May have my boat sold soon so I am starting to look hard at Tire and Wheel combinations. I am just about sold on the Goodyear DTs. They look great and have ready more good than bad about them. Here is the question, I hear many people getting wheel sizes from 15 to 20 inches on their rigs but really don't understand why other than tire selections. I know it has to have something to do with the amount of sidewall but would like to hear the pros and cons.
Here are my limitations:
Max tire Height 33”
Max Lift 2.5” if needed
This due to my wife is no longer able to crawl up in anything taller. So to keep her happy and off-roading with me that’s the limit. Now we don’t do rock crawling or other extreme off road maneuvers. We do the jeep trails in NM and CO and some of them have some crazy spots but slow and easy can almost always overcome. At least that is what my father in law always said. He did extensive four wheeling with the family in a stock 65 CJ. All he had was a winch and jack and never had any trouble.
The more sidewall you have the better the tire will conform to trail features. The less sidewall you have the more responsive and stable the vehicle will perform on the road. As you gain one, you will lose a bit of the other. I knew our driving would not involve lots of trail use and that had a lot to do with my choice to stick with 17's. I would not go any larger than that unless I wanted to run a very tall tire. The added cost is not worth.....well.....anything.

The smaller the wheel the less chance you have of scratching and scuffing when offroading. We dinged up our 17" black wheels last offroad trip which was the only downside to our trip. There were many rocks and boulders and we were taking them slow and still sustained damage. I hope to aleviate this problem by installing larger tires.
I am going to a 16 inch rim and 33 x 12.5 inch tire. From what I understand the Goodyear DT is currently backordered nationally. Decided to go with an All Terain BFG as they were available, and I have read comparable reviews on this forum. I am also going with a 2.5 inch lift. Even with no lift I have been told the 33s will be fine on the 12 Sahara. With the lift I am prepared when I am bitten by the 35 inch bug.

Cool set up but not sure if it will work for us. The wife was in a bad wreck a few years back and now has knee and ankle problems in both legs and her left wrist has two plates and a bunch of screws holding it together. We use a simular set up to get her ito our 99Ram PU but it has mor grab handles. Been thinking of getting that power running board. It looks like it drops enough and then tucks up nice and neat.
33's on 17's will fit nicely with a 2 - 2.5in lift. No lift they will still fit but you will need to add bump stop extensions of an inch or so minimum to stop them rubbing at full compression.
We are stuck with minimum 17in rims down here as for some reason we got larger front brakes from 2010 onwards that I notice you guys still dont get even on the 2012 models (by larger I mean we get 13in front discs instead of the 11.5 or thereabouts you have).
