Question on Mileage

So on Friday, we drove the jeep (2012 Rubi, 2 door) from Portland, OR to Natches, WA. On the way there (fully loaded, windows, top up) I got an average of 17 MPG.

On the way back, the closest fuel station only had premium, so I filled it (from almost 1/4) with premium.

I ended up with a 21 MPG average on the way home.

Only difference (route was the same) was the soft top "freedom panel" was open on the way back

Is this really the result of premium fuel!???

Thanks

Scott

More likely a difference in terrain. Slight hill you can't even see will do it. On my way to work (50 miles) ill get 21 and on the way back I get 22.5

No.

Premium will not yield better mpg. Are you calculating by miles driven vs gallons used at the pump or the ECO read on your dash?

Did you reset the readout? It gives a running average so unless you reset it after refueling, your comparison is worthless.

The read on the dash is not accurate and in most instances reading 1-2 mpg better than what your actually getting. The only real way to calculate actual mpg is miles driven vs gallons used. If you haven't reset your ECO read on the dash do so tomorrow by holding down the button (this is the button that scrolls through the different displays on the dash) for 5 secs. Your mpg info on the dash will flash off and then come back on. Now when you drive it will more accurately gauge what your actually getting.

In short, the dash read is never to be used as accurate.

I actually did reset it shortly after I fueled up.
