Purchasing 2009 Jeep Wrangler X, some advice please?

Hey guys

I am finalizing a deal with a dealership that is 300 miles away. Given this, I will be unable to test drive it. I have pictures of the underbody coming, but I do not think anything is out of the ordinary, as it has a lifetime powertrain warranty for free, supplied by dealership.

Here is the link:
2009 Jeep Wrangler X Vernon, Texas | Vernon Auto Group

Basically, I am just looking for some help, as this will be my FIRST Jeep

What are things I should ask the dealer? Anything I should look out for?
Is there any part (such as transmission or suspension, etc) I should inquire about in terms of working condition?

Now, if this is indeed as good as a deal as it seems, I have set aside additional funds to modify it.
Basically, I am planning to get a set of 17x8.5 aftermarket black wheels and some 265 A/T tires. Can this create any possible risks in the future (for instance, I put 8.5" wide wheels on my current Escape, and it caused the bearings to wear out within 1k miles, as well as require suspension repairs...) in terms of the drivetrain or other parts? How much will my fuel economy lower?

Also, I am planning on upgrading the speaker system by installing a touch screen stereo and shallow sub/amp in the trunk.

Should I get anything else before these mods rather than this? Thank you so much!

Well, I would not buy anything without the ability to drive it. Pictures and words from that site do look nice, but I've also seen airbrushed Magazine covers. That's just me. For one, see if they will let you take it for a few hours and contact a local trusted mechanic and pay him to give it a mini inspection if you don't know what to look for. I know when I was looking at my used 08, even it being a certified 1 Pre owned, I still was able to take it home overnight. I got to drive it to our mechanic to look at it and have him give me the " this is good " nod of approval. Heck, see if you have a friend close that can do it for you if you are not able to get it to an outside set of eyes not trying to sell a car.

You need to lift up the carpet, check for rust around the seats to see if it was ever soaked out, get on your back and look for anything insanely corroded, etc.

And I'd get that lifetime warranty they have on the page clarified, as in do you have to buy the warranty and have it serviced ONLY at their shop, etc.

Good luck, jeeps are awesome. But don't let that cloud your decision. Make sure you do your homework. The Internet is a great place for porn, sports scores, conspiracy theories, and memes galore like the I Love Cats eharmony lady (google it, it's hysterical...) but buying a vehicle regardless of the distance is something that should be done in person if it is used. I don't trust internet purchases unless I can get behind the wheel and kick the proverbial tires.

Either way, keep us posted!

Let me give you tips!

NEVER BUY WITHOUT PHYSICALLY looking at it & driving it. You can buy it like you are doing if you want to chance it. But I would highly recommend going there to check it out if you want it. Or find something a lot closer.

Dealers or 3rd party places do not do anything to the vehicles really. They'll change the oil & have it detail. If it's a dealer. Depending on how bad it is. They'll replace the tires, brake pads, maybe air filter. Have noticeable damages fix. No other fluids are done & no other parts are replace if it don't look to bad. Even if the seals for the engine/transmission is leaking. They'll have detail clean it up.

Don't rely on what the description says. If you can't be there to check it out your self or have someone you trust to inspect it for you. I wouldn't bother.

Because, underneath all that glossy shining shine. It could be a piece of junk. And places will try to hide what they can just to sell it to you.

Thanks man. I really don't know if I can sacrifice 6 hours to go and see it though. I am still in school pursuing my engineering degree, and my priorities lay there with making sure I study as much as possible. I have received pictures of literally everything (seems as though underbody has either been rhino-lined or treated with rustoleum black paint x 100 coats). So, at this stage, I was thinking of calling the local mechanics in that area and requesting for a master technician to go there, test drive it, and take a look at her at the shop. I don't mind spending the 100 or 200 to ensure that a master technician gives me the nod of approval...especially since I don't see my schedule opening up anytime soon to be able to warrant a 350mi road trip to see it myself, when I honestly don't know that much about the ins and outs of the transmission and engine...what do you think?

First, good color choice. Second, I wouldn't buy any vehicle without driving it. Third, You can try and get it looked at by another mechanic, but that may not be definitive.

I am assuming you are driving up there from College Station. Is this correct?

I didn't even see the price. But I still wouldn't do that. You may not know a lot of about cars. But you still want to see it your self & be there with the tech to look over it so he can tell you what's good & bad while looking at it. Look for something closer, much much closer to you.

If you want a 2 door model. They start around 22-24,000. I didn't buy a use one because all of them were close enough to a new one so I just got a new vehicle instead. They hold their value. So take your time & think everything over.

All great advice..^^ I also agree that "end of year" deals make it possible to get a new JK for very near the price of used.

There are plenty of JK's out there, take your time....

why is it so expensive?

Its an X.

I think you can find a better deal. Seriously, I got my Rubicon unlimited fully loaded for $22,500.

Location is huge with wrangler pricing.
Also mileage.

22.500 is great for a JKUR

I paid the $22,000 for a 2 door 07 Rubicon in CT. Best I could find, I looked for almost a year for a used Rubi and all were in the $25-27,000 range, its unbelievable. At the dealership it was a 2011 basic sport or the 07 for the same dam price. Rubi had low mileage so I went with it, most would by new
