Question re height with 35" tires and 4" lift...

Guys, I have a 2011 4 door JK Sahara, hard top, which according to Jeep's website, is 72.4" in height. If I want to put 35" tires and a 4" lift, am I adding about 8" to the height of my Jeep (assuming the current stock tire is 31", which I measured)? The reason I need to know is that my parking structure has a clearance of 80", and so if I'm adding 8 inches to the height from stock, I won't make the clearance. Expert advice would be greatly appreciated!

You may actually get more than 4" of lift from whatever spring lift you pick.

The tires while being 4" bigger only add two inches of height. From center, not all 4" are added to one side of the tire.

So your looking at 6" of lift if your tires are a true 4" bigger and the lift is a true 4".

And the tires almost surely won't be a true 4" bigger. For example, your stock Sahara tire is in fact a 32" tire.

Careful with a 4" lift by the way. A lot has to change to make that safe and work in the long term. If you know all that, cool, and make sure you post pics. If you don't . . . hang around for a little while and do some reading.

Just remember you could lose some of your drive train warranty with this lift also and if one dealer flags your jeep then it effect future warranty issues too. Just a thought especially since it is a 2011.

I just had a 285/70 put on mine which is 32.71" but after the weight of the vehicle compresses the tire is is actually 32.1 and that is taken away from the ground clearance side. Also the 4" lift does nothing for the ground clearance and helps none in off roading itself. All the lift does is allow room for bigger tires. And really going from a stock 32" to a 35" only adds 1 1/2" to ground clearance in the long run. So basically all it does effect is looks. Of course if that is what you want to go for it. It does look good. But remember this will cost a lot to do it right and you have to do it right for that size lift. It involves a lot of suspension mods and regearing to take away the strain the 35" tires will cause. It will also cost you big time at the pump if this is a daily driver. My 285's cost me 2 mpg's and they aren't true 33's just close.

Think about a tuner too like AEV Procal or Superchips Flashpaq. You will need to change several of you settings to get your speedo right and the dealer won't change it for you on this type of mod in most cases.

No offense, but you're wrong about clearance. The lift raises the entire frame higher, which raises everything attached to the frame. Also allows for more flex. Having a 4" lift is a substantial improvement in a lot of off roading situations.

Unless you're referring to the axles?

And even if the tires were truly 4" larger, that only raises you 2"...... two inches below the hub, two above. The two above aren't doing anything to make it taller.

It might raise frame clearance but it doesn't raise clearance itself. Your axles and other suspension parts will be the same height. Agree that it allows more flex though but not a whole lot.

Reality check, evidentally this JK is your DD, so-

If you install a 4" lift ($800/1899 bucks) and a set of 35" tires/wheels ($1800 bucks) then you're gonna need new drive shafts. probably axles, new shocks and NO warranty, for most of your drivetrain-

Say I'm faced with an obstacle that has a fairly large log. I bring my front tires over the log. I have to move forward to get my back tires on the log. While I'm moving forward, where is the log? Right under my frame......

Most would have to admit that the bigger tires are for looks mostly but after that 1.5-2 inches of lift from tires is better than nothing and over certain obstacles will be the difference between scraping or not. Those 1.5-2 not only adds that lift to the whole rig but adds it to the most important spot, the lowest hanging thing on the jeep, your diffs.

The 4" spring lift will let you stuff bigger tires but it also gives you 4 inches of extra clearance everywhere but the axles. I know 1/2" can be the difference between scraping so 4" is huge off road. Anyone who says a 4" lift won't help you off road is surely wrong.

In my original reply I directly answered your question but now it's time for me to jump on the bandwagon. Doing what you want is going to cost a fortune to do right. The 4" of height is easy and relatively cheap. Making that work properly is another thing and rather spendy. You need control arms and new drivelines to go that high and be right. Figure on tacking on 2k extra just to sort the lift out. That does not even cover gears or tuning for the increased tire size.

I wish you luck. It's only money so if you have it, do whatever you want. Otherwise be very careful how you proceed.

Every inch that you lift your jeep raises your center of gravity which reduces stability as well as negatively impacting your handling. A 4" lift will help you clear obstacles, but may not help overall performance.

You have to clear a very specific obstacle, and a 4" lift my just be the ticket for you. But as with everything it comes with trade offs, and there is no one answer.

And I would rather go up rollover hill in my 3" lift than a 4" lift. So much is dependent on the terrain you encounter.

Another point I forgot to touch on. I was speaking in regards to clearance. For 90 percent of off roading any lift is going to help greatly.

Like you point out the COG will also change drastically. That can be an issue in really steep terrain so you have to be aware of that. Either way you cut it you stand a much better chance of ending up on YouTube when you lift and add 35's for good and bad reasons.

Your axles are still at the same height wether it's stock or lifted.

Bigger tires is the only way to raise your alxes.

Hate to say it but in most cases aftermarket "lift" springs are thicker than the stock springs and actully flex less and have a stiff ride.

For the best downward travel or flex your just as well off with spring spacers and soft stock springs, longer shocks and extended brake lines than a super expensive kit.

If your taking about a 4 link setup and going extreme yeah long springs and shocks required. For DD and weekend wheeling plenty of articulation can be had for very little.

Cut fenders and tube fenders are often overlooked as ways to impove off road capability.

I have the same setup, with no issues pulling in my garage. A standard garage opening is seven feet (84") and there's still around five- six inches to spare. Don't listen to all the lift haters out there. I bought a 4" lift (coil springs, shocks, brackets, track bar) and tires and wheels 35's. No driveshafts needed yet, but I don't do a lot of offroading. No problems.
