Paracord grab handles.

I wanted something a little different so I decided to make paracord grab handles for rollbar that matches the color of my Jeep. This is the first one of the set that I finished tonight, its over the driver side rollbar.

looks great. what type of connection did you use for the part that goes around the roll bar? it is hard to tell from the photos but it looks like it might be a buckle.

If it is a buckle I would switch it out for a mini shackle like these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 they will hold alot more weight

Those look great. How did you figure out how to make them?

This one does have a snap buckle and it holds pretty tight but I will be looking for something stronger. I make paracord items and the shackles would be stronger but they may be hard to secure with a tight fit around the bar. This one is mainly to see how I like it.

I learned that stitch in boy scouts at age 12 called a cobra stitch...or most special forces guys know how to make that stitch...or put on youtube and see about a million instructional vids on how to make that stitch.

Thank you. I've been wanting to try to make these but didn't know the stitch.

As mentioned, You Tube is a great source for paracord knots. Do a search on You Tube for "TIAT"

it is harder to get it on but once it is on it will be alot stronger. I made myself a full set for my yj with 2 front and 2 rear grab handles, driver and passenger door pull handles, and door limiting straps.

How long did you cut the paracord for going around the rollbar? I tried to make them following the video -- came out great but it was too short for getting around the rollbar.

The used 43 1/2" for cord for the center core going over the roll bar. This seemed to give a nice tight fit to the bar when finished. Even then getting the shackle bolt through the loops was a little tough.

Thanks very much! Back to the drawing board! The video said 35" I think -- way too small. The handle part came out good though!

I just made a set of red and black ones for mine this last week, no pics yet. Mine was pretty close to wolf's at 45" for the center core around the bar and I used shackles as well. Yours look great!

The best way to figure out that length is to mock up the core by looping the cord around your fastener of choice (i recommend mini shackles) and trying to put it on. the thing with this is that when you weave the cord the core will loose some length so you have to make it a little longer than you would think. other than that you just have to experiment to get it right. Welcome to my addiction, I've been making just about everything i can think of out of paracord. Dog collars and leashes, knife grips, pull tabs for zippers, slings, wraps for anything that you don't want to scuff up. There are an infinite number of uses for paracord. I recommend buying a bulk roll of it from online, you can get it alot cheaper than buying 50 feet at a time.

Thanks for the insight. I did modify the one I had started by burning some pieces together to redo the wraps. I got it done and on but even at 44" it was mighty tight getting it on. Of course I cut all my cord this morning for the other side thinking that was long enough....and it was, but barely.

What do you do to secure the ends? I burned them but they still popped loose when I was struggling with the install. I think a do-over is in order.

Where do,you order from online? Amazon or somewhere else? I can see the addiction-- it's super easy to do and satisfying to make stuff. Dog collars are a great idea!

Surprise straps makes a set also and will do it in any color or combination of colors. Bought a set for my jeep and like them allot. It is cool to make your own though. Good job.

How wide do the straps end up being?

Cobra buckles would be a cool way to connect around the roll bar, but the smallest I can find are 1".

i order from amazon but you have to be careful to make sure that you get true 7 strand 550 cord. some places are selling cheap crap. Amazon.com : Royal Blue Parachute Cord 550lb Nylon USA Paracord Spool 1000' : Camouflage Hunting Apparel : Sports & Outdoors this is where i ordered from last time it was good cord.

About securing the ends, if you melt it together perfectly the joint will be almost as strong as the rest of the cord. make sure that the core and the outer casing are even with each other and really melt the heck out of it (i prefer a torch lighter because it melts faster). Push them together really well, wet your fingers and press around the outside of the joint so that it isn't a big lump. (disclaimer: make sure you press the joint in fast little touches or else it will burn you and you may still get some minor burns this way)

Thanks. I did get a few burns but no biggie. I didn't burn the ends together-- looked like people were just burning the end and tucking. There's my error!! Oh well. I guess I need to buy more cord and start over. I needed a reason to order more cord anyway!

No problem I like helping people especially when it is about something I am passionate about. To get a strong bond you definitely have to melt both ends and press them together pretty well. I think that is one of the mistakes that alot of people make.

While the one grab handle I completed has held up, it's sloppy....I think I'm going to start over. Even at 45" for the rollbar, it's a bit too tight and I think the handle might be a bit too short.

Wolf, what color paracord did you use to match your Jeep? I'm about to start making grab handles and selling them locally but it's hard to figure out what colors match the different colored Jeeps.
