personal opinion on aftermarket muffler

Hi all.

I am aware that exhaust systems and mufflers have been talked over a good deal. I'm just looking for the most up to date opinions for what sounds the best.

I have a damaged 2012 unlimited muffler, it's,
not allowing enough air to escape. It has a small dent in it, thus the dealership refuses to warranty it.

Side note, if you are in the tri state area, never go to patriot jeep in Oakland MD. I have never experienced the level of poor service those people somehow achieve.

So if I have to pay for a new muffler, I may as well get a nice one. Any thoughts?

If its a small dent it should not effect the performance.

I put an oreillys special 29.99 on the jeep today. Sounds decent, not to loud at all and the price is right. Flowtech raptor. Flowteck is holleys affordable brand

I can't say why a small dent would effect the performance. But my gas mileage has tanked, there is a burning smell, the exhaust is hotter than the sun, and it will not rev past 3.5k Rpms. Its a manual. The dealership is telling me their "best guess" Is the muffler. This is another dealer nightmare story, but I'm not sure what I can do.

If it wasn't doing it from day 1 on a '12 Jeep, how did the dent get there and why would it be a warranty issue?

Easy. take a 15mm socket and lossen the clamp right before the muffler and take it off. if it fixes it then replace the muffler. if not back to dealer. probably a differant dealer.

This leads me to believe that you think a small dent in a muffler will cause this, instead of something else. And it also leads me to believe that if something goes wrong after you take it home for the first time warranty shouldn't have to worry about it?

Not at all! Unless the exhaust is so restricted (more than a small dent) it is causing the computer to shut it down or putting it in limp mode, I think it is more likely a bad/plugged cat or a bad O2 sensor.

I did not get from the OP's post that the Jeep was just purchased. If so, they may have a claim depending on the purchase agreement. If they've been driving it a while and damaged it afterward it would not be a warranty issue or a reflection of bad dealer service. That's why I asked the question.

I thought the cat as well. I'd like to take it to a different dealer but paying 50$ to get it "diagnosed" every time isn't fun. Its also worth mentioning there is a dent in the plate that protects the transmission, but not a scratch on the transmission itself. Because of these 2 dents the dealer will warranty nothing. Not sure how dents relate to a clogged cat or muffler.

If the cat was hit hard, it could crack. I did this to a TJ once hitting it on a rock. I also had a defective cat in a Mustang where the material cracked (not off-roading it). The small passages in the cat material get blocked when the material breaks up. Both engines struggled to reach higher RPMs and the cats both got very hot.

Photos would be nice too. I find it offputting that a few dents underneath means a dealer is going to deny any warranty item on a Jeep. If I hit debris on the highway I could dent something if it flew up just right underneath. I have a few chips under there from gravel roads.

If it's the cat, you may be able to get a generic ceramic cat from Autozone. I hit a chunk of icy sludge that fell off the pickup wheel well in front of me, it hit the cat on my Porscheand broke the insides up. I wasn't going to spend a lot to by the stock cat, I picked up the AZ ceramic cat for $57 and it worked fine.

I had a mustang with this issue as well but mine was setting a cat code. I would imagine jeeps would do the same thing

What ended up happening in my case was one of the two bad cats became completely clogged and caused a missfire really bad. Cut them off and it was so much faster
No restriction, sounded better and everything

^ This. I agree with the others that the muffler is not the issue.

There shouldn't be any charge to have something looked at. Help us help you here. Explain how the dents got there.

I'm thinking an exploration in the back woods, the evap canister could be damaged by the sounds of things as well.
