Poison Spyder Bombshell Diff Covers

Hey Everyone.

Got some Poison Spyder Diff Covers. Figured you'd want pics.

I might even bash one with a hammer. Im pretty sure it can take a good shot. They are thick and heavy.

Here's a shot of them in bare steel. We painted them a few times, pics coming.

We started out with the dremel, with a wire wheel to scuff them up. Used the dremel 8220 cordless rotary tool. I had the Saw Max there too, so its in the picture, I cut 1/4 inch steel with the saw max before. They are tough little machines.

Flat Black

We went with Flat black after the primer. I wanted to do the flat black as the background and cut out the spider and have it be the hammered finish.

It would have looked super cool, but I just couldnt get the painters tape to work on the paint. I could get it on there, but when I tried to cut out the spider, I would take the base paint off. It was a nightmare.

Regardless, I plan to bash them into stuff, so im going to need to be able to just respray them later. So no big deal.

Hammered Black Finish

Here's a shot of the diff cover in hammered black. This was the final decision for the paint job.

Installed

Here it is installed.

We were installing the Artec Axle Armor kit, so this cover wet on last. Here's how it looked. The Axle was just sprayed with glossy black paint.

If you were wondering what VasylfromUkraine looked like, thats him on the left.

Very nice, love the armor kit

How was the Artec stuff to put on? Did you get the whole kit?

Some day, I want that kit, as the start to my 35's and all the other stuff you need for them.

Like the covers, but why no drain hole? Seems like they dropped the ball on that.

Those covers are made for abuse not convienance. Do you really want a drain hole where your going to be rubbin on rocks? By eliminating the lower drain plug makes the cover stronger.

The old covers were Riddler covers. I don't know about these though.

Honestly, I like their bumpers and stiff but seems like lately their QC and CS is going down hill the more popular they get.

Funny I was just looking at these on their website. Was debating on getting these or AEV skid plate.. To be honest, not really digging the Spyder design

Don't need one. The bottom side of the diff housing has a drain.

Yes i got the whole kit, Its not hard to put on, but its time consuming. Its very easy to understand, but the cleaning the welds takes time, and paint takes time.....etc. The cut of the parts was good, but you do need to be prepared to alter some stuff if your fitting isn perfect.

I feel like the drain hole is in the housing. Not the cover.

HammerTime!

Here's the testing. Check it out.

The stock diff cover held up better than expected. After seeing the punishment it took, i feel less that changing them immediatly is less neccessary than I thought.

The stock cover however didnt survive the testing.

The Poison spyder bombshell did however. This exact diff cover will be installed soon.

Once you install one of these your gears are safe as can be.

Great stuff! Thanks for sharing. These new Bombshell covers are much thicker than or old design. Our calculations show the housing failing before the cover does. They are also much mor resistant to punctures, which is what typically kills the stock covers.
Thanks again for sharing.

Sorry to bring up an old tread, but has anyone rattle canned the cover? How did you use painters tape without messing up the base paint?

I just got these in bare steel and was looking for some tips

Hey bud!

I was the one who did the paint job on these, and yes, they are rattle canned. That is the only way to paint something you expect to hit on rocks. You want to be able to touch it up after you hit something without having to take it off.

You can see i primed it and then went matte black. the idea was a hammered black spyder on a matte background.

When I tried to tape it off, maybe i did it too soon, as the tape was pulling off the paint, especially if i was trying to cut the tape with a razor to get in the fiddly areas of the spyder.

I gave up and sprayed the whole thing hammered. It wasnt worth the aggravation. and it is aggravating. If you do better post pics!

Here's mine

I rattle canned the self etching primer, then rattled flat black

Waited 2 weeks for it to dry (got busy at work, and the D30 was in the mail)

On the D44 cover, I used 3M blue painter's tape to trace the outline of the spyder and cut it out using and xacto blade. I sprayed it with mopar dozer then took off the tape. It looked horrible and the edges were very rough. To fix this, I got a fine detailing brush, sprayed some flat back into it's own cap, and used that to touch up the edges.

For the D30, I got in touch with PSC and they said to use a detailing brush instead.

So I went to sherwin willaims paint, got 1/2 pint of Dozer paint for $28, some detailing paint brushes at a crafts store, and went at it

Here are some pics of both
