Premium Sunrider vs plain Sunrider vs hardtop

My understanding is that the premium is a 3x and the standard is only 1x. Saw the difference at a dealer and was impressed with the new top. However, due to wife, I have security and wind noise concerns with the soft top. Don't get me wrong, on a test drive on a '12 Sahara, the Sunrider was much better then TJ, YJ, or CJ soft tops.

Has anyone actually had the chance to drive a JKU with the Sunrider and then a JKU with the Premium Sunrider yet?? Is there a big difference in sound isolation from the standard version? Frankly, the leak posts I'm seeing in the hard tops have me rethinking the hardtop. & the money saved would help with mods.

I have a 12 with a Sunrider top. It is suprisingly quiet even at highway speeds. I do hear other "louder"cars/trucks when they are near. Even at 75mph you can use the hands free option for your cell phone with no problem hearing or being heard by callers.

I can only imagine that a top with a liner would be more quiet. Aren't they also offering some kind of spring system to assist with putting the unlimited top up & down?

Yep. There is a spring system for 2013. Not sure it was needed.

Have you taken down and put up a 2012 or prior JKU soft top? Even the video instructions recommends a second pair of hands. I can do it myself now but it is a bit of a pain. The "assitance" spring system(?) may make this task easier.

i got a 2013 Unlimited Sahara with dual tops and have had it for a week. I have driven it to work 50 miles away with 30 of that on a very busy highway. With the dual top option you automaticly get the premium soft top. It does not seam any noisier than driving in my Wife Avalanche or any noisier than when the hard top was on. I live in the Northeast so I wanted a hard top for the Winter and storage is not a problem for me when either top is not being used.

I had originally thought about a hard top. But, I think the premium soft top may give me what I wanted in the hard top. Being in MD, we don't get a lot of harsh weather.

Test drove a '13 Sport w/ premium soft top today. Screw getting a hard top. Just a tad noisier on interstate and she same noise around town as the hard top. Very impressed with the premium soft top.

Is the premium top 2 door too or 4 door only?

Interesting. I will tell my brother this when he gets his. Wish they had this option for 2012.

I'm there will also be a chunk of the new premium soft tops hitting craigslist soon enough - there will be plenty of folks that get the dual top option (for whatever reason) and end up selling the soft top.

I also can't wait for the following threads to show up:
"Will the 2013 Premium Soft Top fit my <<insert 2007-2012 JK/U here>>?"

"I have a 2013 with the hard top, will the <<insert 2007-2012 JK/U soft top option>> fit my JK/U?"

"My 2013 Premium soft top leaks!"

Doubt that VERY much !
More like ALOT of hard tops being sold because
they LOVE the new premium soft tops and won't
be putting the hard top back on. I was not even
looking into getting the Dual Top option on a 2012
when I first looked at Jeeps back in April. Then
thanks to the guys in the sticky post about the 2013's
talking about the new tops I changed my mind.
I am so frigging happy I waited for a 2013
I have been driving home almost everyday up Rt.128
the 50 miles home with it the 1/2 way open position.
I'd put it all the way down but don't want to spend
the time zippering out the windows only to put them
back in when I get home.

I ordered my new 2013 with the hard top. I figured it would be better in the long run getting the hard top first, money wise. If I decide later I want a soft top, it's much cheaper buying that aftermarket than say a hard top. I do live in the Northeast part of the country so I wanted the hard top for winter.

Just my $.02

I'm looking at ordering with the hard top and getting the Trektop NX. It saves about $600. However with soft tops in general, how big of a deal is it to swap tops. Specifically how much of the soft top hardware has to be removed?

Check out the owners manual (see the owners section of the Jeep web site). The detailed steps are in there. It doesn't look to be too cumbersome.

I have the standard soft top on my 12 and it is pretty good. Only issue is raising the soft top by yourself with a spidershade installed, can be a biatch! I still am glad I have a hard top for winter as I think it will double the life of the soft top. The hard top does also offer more security which will always be lacking with the soft top. The rear cargo area is also a lot more accessible with the flip up rear window. I am glad to have both tops!

I have a '12 JK with the sunrider. I really don't find it to be too loud at all. At highway speeds, the car is a little noisy, but it's not anything to write home about.

My reasoning for the soft top over the hard top is this: if you want to remove the top, you need a place to keep the hard top whereas the soft top just folds nicely in the back.

I am quite curious to see how the 3-ply premium top is. It may be justifiable if it's noticeably quieter.

Not to hijack but I'm thinking the exact same thing for the 2013 Rubicon wheels. I'd bet it's going to be a lot easier to get rid of moabs on CL.

Are all the soft tops in the new 2013 Wrangler Unlimiteds sold with the Premium Soft Tops if so optioned? I have been to two different dealerships in two days, and they have been having difficulty ascertaining if the Premium Soft Top is currently available, one saying the code is the same as last year's soft top (so is it the same top as last year and not the new one?) I am ordering the Dual Top Group and am hoping for the Premium and would be dismayed if I did not end up with it.

If you order the Dual Top Group, the Premium Soft Top is included. If you have only the soft top Jeep build, as in my case, you must pay to upgrade to the Premium Soft Top if you want it. That's what I did. I paid to upgrade from the regular soft top to the Premium.

Getting the Premium top with the dual top package is good. I am not sure it is worth a $400 upgrade from the standard to a premium top though. For that kind of money it will pay for your next replacement of the standard top (fabric).

I am still a bit confused... maybe I just missed the answer in here.

Without the Premium option, do you still get the SunRider (targa top kinda thing) setup that allows you to open only over the front seats?

Or is that function only on the Premium top?

Both tops do that.

2-door or Unlimited?

I just did a cursory Craigslist search and I found Unlimited soft tops (non-Premium mind you) in the $600-$800 range. I'd imagine 2-door soft tops will be a couple hundred cheaper.

Doesn't matter how many layers of material they use, access to the cargo area on the JKU is still going to S U C K. For that reason alone I wish I had gotten the hard top...then picked up a soft top used from a member later on.

What do you mean by access to the cargo area sucking?

I mean you have to unzip it, pull the bar out of the bracket, and push the vinyl out of the way, rather than just flip up the glass like the hard top. Hard top is so nice if you load things in the Jeep often.

I just received my 2013 Sport that we special ordered and I wasn't given any option for a premium top. It looks to me I have a single layer sunrider top. I have not put the top all the way down yet (only opened in sunrider position). Are the assist springs on all soft tops?
