I basically just wanted to get a feel for how many 2012s seem to make more noise than they should vs. how many seem to be normal. There is no good way that I know of that we could quantify how much noise is normal. This is a big part of the reason that I included a category for people who have confirmed problems with one or both heads.

For those who don't believe they have the tick, I wanted to see how many miles they have on their Jeeps. Maybe the problem just hasn't started yet for some folks.

If we can keep this going long enough and get enough people to vote, maybe we can begin to see just how common the head problems, not just the "ticking," really are.

I appreciate your participation.

Tomster
I understand what your saying Tom. The poll is great as is and will accomplish the goal you set. Thank you.

I have to believe that out of a million plus Pentastar Engines there's probably going to be a factory error once in a while.

These Forums are a perfect vehicle for discussing issues related to owner problems, as opposed to those without problems, and at any one time on any given day, just on the JK Forum, around 700 people can be signed on, and if this engine problem was rampant I think your poll would indicate more problems.

It also seems to me that Chrysler has put a ton of money in this engine and if it's a general manufacturing error they will take care of business. I may be eating these words down the line, but for now I love my Wrangler Sport and have had no engine issues what so ever.

Many of you may have followed this link,

The Trenton Engine South plant for building the Pentastar V6

to the Pentastar Factory, I found it interesting and it left me with a more positive attitude. I know that doesn't help those of you who are having problems, lets hope Chrysler follows through with a fix for you.

I'm with ya, Al. I love my 2012 JK Sport too and have had no problems so far.

Let's just hope that the folks who have problems get them resolved to their satisfaction and that this problem is extremely rare. We have only 7 confirmed problems so far. The ticking may not necessarily indicate a problem.

I don't know if results associated with "tick or no tick" is really going to help distinguish how big or little this problem is.

Matter of fact I believe this poll will be "inconclusive" as far as conclusions.

Good idea though Tom, maybe adding more questions might help ,like a previous poster has stated.

8,500 miles. normal ticking ~runs like a champ!

[i LOVE how, at motionless idle, she vibrates ever so slightly to the engine RPM. As if to suggest the rigs got a decked out hemi]

Yeah, Raider, I agree that tick vs no tick doesn't really tell us anything. That's why I made sure there was a category for CONFIRMED head problems. I guess that's all we really need to look at, the number of confirmed head problems vs. the total number of people who vote.

Thanks for your input.

There are 800 cylinder heads on back order (according to another tread). Let's say about 80,000 Wranglers were produced since August & about half of them reached sufficient mileage for the ticking to become a "confirmed" issue.
40,000/800=50

So 1 in every 50 Wranglers need new cylinder head(s).

Good luck to us all!

Well, we have been holding at seven confirmed head problems for a while now. I'm sure sorry that you folks have had the trouble you have had and I hope this all gets resolved to your satisfaction in a timely manner.

I'm glad that the number is not growing.

Please keep the votes coming, everyone.

There are many threads on the board here about getting heads replaced in 12s.

First noticed a ticking around 1200 miles but wasn't sure if it was just normal noise or a problem. Now at 3000 miles it's definitely more noticeable so I assume it's a real problem, no lights yet and still seems to run smooth. I'm waiting till it's more convenient for me to take it in(or it dies). JKU built 8/11

Slight tick here at 8k miles, no CEL and appears to be running perfect (Took it on a few hundred mile trip through the mountains, no power loss). Have been told by dealers previously that there is no issue and its normal so I guess I need to wait for CEL before they do anything or wait for it to blow up. Going in again to another dealer today to see if I can get a 3rd dealer opinion.

>40% reporting problem and nearly 13% with confirmed problem? Looks like something that deserves a recall. Even with a small sample and skewed voting it indicates a problem.

But of course, Jeep is perfect, so no recall is necessary.

Sitting at the dealer right now. They have a 2012 COD jku with 3 miles on it and I can hear a slight tick, dealer says its normal...oh boy....march 2012 build date. They also have a 2012 Sahara next to it, February build, no tick 7 miles on it. Waiting for mine to come out from service, ekk!

I wish we could somehow get a handle on whether or not the "tick" is an indicator of current or future head problems. I have been told that if you REALLY want to hear some serious ticking, listen to a hemi.

Ok, so some Pentastars tick and some don't. Some start out without the tick and develop a tick later. What does all that mean?

I guess we know that for all of the cases of true head problems the tick was present, don't we? But we cannot necessarily conclude from that that all engines with the tick have now or will have head problems, can we?

someone posted in another thread that they never noticed a tick but got the cel and had a head replaced....this has thrown ALL of my theories out of the window...lol sorry to screw up your theories too

Yeah, rtguy, I guess we just wait and see what happens and try not to drive ourselves crazy worrying about it.

Is there a description of the condition somewhere?
I have a new 2012 Sahara with 300 miles on it and there is a tick on acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gear, but no tick at idle.

Just a FYI, my ticking started at about 10,000 miles, the engine guy at the dealership placed a long large screwdriver on the manafold part of the head and had me hold it and I could feel the tick.
Also, it was about ten days to get the new head shipped to the dealership.

We need more participation in the poll! If you are fortunate enough not to have the problem and you have at least 5000 miles on your 2012 JK, please vote. (I know the people who have the problem are more likely to vote and need no encouragement.)

Well nevermind my post from 6 days ago. I now noticed the "tick" Have just over 1400 miles now. I am really pissed!! Wish I would of known about this problem before I bought my jeep. I would of waited until this was all corrected and possibly would of bought a 2013 instead. I would really like to know wtf chrysler did to make this happen and why just the drivers side head? Jeep runs fine but I also noticed what feels like a mis-fire at idle sometimes. No cel yet. This time I was able to vote in the poll. I am not looking forward to having my engine cracked open. Been through this before with my last truck for a timing chain issue and the mechanic that did the work managed to do it wrong causing my engine to completely fail and need of replacement 2 months after my extended warranty expired therefore it cost me ALOT of money to get it running again. But in this case with the jeep I have the extended warranty which is good so they will have to give me a car no matter what while the jeep is being butchered.
