Program used key fob?

I have 2 workings keys/key fobs. But I have a problem loosing keys or locking my keys in my Jeep. So I picked up a used key/key fob from eBay. So, with that said, I need to prorgram only the key fob to lock/unlock keyless. Can I do this myself? Obviously the already cut key is uselss to me I just got it for the keyless entry fob...

i lost a key to mine...the stealership wanted 107 for the key + tax and 75 + tax to program it....yes it was texas dodge in amarillo texas!!!!! i pretty much told them what i thought about that and hung up. Ace hardware can actually program them for you...which i guess if they can do it i can do it i dunno but long story short they charged me 80 for key and all tax included....so from 197 down to 80 pretty much saved 120$ ....be aware that if you look there might be a cheaper way...my key dont say jeep but who cares.

Customer Key Programming
If you have two valid Sentry Keys, you can program
new Sentry Keys to the system by performing the
following procedure:

1. Cut the additional Sentry Key Transponder blank(s)
to match the ignition switch lock cylinder key code.

2. Insert the first valid key into the ignition switch. Turn
the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position for at least
three seconds, but no longer than 15 seconds. Then, turn
the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the
first key.

3. Insert the second valid key into the ignition switch.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position within
15 seconds. After 10 seconds, a chime will sound. In
addition, the Vehicle Security Light will begin to flash.
Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and
remove the second key.

4. Insert a blank Sentry Key into the ignition switch.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position within
60 seconds. After 10 seconds, a single chime will sound.
In addition, the Vehicle Security Light will stop flashing.
To indicate that programming is complete, the Vehicle
Security Light will turn on again for three seconds and
then turn off.

The new Sentry Key is programmed. The Remote
Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter will also be programmed
during this procedure.

Well, you can buy an empty blank key for 10 bucks have t cut and try using the internals of the used key. If you can wait a day or so, I'll try it with my old key and a blank I have. I do remember reading somewhere that a programmed key can't be reprogrammed, but I'mm give it a shot anyways.

In either case, to program the key fob, you'll need a working key, that you can turn in the ignition.

Ok. Thanks guys. I know the sentry key, once programmed, can not be re-programmed. but the keyless transmitter should be able to. i will order a blank and see.

Blastek,

Sounds like this procedure requires two "Valid" keys for this to work... What if you only have one?

That is true. You most likely have to go to a dealer, but check your local locksmith first to see if they have the proper equipment. I generally like to buy a spare key to program as a "valid" key when I get a new car, that way if you lose one, you still have 2 "valid" keys.

I just got off the phone with a local locksmith. He quoted me $149.00. I laughed and hung up. I'll try ACE HW next...
