Purchasing my First JKU

A Repost from the new members thread, figured you guys could give me better insight with reference to post here. PM for Links to each jeep!

I just recently graduated from University and landed a full time gig in Cincinnati, OH. I've been ready to dump my Infiniti I35 and land myself a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Being nowhere near familiar with Jeeps besides always wanting one, I've been lurking sites the best 3-4 months reading as much as possible to inform myself. I've found at least two from dealers that I have deemed in my price range and features I want.
Hard Top
Black/Green/Blue/Silver/Tan
Foot Rails
4 Door

Both are used JKU 2008 and JKU 2010 Sahara Editions. One is black and one is green. The are both within the 42,000-52,000 mile range. I am just hoping to gain some information when visiting the dealerships and looking at these Jeeps for anything I need to look at when preparing to purchase my first Jeep!

I've never purchased a car on my own and any insight/lime light would be wonderful as you guys really seem like a family/tight knit group here.

Some 08 JK's have oil consumption issues. Personally, I would avoid them. The 2010 JK 4 door would be a better choice. Come to the table armed with NADA book value information.

Hey revolver. I have no idea what your budget is, and I don't need to of course. Jeeps seem to hold their value pretty well and if you're buying used from a dealer you're probably pretty close to what a new Sport would run.

If at all possible, I would add to your list that it be a 2012 or newer (Pentastar motor, much better), and have 3.73 gears.

Again, your $$$ is your business, but if you're financing and the difference isn't that much per month, then see if you can swing a newer or brand new one.

You can bolt all kinds of aftermarket stuff to a Sport as well as anything else, as long as the drivetrain is good.

Unless you just find "The One", lol. Then just go get it and enjoy.

Edit: Join "Tread Lightly" and go in with the paperwork to START your negotiations at 1% under INVOICE. If you're new to this stuff, you can take 3-4 thousand off the window sticker. Don't be number shocked or trampled by the dealerships. It doesnt have to be a battle. Get your Affiliate code and ask them if they honor it, if not say Thanks and go to a different dealer.

There's a dealer on the forums named Pat Fields that I think does alot of business in the midwest. You can PM him for some straight answers.

I would go with the 2010 as it seems with any vehicle the 1st and 2nd years are when the majority of problems arise. They usually have it all ironed out by the 3rd year model.

Anyways, as you probably already know. The 2011 has the new interior and the 2012 has the new engine. I would honestly look for a 2012 that has had the engine work done and look into a extended warranty.

Does anyone know why a dealer would take 2-4k off the window sticker from the beginning? When I bought my 2014 the dealer had it listed for 4k under the sticker price. That's where we started negotiations.

Thanks for the advice guys. Both vehicles look like they are coming out of Ontario from Commercial Grade vehicles. I'll be financing whatever Jeep WU I purchase in the next 1-2 months unless I win a big Lotto!

I'll throw the links in.

In Vegas almost every sticker is MSRP or very close too. If it's something they know they can move, they'll add on an "adjustment".

When the Challenger SRT8's came out a couple years ago, it was MSRP plus about $12 THOUSAND extra just because there was high demand.

Well I've found 2 different 2012 Sahara Unlimited Black under 35k Miles. I understand I could probably purchase a new one, but all I really want is the pentastar engine after reading some of the other threads here!

Thanks boys!

Welcome to the board Revolver...the nice thing about the Cincy area is that you have a corridor of population that seems to generate a lot of buying choices and dealerships.

Don't be concerned if you have to drive as far as North Dayton to get a variety of choices. Most dealers are close to freeway entrances and if you're willing to drive an hour, you can find used if you like or a good dealer you trust to get new.

Have you looked at Zimmer Chrysler/Jeep in Florence? We bought a new 2012 Liberty for my wife last year, we were treated very well, they were wiling to negotiate and had a great interest rate.
