Power upgrades?

A blessed noob humbly requests your advice...

My brother-in-law's affection for his '00 Wrangler has infected me. Yesterday drove an '07 Unlimited (4-door). I'm considering one because, for my purposes, it's about as close to perfect as any current 4-wheel vehicle... except for power (more on this below).

First I wanted to confirm whether or not '07 is the first year for this body, which apparently has far larger dimensions vs. earlier Wrangler 4-doors.

Now, back to the power issue...I'd like more (surprise). OEM Torque is adequate but I'd happily welcome more torque too if it arrived w/ the much-desired hp increase. I know anything is possible for a price. The dealer mentioned one customer swapped cams & injectors, but he didn't know prices or hp increase.

OEM hp/tq is 202/237. What specific mods would reliably increase hp about 10-15% (20-30hp)? I'm guessing this would be all I need to move into the full-desire mode. Approxmiate cost for materials (& number of hours for professional installation) for the above upgrades?

I would probably NOT accept less reliability, or an increase in noise or fuel consumption w/ moderate use of the loud pedal. I imagine the OEM motor warranty would be officially void unless the local dealer made a special accomodation? (The local dealer may be open to such an accomodation.)

Thanks all for your consideration.

Some of the new generation wrangler experts may have to chime in on this one, but the question I have is, "what are you looking for your wrangler to do?" It is not a road vehicle like a bmw or even an accord. Power in a wrangler is for torque and offroading. If you want a daily driver with great gas mileage and street performance, a wrangler is probably not what you need. If you like to go places others can't and have a great time doing it, then go for the wrangler.

BTW welcome to the forum. We love ALL jeepers!!!

There are probably several thousand miles of scenic trails I'd love to explore near my location in Cache Valley, north UT. Another thing I like is that I fit well in it, which is rare. Uncomfortable fit has eliminated many other vehicles from my wish list. For instance, I'm not that hot for the Grand Cherokee but if I was it wouldn't matter, because the windshield is way too short for me. I won't be using the Unlimited for long commutes. With all due respect, & I truly mean that, my impression is that the '07 Unlimited I drove would make a decent daily driver for me, though its ride would of course be harsher than probably any current midsize sedan, as you well point out above. This is 1000% personal & I fully respect opposite opinions. My understanding is the
'07 is quieter & smoother than the earlier model years.

Regarding the Unlimited's hp, my goal is to more closely approximate the acceleration of another vehicle I often drive. That vehicle isn't a rocket ship, but scoots quicker than the Unlimited.

regards,
jimbo

The only mods I know of are intake, exhaust and superchargers. There might be computer programmers but I donno what kind of performance numbers any of them are making.

Yeah, I've been searching on the net. Haven't come across the blowers yet but at least a couple places selling all the usual suspects, i.e. cold-air intakes, exhaust (noise makers), etc...Naive consumers often confuse noise increases w/ power increases.

I'm suspicious of the filtering action of the reusuable filters. And most of the power claims I read sound generally like a bunch of hot air. It's not hard to imagine a torque increase of 24 lb-ft when one motor has 85 octane & the other is tuned for race fuel...

Well, from what I have experienced and seen on the Forum, Jeeps are made for a specific category of uses. They are perhaps the most capable off road machines engineered and produced today. What you give up in acceleration and top end power is made up for in torque and manuverability. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to have both. There are some things you can do to improve horsepower and performance, but the costs usually outweigh the gains. Once again, I feel you need to weigh what you want out of the vehicle and then make sure it meets your needs.

And yes, the new generation wranglers are much more adapted to "creature comforts" than previous models.

Well, this is something i found on another forum:

Quote:
The results are in.. I’ll keep this as short and sweet as I can..
Test and configurations were made to my 2007 Jeep Wrangler 4D Rubicon..
1st. Dyno run
Bone Stock = 198.7hp / 231.3tq

First we installed a Magna Flow True Dual Exhaust system keeping the stock catalytic converts in place..
2nd. Dyno run
Dual Exhaust System = 212.3hp / 241.1tq

Then we removed the dual system and re-installed the 2 into 1 collector and just ran a single back to a Magna Flow 6” x 18” muffler and then straight back..
3rd. Dyno run
Single Exhaust System = 213.8hp / 246.8tq

Obviously the Single System yielded much better results.. That is what stayed on.. And let me tell you the Sound is awesome..

Now the easy stuff AEM Brute Force Intake System.. Very Clean install..
4th. Dyno run
Single Exhaust System with AEM intake = 220.1hp / 250.7tq

Last but not least.. We installed the Jet Performance Stage II chip.. My initial thought process on this one was I wasted my money.. But the Dyno tell the truth..

5th Dyno run
Single Exhaust with AEM intake and Jet Performance Stage II chip

Final Results = 231.9hp / 258.8tq
Overall Gains = 33.2 HP / 27.5 TQ

Maybe to some this was a big waste of time but what the heck free use of a dyno and some spare time and some great Manufacture support.. Take these results as you may..
I will work on getting some pictures up on the exhaust relocation and intake install…I will also work on getting the dyno slips posted up.. Thanks Jay
Hope this helps you.

I believe that now that this engine is in a rear drive style platform we will see more performance parts.......Banks/Gibson are making headers .......Honestly Crane will grind a cam for anything if ya jave the money.....they milled one for my Mini Stock Ford years ago to my spec for 300 bucks

That being said the usual performance practices will yeild power.......cleaning up the heads , smoothing the lower intake tracks, portmatching them to the heads, and milling the heads to increase compression would yeild signifigant gains as well.......a nice Low end grind cam would be sweet......theres an easy 300 Ft Lbs in this motor with the above mods and a good cam...IMO

to answer your first question. 07 is the first model year for the JK, there was no 4dr in the TJ only and extended version. the JK is one hell of an improvement over the TJ.. the TJ guys will tell you differently though cause they don't have one yet.. give them time..

Power issues: with more power would come more responsibility, like stated above, this is not a race car. It has more than enough power to get you above the speed limit and get you out of the mud on the same day. The tow rating is sad but it is a short wheelbase vehicle so even with more power towing wouldn't really go up...

gas mileage.. its a shoe box on wheels the only time to mention gas mileage and a wrangler in the same sentence is to say how bad the gas mileage is...

other than that.. get it you will like it
