Most OHC engines do have rockers.

Same deal with mine...sounds normal until the oil reaches the top end, probably due to cold weather.

It has rockers and lifters, just not in the normal configuration and probably not officially called that. They are probably called followers and lash adjusters because the lifters don't move and the rockers don't really rock.

To be honest its louder than the valvetrain noise from our 2005 Town & Country with 90k miles...

Food for thought. I had a 2008 JKU, did an oil and filter with mobil 1 oil and a mobil 1 filter. The next morning the motor rattled and ticked until the oil got to the top end. After doing some research, it seems like the filter had a faulty check valve and it drained over night. It happened after sitting at work all day also. Went with the Purolator Gold series. Highly rated filter and never looked back. Just another possibility.

I guess that's a possibility but im speaking of a brand new Jeep. Its possible it will just go away as the engine gets broken in... otherwise ill take it to the dealer... they just tend to say everything is a normal sound.

I don't think that would apply here because the 3.6 uses a cartridge type filter instead of the traditional filter.

I'll let you know in a few hours
Going to disassemble the old one

Pulled the dipstick this morning it's about a qt over the full mark. Hopefully this is the reason for the change in sound

I'm thinking too much oil is causing it to get aireated(read foaming) which can cause lots of problems

Interesting. Is there a right and wrong way to install the cartridge? Sounds like maybe the oil wasn't flowing through it.

OK, tough for me to diagnose w/o hearing it. Keep in mind the filter is on the top of the engine, and might not be holding oil when it sits over night . As a result there might be some slight start up rattle when it gets cold when the oil is "thicker" than during warm weather. These engines might also be a bit noisy due to design, and the noise is something you have to live with. Just the fact that they have that noise dampening cover on the top of the engine might be a tip off. JMO

Its valve train noise, normal when its cold. Should quiet down some when the engine is warm.

Maybe the exhaust cooling down? Nothing in the engine would be at that frequency.

If the sound does not increase with RPM then its not inside the motor ...Its not something moving inside the motor. AKA not RPM dependent = look else where.

Speaking of full of sh!t, why don't you give us a list of things in the engine that happen every 3 seconds. To help you with the math an engine idling at 600 rpm completes every mechanical operation it does 5 times every second.

Not to pour fuel on the fire....but we all know that it never sounds like 5 times per second....but 3 seconds apart is an awefully long time, I will agree there.

Perfect example
Where did you come up with the 600 rpm
Idle figure
Does the Pentastar idle at 600?
No you pulled that # out of thin air

I don't want to argue about it
But you have got to admit some of the theories in this thread were shot from the hip

I didn't pull it out of thin air, I picked a number that was easy to do the math for. It doesn't matter anyway. At 1200 rpm it does everything 10 times a second. The question remains, what in the engine happens every 3 seconds?
