Put the 8 spd transmission worries to rest - it handles a Bentley's 700lbs of torque

So apparently the 2014 Wrangler will share a transmission with a Bentley and a Nav with a Ferrari.

Well, the Bentley version handles that much but that's not the same one the wrangler will get. The internals are application specific. I just hope they get it right. I would think so, but time will tell.

That's like saying Coach and First class travel in an airplane are the same.

They may both accomplish the same purpose but it definitely doesn't happen in the same way.

Whatever they're using, its better than when Chrysler tried making their own transmissions. I think they made them out of cardboard and Bondo.

We have a fleet of 64 trucks where I work (a mix of pickups and vans), and Dodge is still on the "do not buy" list because they wouldn't make it through the basic guideline of 10 years/120,000 miles without transmission failures.

IIRC ZF also makes trans for BMW. The current Mercedes trans aren't bullet proof, there have been some failures, especially in SRT's. Chrysler has made some great trans, especially the TF727.

Its unfortunate that whomever makes such a list where you work is ignorant of facts.

It's funny how the internet works. If a company makes say 300,000 vehicles and 5000 of them have transmission problems, 3000 of those owners end up crying about it online and then all of a sudden "that company builds vehicles with crappy transmissions" becomes gospel.

A variation of the Wrangler's 3.6L is the Ferrari built 400+HP 3L V6 Twin Turbo found in the 2014 Maserati Ghibli - New Maserati Ghibli Official Website

The Ghibli also has the ZF 8 speed tranny - ZF 8HP transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Just imagine the Wrangler with the Ghibli's motor and trans

It was based on company experience. We didn't have one late 90's/early 2000's Dodge make it past 80k without a transmission or rear failure. I think its no coincidence Dodge abandoned the van market and just stuck their name on a Sprinter. Next year they're sticking it on the Ducato -a Fiat van.

We've been getting E250's. Ford is totally changing the Econoline next year. Its going to be a hightop like the Sprinter so it will probably be Chevy van's for the near future. We buy about 11 per year.

Commercial vehicles take a beating compared to most everyday drivers, I understand why a company would switch what they buy if something breaks, however, any company should keep reviewing what's out there. Just because they bought a bad batch in the 90's doesn't mean it's still a bad product. I hate to say it, but the best years for the Wrangler may be 2003-2004 based on what I've seen in defects and problems. I am really liking my 2013, but I wonder if Jeep is going down the tubes too.

Long time mopar fan.Everything in my driveway for the past 20 years asides from my sons Firebird has been Chrysler,Dodge ,Jeep. Their auto transmissions earned and deserve their reputation .Like someone said cardboard and bondo. I almost fell out of my chair laughing because it is true.Its also why all of my Jeeps have always been standards until this 13. The new 12+ auto is the first one I have been happy with period.

2004 I think was the last year for Dodge anything. The Fords and Chevy's make it past the guidelines with relative ease. Warping plastic intakes are one of the weak spots on the Fords, because the coolant leak immediately pools in the plug well and leads to a misfire. That happens to about 1 in 10 of the E250's. Its a $600 fix vs. 3k+ for an overdrive trans.

If you get screwed over by a vehicle brand 5 or 6 times, you don't try it a few years later to see if it still sucks. They're 30 grand a piece.

Great news if its true. I have the ZF 8 speed in my BMW and its the best torque converter auto I've ever driven. Its so fast you would swear its a dual clutch, but its still smooth like a normal auto. Power in every gear since there are so many, and its awesome for fuel economy. Obviously the wrangler application will be geared and programmed different, but its a seriously impressive trans. I'm manual fan but would take the ZF 24/7 over a stick now.

2013 BMW 328i in addition to the 2013 JKR as well. I agree with this statement... The 8 speed in the BMW is awesome!!Not to mention the twin turbos....
