question about pricing on the window sticker

So I've looked at hundreds of window stickers the last couple weeks as I try to decide on a Jeep and look for the right deal. Something odd I've noticed, on the connectivity group, sometimes the price is $380, and sometimes its only $60 (on the window sticker). Same thing for remote start, on some of the JKU's its $200 (most of them), but lately I've started seeing $500 for remote start (particularly on the Altitudes). What gives?

I'm trying to decide between a black or black-forest-green JKU. Anybody have any opinions on that? Also, I want the 430N instead of the 730N because i've heard such horror stories about the 730. Some dealers are trying to sell their wranglers at sticker (I even saw one dealer who had added a $2000 markup??). But then there are a couple dealers with HUGE discounts (5k off sticker), pricing it way below dealer cost. None of these steep discounts is exactly what i want, but for that kind of discount maybe i should jump on it?

Stop looking at sticker prices. Start negotiating from invoice price.

They keep raising the price on them. Looked at one built in November and destination charge was $800 newer ones its like $950 now. Same thing for base price -it went up along with prices of certain options.

Are they actually offering you those discounts or are they just "available" discounts. My dealer told me they use those to bait you in but ypu wont qualify for most of them. Like others have said. Start at invoice. Go to Edmunds.com and put in the exact vehicle you are looking at. It will give you MSRP, Invoice, and what they think you should pay. Which will be lower than invoice. Then negotiate down from there

All the jeep dealers around here discount all the jeeps anywhere from 2-5k. They don't tell people this when they walk in though. At least they didn't for me. I found out their discount price from their website. I would imagine all the jeep dealers do this. I would shop around online first and go from there. All dealers will match others prices.

And yes to OP ... Go by the invoice prices !
Also try TrueCar.com for pricing, it has some good info also.
Then do your own search using the Jeep.Com build option and
set it for whatever miles from your Zipcode.
Many, many Dealers list all kinds of discounts KNOWING that only
maybe 15% of the people will qualify for SOME of them and only
5% MAY qualify for all of it.

So my company has the Chrysler program where it's 1% below invoice. But should I realistically be able to get one cheaper than that?

Why bother?

Some dealers will give a full 2% under invoice without any fuss. But, to me, the real value of the Chrysler Affiliate program is the absolutely no hassle deal for you and for the dealer. Everybody wins - your getting a "bragging" good deal and the dealer makes a decent profit!

I do not see how you can say that ?
Why would ANY Dealer just drop down to 2% under on a pretty much
WANTED vehicle. That does not make any sence .... IMHO ....
They are in the bussiness to MAKE money not give away vehicles
for what they pay for them.
Ya if you go in with the Chry program and the $500 plus $500 rebates
then you are below the 2% under number.

I can say that because a number of dealers will give 2% under invoice with the Chrysler Affiliate Rewards Program, and wave the $75 admin. fee to boot.

Pat@fieldsjeep, a WF member, does just that, for instance. A number of folks on the forum have gotten 2% under invoice with the program from various dealers around the country.

Do a forum search for "Tread Lightly" or "Affiliate Rewards" and learn something.

Two things...
Yes, the prices have started going up on certain options. 3.73's ($95 instead of $50), sidesteps ($445 instead of $395), trailer tow (now $295 instead of $270), and a few others.....with the worst being the price jump for remote start. $200 was a steal, I've seen $395, and I think I've seen $495 as well.


As for Connectivity, there are 3 different price points for the 2012's.
$460 if you are ordering a Sport.
$385 if you are ordering a Sport S, a Sahara (with 130 or 430) or a Rubi (with 130 or 430).
$60 if you are ordering a Sahara or Rubi with the 730.

The $385/$60 option was updated early last year since the 730 already has some of the features that you get with connect.

Next week I'm going to try to order a '13 for 2% under invoice using my affiliate rewards #.

I there any easy way to find the email address for the fleet or internet sales managers at various local dealers? I don't want to waste time with retail sales if I don't have to.

Most of the dealers seem to have a generic contact us link.

Got 14% under sticker for a 2012 JKU Sport Dozer last week, without any incentive (none I was qualified) or trade. They adverised 12% under sticker on web and I only made a little lower offer.
Walked in till signed everything off in 2 hours.

How can they do that? I don't know. It was built Apr 2012, so it hasn't sat there that long.

And in 2009 I got my Miata PRHT for 20% under sticker. I tired to explain that because of bad enconmy, but it's the only dealer did such discount in that area and it's probably the largest dealer. They also posted that on Miata forum where I knew about that.

