post info re: 2013 JK cracked windshields

I have seen several threads here and other places with people talking about cracked windshields on 2013 JK's.

From the pictures I have seen, the cracks are always in the same place. Passenger side about 5" up from the bottom.

Please post here only if you have experienced this issue. Please include a picture if possible.

I am just trying to document this issue and figure out is it is as big an issue as it seems.

Thanks !

Just had mine replaced due to a crack. It was on the passenger side about a foot in length starting at the bottom of the window, up about 3 - 4 inches, where it made a 90 degree turn then to the outside edge of the windshield.

Mine is a 2012.

Never had this problem on my YJ or TJ.

My dealer is currently "rejecting" mine with two random cracks. They are then trying to sell me "diamond fusion coating" on my new windshield for $695! They say that jeep windshield are too upright and thin now days so the cracking is just from rock chips. I do have one good rock chip, but it is dead center on the drivers side, so shouldn't be related to it. I didn't have a time to get into an argument with them and they aren't the dealer that I purchased from. Their only incentive seems to be get money from me instead of chrysler. $295 for new windshield and $695 for diamond coat and then they say that they will replace the windshield for free after that... I hate dealing with dealers repair shops now, nothing but headaches. The guy even joked that my windshield wasn't covered because of my lift...

I think they crack so easy is there is an unprotected edge around the full circumference of the windshield and when a small stone hits just right on the edge it causes a crack. If you look at both my cracks they both start from very small small stone hits that just caught the lower edge of the windshield. I have a few deeper stone chips that are in the center of the windshield and they have not developed into cracks. I think it has to do with the tension of the glass and the unprotected edges. I think when i replace mine when the gravel on the roads is gone I will run some clear protective tape around the edges and see if that helps.

I've got a 2013 and had a few pebbles bounce off so far, but no defects that you are describing. I'm only 1500 miles into the Jeep, they were pretty loud impacts with no chips or cracks so I'm sure it's only a matter of time until I'm not so lucky.

My main concern is that when (not if) I need to get this windshield replaced, will the grille icon above the rearview mirror be replaced as well?! Not looking to hijack the thread just hope some owners can keep the op's subject going and advise too.

A rock cracked mine about a month after purchase. They laughed when I asked if the grill and little jeep would be on the new windshield. Yes, it's still there.

Some guys are saying that theirs have cracked without any debris hitting their windshield... look up a few threads. I'm sure a cheap & thin POS windshield is more to blame than the angle.

I know a guy at work who did windshield swaps for a living, I'll ask him his opinion the next time I run into him. He still does windshields on the side as well.

Has anyone used this? Jeep Wrangler Windshield Protection Kit - ClearPlex

$695 seems a bit steep.

I had my JK less than a month before a rock put a nice star in my windshield. I ended up getting it patched for now. My deductible is more than the cost of the windshield, and I have more expensive items that I want to get for her before replacement. But I will be looking to put something like this on when I do replace it.

Just an observation... It seems like almost all if the people having that problem (crack 1/2 way up on the passenger side) have JKUs. Perhaps the longer wheel base allows more frame flex or twist that causes the windshield frame to flex just enough to crack the glass.

Mine cracked on the drivers side, similar area at 600 miles, no stone chip or impact involved. Jeep knows they got a batch of defective windshields at some point towards the end of last year and will replace them free of charge. When the dealer calls Jeep they will be permitted to perform the work under warranty.

My replacement windshield has been holding up like a champion even with it's share of normal road debris and stone impacts.

The clearplex looks preety cool, but I don't like their warranty! 1 year? So you'd probably have to replace after a couple of years.

i was not aware of Jeep knowing this...would i be able to get my 100 deductible reimbursed by jeep?

Welp, I was driving along today and a pebble flew up and hit the very egged of the windshield and CRACK! It is about 3 inches or so right at the bottom middle. Not even two weeks old!

I have a cracked windshield right now. 2013 JKU 2000 miles, a little over a month old. It's a horizontal crack starting from the passenger side edge, at about halfway up. There's no evidence of anything hitting it. I'm hoping the warranty will cover it as it's supposed to be covered for 12 months...

Driving from the dealership in my brand new 2013 JKR when i heard the rock hit the windshield. It left a good chip in there, since then i've gotten a big, long crack from the bottom edge of the windshield. Only like 3,000 miles... I'm replacing it monday though!

I don't think I have the picture any more but I also have had a cracked windshield on my 2013. It was only 4 months old and it was on the passenger side about 5" up. I had it replaced and so far so good. Insurance replaced it with OME with no out of pocket cost to me.

My dealer traced the crack with a ball point pen and said if the pen travels the entire crack smoothly and without stopping, then it's a stress crack. If it catches anywhere along the way, the assumption is the catch point is the impact crater of whatever road debris hit the windshield.

The pen caught on mine and it was not covered under warranty. I did google the pen test and found it is an accepted test for windshield cracks, so I didn't fight it.

I've been lucky when it comes to rocks hitting my windshield. I've had a couple rocks bounce off with no issues. One must have been pretty large cause it was crazy loud when it hit. I've got an '08. Perhaps the windshields were stronger then or made by a different supplier.

I'm on my third windshield in four months with the 2013. Both of my windshield cracked on the driver side, very small rocks.

I had a pin point divot at the edge and it was also denied you could barely see it but I am sure it would have been felt on the pen test. It would not have mattered a couple days later a bigger rock put another crack in the shield and it was a divot that noticible.

Maybe its just me but a little rock chip wouldn't cause me to replace a window. Its a square box and if you drive them enough you'll get chips. I've had to replace 2 in the last 16 years due to a crack running the whole length.
