably a week or two after I got the jeep that I found a thread on this forum about the lack of paint around the hinges. That made me look and sure enough I had the same problem.

I put in a claim with FCA probably in November of 2015. I was asked to take it to any local jeep dealer and have them take pictures. I did.

The claim rep said she never got them, so she called the dealer and spoke to one of the customer service people there and then called me back and told me to go back and ask for him specifically. So I did.

We met, he took several pictures and we even looked at other new black jeeps on the lot that had the same issue.

After that, the FCA rep acknowledged that it was a defect and asked me what I would like to do to resolve it. After some back and forth, I said just repaint it.

Next thing i know, she is no longer on my claim and I get a new rep. She then calls me and says she doesn't have any pics and that I need to go to the dealer again. So I did.

After the 3rd time, i emailed the rep and told her I took the jeep and she said ok, she would get back to me. After a few weeks, I started to email and call the new claim rep to get an update but could never get a hold of her. She never responded to my emails or returned my phone call.

So one day I hit zero to get to a human and they proceed to tell me that my claim was closed because I never took the jeep to get pictures taken. Needless to say the poor woman on the phone got an ear full of F bombs. I was pissed.

So now I am on claim rep number three and what does she need? You guessed it, pictures. So I take it to the same dealer for the 4th time. The rep at the dealer shows me his computer which has 4 or 5 of the pictures that were taken previously in the "system."

He thinks that maybe nothing has happened because FCA needs a quote from teh body shop as to how much its going to cost to repaint.

So I get back in the Jeep and head over to the dealers body shop. I talk to the head guy there who takes his own pictures and tells me that he just repainted a 2016 black jeep with the same problems. He then proceeds to show me even more areas that don't have paint than I knew about.

I tell the FCA rep that I brought it to the body shop and that's where I stand. That was a few weeks ago and I've not heard from anyone yet. Assuming it does get repainted, I was told it would take several weeks. Several weeks out of the summer where I don't have my toy. Anyway, I will keep this tread updated of any changes but its been a long frustrating road.

Shit that's brutal.

Btw the value of the jeep is worth less on re-sale because of paint work. I would NOT be happy right now.

I don't really care about resale value thankfully. I bought it to hopefully keep it for a very very long time. Since its not my daily driver, its just a fun summer toy but I'm not happy about the run around I've been given.

The thing that pissed me off the most was that the second FCA rep (Olympia) put in the file notes that she attempted multiple times to contact me without success in order to get me to go down to the dealer for the 3rd time for pictures. She put in the file that I never responded so that is why they closed the file.

I swear on the sole of my late mother she never called nor did she email. IN FACT, I actually told her after I left the dealer for the 3rd time that I had the pictures taken and she indicated that she would get back to me.

Its as if she put in the notes whatever she wanted even though its wasn't true and now subsequent FCA reps are taking that as what actually happened. makes me seem like a lying nut.

I'm a lawyer by day and I wonder how it would go over if I was able to certify a class of wrangler owners with paint issues for a class action. Maybe that would get some attention. Now that I think of it, anyone want to be the lead plaintiff? Anyone with similar paint issues, please contact me!!!!

This paint scratches SO easily. I take great care of my car , wash with two bucks after LONG rinsing and i have light 5 6 inche scratches in 3 or 4 spots that I have no clue where they came from. Swirls are already bad and i have 4k miles and 3 months into the car. I am going to polish and wax it asap and hope it helps.

Just an update. Going on almost a month since I brought the jeep to the dealers body shop. I got a voicemail from FCA about 2 weeks ago that they were going to get back to me but have heard nothing. Typical. I called the body shop and asked to speak with the guy I met with and who took all the pictures and told me he repainted a JKU with the same issues. He never returned my call. Typical.

Bought my 16' Rubicon Jk back in April. Noticed the same issues and my jeep has been at the dealership now going on week 2. Dealer called and left me a message today stating we need to have a conversation about my jeep. I called back 2 minutes later of course he doesn't answer and now waiting on call back. Very nerve racking considering its brand new with only 5k miles. Hoping they take care of the issue without the bs run around.

Talked to dealer stated that entire jeep has to be repainted and has already been to the shop for a quote. But will have to wait for District Manager to come in and look at it for approval wich could take several weeks before he comes back in. So taking loaner back today and will take my jeep back to dealer so the DM can "look it over" next time he is there. At that point they will give me another loaner and get it painted. So far not resolved as quickly as I had hoped but I will keep you guys posted on my status.

Yeah, normally.

Not when they did something at the factory to make the paint soft. Why do you run from paint thread to paint thread defending Chrysler?

Do you think we are lying? Do you think we are stupid and don't really have these issues?

Newsflash, this is my third wrangler and only one that's exhibited these paint issues. Not to mention it's an all around worse vehicle than my other two (2012, 2013).

Stop trying to tell others what's wrong or not wrong with their stuff when you don't have the first clue what Chrysler did or didn't do to the paint.

2011 Black JKU - so many places where the paint is thin or missing - I just accept this as a jeep thing. As sad as it sounds I could care less, as I know FCA could care less, so we have 2016 people talking about paint issues that have been around since likely 2007 (shows you who cares). That's 9 years of bad paint jobs...
