Question about 2013 Alarm

I have a 2013 Sahara I ordered from local dealer. An alarm was not an option that I had. Looking in the manual, it seems I might have an alarm but not sure if I do or not. Can you tell me if it is/was standard in the 2013s?

Close the door...lock it by pressing the button on the key fob. If there is a little red light blinking on the right side of the instument cluster, you have an alarm.

I will check that. Take it that it was not standard in 2013s? I want to know whether it was an option I missed? Or I should have it and dont (that is if I don't...I dont remember seeing blinking light but will check).

It's pretty much standard on every model with keyless entry. In the owners manual it tells you how it works. You did call and get your free owners manual, right?

The factory alarm was not an option on the Sahara because it comes standard with it.

I checked at lunch, and I do have the blinking light, so guess I have it. Nice! What triggers it? doors opening while it is armed?

Yes, if you lock the Jeep with the key fob, then the alarm will sound anytime the doors are opened unless you use the key fob.

In other words, if somebody breaks in, or just reaches in when the windows are down and opens the door, the alarm will go off until you show up with the key.

My owners manual also says that if you engage the locks with the power door lock switch while the door is open it will set the alarm. Pg. 20 in the manual.

The Vehicle Security Alarm will set when you use the
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter to lock the doors
and swing gate, or when you use the power door lock
switch while the door is open. After all the doors are
locked and closed, the Vehicle Security Light (located on
the instrument cluster) will flash rapidly for about 16
seconds to signal that the Vehicle Security Alarm is
arming. During this 16-second arming period, opening
any door or the swing gate will cancel the arming. If the
Vehicle Security Alarm is successfully set, the Vehicle
Security Light will flash at a slower rate to indicate the
Vehicle Security Alarm is armed.

Slightly off-topic but as a surfer I'd like to have a key that doesn't have all the electronics in it to put in my wetsuit pocket. Is there a way to just get a plain key made? Sounds like no if it needs a chip to start and if yes does locking the door AFTER it's shut also arm the alarm? Would rather not have to hide the key somewhere outside on the Jeep while I'm in the water.

you can get a key normal key made with out the chip. It will unlock the doors but will not start the jeep(at least not for very long) so you can keep the chiped key under the seat or something.

Go over to Sport Chalet into the diving area and look at their options for waterproof bags/containers. I'm sure they have something small that wouldn't be too uncomfortable (any more than a key in your wetsuit would be). Or get a magnetic key holder that you can stick somewhere under the body out of sight.

What he said. I have a regular skinny key in my wallet for each of my vehicles in case I accidentally lock the main key inside. Any place that makes keys can cut one for you. The alarm will sound though if you unlock the door with the non-chipped key. But...why can't you just have Gidget hold the key for you?
