Painted Screws For Jeep/Mopar Gas Door / Pics

Ever since I bought my Jeep gas door the silver screws that came with it have been bothering me every time I look at the side of my Jeep.

So today I did something about it. Took some pics of before, during the painting process, and after. I airbrushed the screws with about 8 very thin coats of flat black paint. The screws were mounted onto a scrap piece of abs plastic which i drilled six 3/8" holes into. The screws fit very snug into the 3/8" slots... perfect to hold them while painting.

Just thought I'd share in case someone else wants to do this to theirs.

Great job. I would be afraid of it coming off while your screwing them in. Did you have to do any touch ups?

no, i was extremely careful screwing them back in. It was a delicate process actually to not mess up the finish.

I'm actually going to take them back out and run one more coat over them then run a non glossy clear coat over them just to protect the finish.

That's what I love about this forum.

Just as I am getting ready to do a project, someone beats me to it and gives some reviews.

Looks good.

I purchased mine from a local dealer - they gave me a decent deal. Some of the WF guys get theirs off ebay or other sites for the Jeep/Mopar door.

A Q-tip with some paint on it works a treat for installation touch-ups on painted fastener hardware.

If you don't use too much paint you can kinda mash it into a torx or hex head to great effect.

I haven't purchased yet, but I was thinking of doing that and painting the "jeep" on the cap flame red to match the jeep. Anyone else done that?

I was thinking of doing mine but not that high on the priority list right now. Actually, I dont mind the little chrome screws.

Poke em into a piece of cardboard, and hit em with some touch up paint or nail polish or spray bomb.... what ever you have handy Then you can touch em up easy if you wreck em installing.

Up close you cannot even tell it was painted.

I used Model Master Flat Black enamel paint mixed with some enamel thinner. Then used my cheapo airbrush with a compressed air can.

The paint can be found in any hobby store. If you cannot find Model Master brand, I have used Testors brand with great success on my RC cars in the past.

Try this trick I learned from my bother. Take a thin piece of plastic (like the packaging of the part you are installing) place over the end of your torx, screwdriver, socket etc. works every time

Also helps if you rough them up with scotch brite and use a self etching primer.

OP looks great I may have to steel this idea I did the same thing on my dually screws but never thought of the gas cover.

Would a 2 dr fuel door be different than a 4dr? Looking for one but guy says it's for 2dr and that 4dr has different part number.

YES, they are different. I found out the hard way, the index nub is in a different spot on the 4dr vs the 2dr. dont ask me why.
Externally they are identical.

@7ekken: Did the holes in the fuel door you installed line up with the factory holes? Was there drilling involved? Or was it just a screw on installation??? Looks sharp!!! I am thinking of adding this to my 2010 Sport!!!! Thanks

There was no drilling needed. The factory housing is not screwed in, it is held in with plastic clips. The new one is a clip in also. The instructions have you remove the 2 screws closest to the center of the vehicle from the drivers tail light for access. The screws you see on the new cover go into the new clipped in housing.

I know this is a link to another forum, but he does a pretty good job with pictures and an explanation of how he installed his door.