Do your homework rather than take what people said.

One interesting thing is whichever forum I went to (I was interested in other 2 cars before getting the JKU), I've always heard the car (or truck here) were very wanted, hot selling, hard to find.... but I could still find plenty of stock and discount on web

I guess living in a large city help because there are more competitions and volume sellers

Guess this is the right thread to ask the question, I just negotiated a 2012 jeep wrangler altitude. Sticker price was$ 39,050. My trade in was $ 23,000 for a 08 wrangler excellent condition w 20,000 miles ( sad I know). The jeep was discounted to $ 36,228 w an additional $ 500.00 for the soft top that I don't want bringing the Veh price down to $ 35,728. Bal due is $ 12, 728.00. Anyone thing I did ok or should I negotiate more when the Veh comes in from the other dealer? Thanks

They can sell below invoice because invoice is still over dealer cost. Also the big dealerships can do this more because when they meet certain numbers they get big kickbacks.

Big dealers= numbers game, they just want to sell more cars/jeeps/etc

Smaller= they wont reach those #'s so they try to make more on each sale

As a crude rule of thumb for Jeeps, you should be able to get the price down to about 93% of MSRP, which would be about invoice on Jeeps. For instance, I paid the Chrysler Affiliates price for mine - 1% under invoice +$75 fee - which was 92.8% of MSRP. Keep working on your price, you can do better, especially if you join Tread Lightly and become eligible for the Affiliate Rewards program before you sign the papers on your Jeep.

Someone will always be able to find a better deal...especially on the interwebz. If you are happy with the price AND the dealership....that is all that matters.

Sounds fair. Depends on your location, as some have pointed out, volume selling dealers can probably do better.

And is it a dealer trade? as you said it will come from another dealer.
That might be harder to negotiate as it inovles 2 dealers, or you just go directly to the other dealer that has the wrangler.
And I just think it's not right to re-negotiate the price after they have done the dealer trade.

And $500 for a new OEM soft top is a steal IMO, many of us will like to get that, I do
I'm certain the dealer can get more from that if they resell it to another customer as option

hi, your deal looks good 12,k and change is not bad...i went from a
07jk to a 2012 jk for 10.6 out the door, however your jeep has more options, if u are 1 or 2% lower than invoice your good, u may want to
consider a 2013 as they can be ordered now., as for the the color,
black is sharp when clean! keep us posted and have fun...

I got a pretty good deal on the Jeep I picked up today...but, as my old man pointed out, MY13 is starting...all MY12 are going to take a value hit as soon as they essentially become new-used(old stock) here in the not too distant future. A dealer still asking full value is either confident he can move it or trying to take advantage of the unknowing...

MSRP/sticker price is pretty moot since there are so many institutions that offer some sort of pricing incentive based off invoice. Invoice would be a good place to start as would True Car...who does a nice little break down on average prices - nationally and by region, so you can get a feel for what folks typically pay. As an example, my sticker was 36 something or other I think, but invoice was 34 something I believe...and I was at 31,8 before taxes/fees/tags. There were a few dealers willing to make that kind of deal with me - the trick was finding something that had options like I wanted (not many like manual trans it seems...).

The local guy was only willing to go one percent under invoice or so, no debate, no negotiation, no attempt to compete even after I made it very clear if he didn't come off his price he wasn't getting my business. Sometimes this happens...he is obviously sure he can move the Jeep at that price (and I saw someone test driving it/buying it today when I was at Wendy's). I got mine in Raleigh instead, because they were willing to deal.

I think his is Altitude Edition, isn't it only for 2012?
unless he wants to go for the regular 2013.

All above seems very logical but I live in NJ where there is little logic and less negotiation. I believe I have the sheet w the msrp and invoice on it. The altitude msrp was $ 39,050 and the invoice was I believe $ 34,6 and change. My price, if they can get it from the other dealer is $ 35,400 with $23,000 for my trade ( 08 sahara)

Never use the invoice supplied by the dealer to calculate price. They manipulate invoice with co-op advertising often in hundreds of dollars. The only number the dealer cannot manipulate is the sticker price or msrp on the Monroney label "window sticker". Do your homework and calculate the invoice price from the msrp. Remember they have holdback Of an additional 3% below invoice and this time of year have volume incentives. These incentives are set according to past sales volume for each dealer so the larger dealers do not have an advantage.
