Pavement End's Emergency Top

Has anyone used this top? Or has anyone heard of a similar top? With the weather so nice, I'm planning already for summer. Ideally, I want to just run with no top/doors for the summer, and I like the look of this top for those "oh crap" times when it suddenly starts raining, but I still need to use jeep. I've seen alot of cab tops, but this one appears to be the only one that leaves the front window open so you can drive with it. Are there any others? or if you've used this, any feedback? Thanks!

I wrote a review of this top. We bought it and did a test installation but have never had to use it for real - so far. That thread is:

ah very cool. does the material seem durable? the picture you posted makes it seem like a cheap tarp, doesnt look like it would hold up to driving on the highway at all! thanks for the info!

Seems easier to keep the soft top on the car since "it won't work well with hardtop models."

I have a softtop, I just think the jeep looks sexier without the ragtop folded up like a pile of towels at the back of the jeep. Plus I have the safari straps cage back there, and it just doesnt work as well as I would with both the safari straps and the soft top. Like it works, just looks kinda off. Total personal preference I know, but hey, that's why I'm asking!

I don't think it's made for highway driving is it?

For the time it would take you to put the emergency top on, you would have your soft top up.

top up is easier. dealing with the windows is the suck. mostly because you need to store them somewhere. and that takes up space. I have one of the roll up systems, but its still a hassle

Do I understand correctly that this is only compatible if you have the softtop door surrounds installed, ie: useless to us hardtoppers how leave their lid at home?

The emergency top does have the plastic strip sewn into the top for slipping into the front door surrounds (soft top owners), but as well has extra fabric sewn in to wrap / secure the top around the roll bar / B-pillar (hard top owners).

Good to know, thanks. I did the chat thing on q-tec and they told me it was a "no go" without the surrounds, which as another poster noted, defeats it's purpose if you can just fold down your soft top and bring with you anyways, if rain is a possibility.

Top Down, do you have experience with this top without the surrounds?

hmm, I hadn't even thought of that. I know whenever I take off the surrounds, I like it, but my wife hates it, so I just leave them in. Or I used to, until I broke one on a tree while offroading! So yeah, any info on the surrounds would be great!

I have an '08 4 door, OEM hardtop and bought my emergency top in '09. Have used it many times (driving < 45 mph too). I can't imagine they altered the top and created a new version. I don't understand Quadratec's statement about the belt rail system and hardtop models. All Wranglers have the rear tub belt rail. Maybe people are thinking of installing this top over the hard top?? Impossible anyway. On Quadratec's site, look at the "installation instructions" for this top. Step 4 and 5 show your two options with / without surrounds. Both options are sewn into the top.

Awesome, thanks for the info. This has been added to my wish list.

Shouldn't be an issue. The PE top is not what you'd call a precision fit.

I have the Pavement Ends version. I also only have a hard top, brief top and safari straps, in various configurations at any given time. It works fine without the door surrounds and I have put it on over the brief top, the front freedom panels, and the safari straps with no problems. I've also driven on the highway at around 65 mph in 15-20 mph winds without incident. It does start to flap around pretty bad at that speed, but has held up fine.

I am trying to install mine today (PE not Qtec) and everything works but the area around the doors (2dr). I don't have any extra fabric (like I saw in another post) or anything to close the gap nor do I see how the bottom strap is supposed to work. Any help?
