I am looking into lifting my JK and turning it into a capable off-roader that I can use as my daily driver for about 6 more years until i retire it for just weekend use. My original plan was to keep the suspension stock until I needed to replace the stock tires (I got it used last January w/ only 16000 miles) but after spending a good chunk of my summer on the trails, I quickly realized that I needed to upgrade sooner than I expected.
The kits I am looking at are:
The Pro Comp 4" stage 1 kit w/ ES9000 shocks (coil lift front and rear.)
RK 2.5" stock mod lift (no shocks)
TeraFlex 2.5" coil lift (w/ shock extenders or new shocks altogether)
I like the idea of going to a 4" kit that will be sufficient for almost all of my off-road needs (and look good too), but I have seen mixed reviews on the quality of Pro Comp products. Can any of you guys make a recommendation? I plan on putting 34" tires on whatever I get, so I know that 4" isn't necessary, but given the prices and whats included in each kit, what would y'all recommend?
Lose the Pro Comp. Don't need 4" unless you plan on spending a pile for adj control arms and tb's, new driveshafts, etc. Even if you need a bigger lift for rock crawling, there are better out there.
Take a look at MarineHawk's profile...he went with the Pro Comp, and spent the next several months returning his rig to acceptable driveability.
golferguy, I got your PM. There is simply no cheap way to do a 4" lift that will not ruin your ride. I don't know exactly where the line is, but you apparently can lift at least up to 2.5" without spending several thousand dollars correcting the altered geometry of everything, especially on the front end. The PC 4" lift has cheap-to-manufacture non-adjustable parts (trackbar, LCAs, etc ...) that makes it less-expensive than a properly-designed 4" lift, but prevents you from properly aligning your front end (ends up with too low of a caster angle). When I had the non-adjustable PC components on (even when aligned as well as possible), the Jeep drove like Hell, even to the point that the traction-control thingy would activate when I would go over bumps on the highway. It just wasn't fun to drive. Now, with the right (fairly-expensive) components, it drives like a dream.
Whatever you get, you either want to stay fairly low, or get good adjustable components. You also will need a new DS if you go above 3" or so.
If I could go back in time, I would have either lifted mine 2.5" or I would have gone with a Synergy 4" lift (or something comparable) from the start.
Go with the RK 2.5 stock mod with some good shocks. Do not go above 3" unless you want to toss a ton more cash at it to do it right. Also Pro Comp is sub par stuff.
Thanks. I've seen great reviews of RK lifts, so I will definitely consider going for it. Do you know anything about the ARB 3" coil kit? Would that require a bunch of new equipment outside of the basic components of the kit? Once I add the shocks to the RK kit they will be about the same price, so is the quality of RK worth giving up that extra half inch?
I never could understand the Pro Comp bash. I have this lift and it's been on now for close to a yr now. With in that time I've had ZERO problems with my jeep. The jeep is a 2011 JKUR w/ 35's. I do not have the ES9000 but the MX6 shocks.
It drives great. No vibrations, it goes down the road in a streight line. No pull in any direction or anything else. And no, I have not lost any height from the springs. Maybe the ones with problems already had a problem with the jeep and it did not show up until you put the lift on. Or I'm just one of the lucky ones.
There is nothing wrong with Pro Comp at all. Four Wheel parts did my 2.5 Teraflex lift and i nearly went with Pro Comp but decided on Teraflex. The bashing of Pro Comp is just like a lot of other things you read on this forum and others, just a bunch of internet gossip and rambling.

Every jeep is different. Play nice. An advertised 4" lift by some companies such as procomp, are clearly not 4", either way its his lift and hes happy. It really isnt until one has experience with multiple lift brands that one realizes a difference.
