Painting Freedom Top Panels! Suggestions Please!

Ahoy Shipmates!

I recently purchased two Freedom Top Panels, to use as a Bikini Top. These are hard to find, without buying the entire Hard Top set.

The ones I purchased are Khaki, and I want to have the outsides painted. I called the Dealer today, and got a quote of $550!

Nuff said there!!! I only paid $460 with UPS Shipping for the Panels, so I'm not going to pay more to have them painted, than I did to initially buy them.

Tomorrow, I'm heading over to my local Paint and Body Shop to get a quote. I'll see if they can get much closer to a more reasonable price.

If this option doesn't make the cut, I'm considering doing a Rattle-Can Paint Job, and top it off with a Clearcoat.

Has anyone done this on the Freedom Top Fiberglass Panels? Is this something that would properly adhere to the Fiberglass, or will it eventually chunk up and blow off?

I'm looking at using Krylon Fusion. It's a No-Prep Paint, and made to adhere to Plastics and Fiberglass.

I don't want to do a Fast Job, and I don't want to do a Slow Job, and I certainly don't want to do a Half-Fast Job! I just want to do a good quality Paint Job that will last me for a few years!

Any suggestions out there in the Jeep Realm, regarding Paint Brand, Quality, and Application, would be most appreciated!

Thanks!

Cheers!

BB

Depending on what the body shop says, try to find an airbrush guy that does custom cars/bikes... A small shop will be able to use factory quality paints and not charge so much. Keep in mind, the paint itself will be a big expense if you go with factory quality. That said, I see no reason you can't rattle can it yourself. You might also consider rattling it yourself and get the clear coat done at a shop.

Make sure it's clean before you do anything, wash it with some Dawn, or comet, or TSP or something to get the waxes/oils off it, scuff it, prime it and paint it. But there may be more too it than that, not being familiar with the substrate. Our miss Kate used to work in a body shop, and she has awesome painting skills and knowledge. Hopefully she'll chime in here soon. If not, look her up, and see what she has to say!
