(voted = Tick-No CEL)

I was told that it was the fuel injectors ticking. It just started ticking last week and the shift points(2nd-->3rd) seems to be a bit sluggish. We had his first first oil change done and it all started after that. They said that "Ticks are normal in Jeeps" and that there is nothing wrong with the shift points. No CEL, no codes, just my gut that says "He is not driving the same as he did two weeks ago."

So, basically, they made me feel like a ninny and nothing is wrong with my Jeep. Or so they say.....

Do they "just start" ticking whenever? What can cause a fuel injector to tick? What happens if nothing is done to stop the tick? I spent a ton of money on this and want to protect my investment as much as I can. They did not event offer me any ways to stop the tick. If it "just starts" then why can't something be done to "just fix it"?

I see reading on another thread that the torque converter might be a part of the sluggish issues, but that does not explain why both happened so close to each other and right after the first oil change.

mslandsurveyor,
The tick is much louder than a injector...one day my JKU was nice and quite the next it was sounding like a sowing machine, not sluggish at all, no lights on the dash.
mine started about 10,000 and with the help of this forum i found out that this is NOT NORMAL and let my dealer know what was going on.
You may want to talk to a different dealer.

I have the tick on mine. I have 8400 miles on her now. I first noticed it around 4000 miles which would put its onset just after my first oil change. Told my dealer about it at my last two oil changes. It's documented at least, but both times the tech said it was normal injector noise. This is not normal injector noise. This a a baby sowing machine!

9600 miles no tick. Build date July 22 2011. Just had another oil change at dealer and no errors reported from the brain.

Mine chirps:
2012 Jeep Wrangler Pentastar Ticking Chirping - YouTube

I will vote based on what they say at the service tomorrow.

The ticking is not that pronounced (yet). There was no ticking at all in the first 4,000 miles, so like many others I can't agree with the "normal injector sound" explanation.

I would like to know why 'jannikt,' a notorious Toyota shill, who, I believe does not own a Jeep, none the less a 2012, has responded to this poll indicating that he has a tick?

But of course, Jeep is perfect, so no recall is necessary.

One of the 40% is you, jannikt. And you don't have a 2012 JK.

You have no honor, sir!

I don't get why some people have the tick and some don't. Where were these heads made? Multiple places or what? Seems really strange to me why some are ok and some are bad. I have the tick but it isn't that bad yet. Can't really hear it standing beside the jeep, but when I get close to the wheel well or pop the hood I hear it. I know the difference between injector noise and lifter noise. If you want to hear true injector noise, start your jeep and take the engine cover off and for sure you will notice a difference in sound. The ticking you will hear is the injectors. Put the cover back on and if you still hear tick, guess what? It's more than likely the lifters which leads to bad head due to chryslers poor engeneering. With mine getting worse in time im waiting to see what happens after my first oil change.

40,000/800=50

So 1 in every 50 Wranglers need new cylinder head(s).

Good luck to us all!
don't take this wrong, but your estimate is not sound. you are only taking into account backordered heads here. there is a reason they are backordered, right? all the inventory is used up in repairing these issues. so it would be 800(from backorder) plus all the other inventory that has been used along the way. some have been fixed as early as 5 months ago. i'm sure there were alot of heads made over that time period.

You are right. My estimate was very lowball just to prove that there is a fairly common problem. Since then this poll escalated to a level where guessing is not required anymore. 14% confirmed = 10,000 messed up Wranglers in a 6 month production period.

Maybe the tick is caused from the owners rodding there Jeeps because of all the new found power?

Well, I know these are not statistically significant results or anything, but the poll results so far are very troubling to me.

We have 99 votes right now and 15 people have CONFIRMED head problems. We have 29 people who have a ticking noise that seems to be abnormal and is often a symptom of the defective head problem. We have 46 people who don't have the ticking but who also have less than 10K miles on their Jeeps. (The ticking has not started for many people until they have accumulated over 10K miles on their Jeeps.) We have only 9 people who have more than 10K miles and no ticking.

This is scary!

Since I bought the 2012 jeep I noticed the tick of the injectors, After I first read this thread I went out side to recheck and found the ticking continued after I turned off the ignition and removed the key. I was able to locate the source from the under side of the truck directly beneath the driver seat. It turns out that when everone found out I knocked up my girlfriend Gina her cousins, Luigi and Sanducci installed some sort of clock for me and wired it to cigarette lighter as a gift. I hit it with my roll bar mounted trench shovel and after 3 solid whacks it went silent, I got ahold of her cousins and they said for me not to worry about it, they would mail me a new one. Other than that no abnormal ticking. I'll keep you posted as the miles rack up.

I'm still 400 miles short of the minimum poll category of 5000 miles, with no tick... can't vote yet.

Should have been a 0 - 5000 mile category, duh!

I won't disrespect your poll and my fellow Jeepers and lie, like jannikt did.

Thanks, UHB.

I purposely left out the 0 - 4999 miles category because I think from what people have been saying that would be too early to have the problem anyway. I wonder how many in the 5000 - 9999 category who have posted that they do not have a tick will end up having one later.

I have not yet voted either since I have only about 3K miles on my Jeep. So far, so good.

Ok Tomster you twisted my arm. No ticking. 6600 miles. Build date 7/11. This Jeep is so quiet. All I hear is the normal engine noise. Crossing my fingers.

That's comforting. I hope we hear from a LOT more people who are not having a problem. Thanks for your post and your vote.

I have the ticking

6700 miles, started ticking after around 3000, took it to dealer, they said chrysler advises to replace lifters, and of course parts are on national back order, build date 1/31/12, so I am at there mercy now, maybe the motor will blow up so they have to replace more, aside from that the jeep is awesome, just sucks that they are having issues.....

I'm getting very nervous. I don't have a problem as far as I know, but I only have a couple thousand miles on my engine.

I will have a category for those who have the ticking but have had no CEL indications and who have not had the problem confirmed. I will also have a category for those who definitely have a problem that has been confirmed at the dealership service department.
I have seen some with less than 5,000 miles with the tick and head issues. Maybe a choice for less than 5,000 miles should be added?

2012 JKU Sahara build date 1/2012 in Toledo, only 600 miles & no issues so far which to me should be the norm at this point. The fit & finish is excellent.

Purchased 5/1/2012
