Poll: Geographic location of Pentastar failures

So just got to thinking about these cylinder head issues and how they may be correlated to excessive heat. I have a '12 with 25k issues, a relatively early build date, and no CEL. Not sure whether I have the "tick" or just injector noise.

Anyway I live in Spokane so fairly far north, not a lot of really hot days. I thought maybe I'd do a poll to see if any trends emerge. Obviously not scientific but may turn up something interesting.

Probably just looking for people with '12s to answer the poll, I think the issue was cleared up before any 13's were built, no?

As for "colder" vs. "warmer," just use your best judgment. If you drive 60+ days a year in 90+ weather, I guess that's probably "warmer" and everything else is colder.

2012 Arctic JKU, 8900 mi, quiet, front rotors/pads replaced, waiting on front passenger seat cover replacement, won't stay tucked in underneath. Rear right passenger seat headrest bracket replaced, noisy metal on metal driving me nuts.

I live in sunny So Cal. Build date of 4/2012 and had my head replaced last month at 8000 miles. Had been ticking badly since about 2000 miles and finally had the CEL come on at 7600. Head replacement took 11 days.

I think it will take a lot of data to draw any real conclusions, but I wouldn't be that surprised to see something of a trend of more problems in warmer climates.

It took 11 days mostly because the LA warehouse was out of heads. One had to be shipped from the east coast. Didn't bother me much as I was provided a free rental car

Good for you. I've heard many have not been offered a rental. I would rather wait for the head to get their and not leave my Jeep sitting on the lot for that long. I hope I never have to go through this. I dont know how the hell a tech does a head job on a Jeep with a lift and 35's.

It's related to heat? Last I read anything about this issue, Chrysler was blaming it on bad gas and driving habits, but that sounds like BS. My perception is the motor runs hot during the warmer months and cold during the winter. The thing barely warms up on my five mile commute now.

In any event, a defective head is a defective head the moment it leaves the factory, regardless of what happens to the vehicle later on.

I have a '12 with an early build date (12/2011), only 4500 on it but so far so good.

Yeah there are quite a few places that could be considered both hot and cold, especially the midwest! What would really be nice is a "heat map" that shows concentrations of failures on a geographic basis. But that is far beyond my capabilities

Yes, cooold pretty much explains it.

Small world, I'm just a few miles outside Mankato.

I believe the date range for production of the bad heads was 8/11 to 3/12.

I wouldn't be surprised if every head (or a very high percentage of heads) manufactured for the Wrangler during this timeframe was defective.

The fact that they claim a "failure rate" of 1% means nothing, because there are tons of people with the defective heads who haven't gotten the Check Engine Light yet, may not get it any time soon, or may never get it, depending on the way they drive. Not only that, but talk to a Chrysler tech and they'll tell you about Grand Cherokees and Caravans coming in for head replacements as well.

My 2012 was produced in that time frame. It has 27K+ and I drive it like I stole it. No tick yet. At least no more tick than my 2007 3.8 with 52K miles.

the date range to potentially have the problem is actually the entire 2012 model year (minus very late july builds).

True that is. I recall reading about Pentastar Grand owners complaining about abysmal fuel economy and outside a CEL or drivability problem, its the fuel economy, IMHO, that is a significant signal of a head problem. That's what techs I've spoken to said.
